Winter is a challenging time for fruit trees. To ensure they survive it successfully, they need timely preparation. They'll reward you with health, increased frost resistance, and a bountiful harvest next year. Today, we'll share five of the most important tips.
Treatment against diseases and pests

In September, the harvest of late autumn and winter apple and pear varieties continues. As soon as it is finished, the fruit trees need to be treated.
- spray the leaves with chemicals before the leaves fall;
- or wait until the leaves fall, prune, clear the trunks of moss and lichen, and then process.
The first method is more suitable for a young garden, the second - for mature fruit-bearing trees.

| Preparation | Concentration % | Concentration % |
| For healthy garden | For sick trees | |
| Iron copper sulfate | 2-3 | 4-5 |
| Copper copper sulfate | 2 | 3 |
| Bordeaux mixture | 1 | 3 |

| Urea | 3 | 5-7 |
| «Horus» | By instructions | By instructions |
| «Skor» | By instructions, effective at temperature higher +16 | By instructions |
Karbofos and Zubr are used as insecticides. A urea solution is also suitable.
Note: You can prepare a tank mix of fungicide and insecticide, taking into account their compatibility, and carry out only one treatment.
Spraying should be done in dry, windless weather. It's best if there's no rain the following day. Adding an adhesive to the solution will improve the effectiveness of the treatment.
Trimming
This is done only during the deep dormancy period after leaf fall. In the fall, large, old branches are removed, thinning the crown. It's best to leave pruning young shoots until spring, when it's clear how they survived the winter.
Important: pruning should be carried out at positive temperatures, and all damaged areas should be covered with garden pitch.
Sanitation and fertilization
The garden, like the house, needs cleaning:
- the trunks of old trees are cleared of moss and lichen;
- remove plant debris from the entire area around the tree trunk, including fallen leaves and weeds;
- the harvested material is burned.
At the same time, dry phosphorus-potassium fertilizers are applied, incorporating them into the soil by loosening the soil. The garden requires moisture-replenishing irrigation, especially during dry autumns.
Important: do not apply nitrogen fertilizers in the fall, as this will stimulate the growth of young shoots that will not survive the winter and weaken the plants.
Whitewash

Autumn whitewashing is an excellent way to protect bark from frost. It's done after the tree trunks have been cleaned. Whitewashing compounds based on chalk, lime, and water-based paint are used.
Note: fungicide is added to the whitewash.
Protection from frost and rodents
First of all, protect the root system with organic mulch in a layer of at least 10 cm. All heat-loving plants are covered, preferably with a dry air method.
Important: even frost-resistant crops need insulation for the first 1-2 years after transplantation.
To prevent rodents from disturbing the roots, rags soaked in a strong-smelling liquid are placed under the crown:
- machine oil;
- diesel fuel;
- birch tar.
The trunks of young trees are protected with plastic nets.
