Conifers are considered noble plants; they exude a healthy aroma. They also enrich the atmosphere with antibacterial elements. They remain attractive year-round. Any of them will look perfect in any area, especially parks and spacious gardens. When choosing, consider the plant's size, spreading habit, and other criteria.

Advantages and disadvantages

All conifers, except larch, are evergreen. Their needles are renewed gradually; once every few years, they begin to fall, and new needles grow in their place. These plants can be used in landscaping, and the plant itself:

  • hardy;
  • frost-resistant;
  • attractive;
  • undemanding to care.

Among the advantages:

  1. Excellent tolerance to light deficiency.
  2. Many varieties have clear geometry and do not require regular pruning.
  3. The root system is well developed, allowing it to tolerate drought. Some varieties are suitable for rocky soil.

To ensure the chosen tree meets all criteria, it must be selected according to certain rules. Plants are divided into three categories based on the dimensions of their underground and aboveground parts:

  • tall - taxodium, fir and ginkgo, the height of which reaches about 7 m;
  • medium-sized 3-6 meters in height: spruce, yew, cypress;
  • low-growing, which grow up to 1 meter and are blue spruce, western thuja and pine.

Additional criteria:

  1. Type of care.
  2. Plot size. If the area is no more than 600 square meters, then either one large plant or two or three small ones are acceptable.
  3. Place of cultivation.
  4. Climate conditions.
  5. On your own. These trees require special care.

Types of conifers for the garden

You need to determine the level of decorative value and purpose for yourself. Some conifers can be used to: zone space on a site, stabilize soil that has slipped, or provide a screen from intrusive plants.

Thuja Smaragd The plant reaches a height of 5 meters and a diameter of 1-1.5 meters. It has a conical crown with vertical branches and is considered a slow-growing tree. Regular watering and preventing the soil from drying out are sufficient for cultivation. It is best to choose a site with moderate sunlight.

Juniper Skyrocket – also known as the pencil tree, it grows up to 6-8 meters tall and up to 1 meter wide. The crown is columnar and tapering. The branches grow vertically, and the needles are a gray-blue hue. The variety can be needle-like or scaly. Plantings are best in open, sunny locations.

Pinus Compacta Glauca – an excellent option for creating a unique landscape design. Its main characteristics are:

  • height no more than 3 m;
  • width up to more than 1.5 m;
  • The needles are bluish-green with 8-9 cm long needles.

The branches point upward. The plant is ideal for creating artificial rock gardens.

Korean fir – a slow-growing plant that can reach a height of 12 m. Distinguishing characteristics include soft, densely spaced needles 2 cm long. The cones are vertical, and their color is purple-violet, gradually turning dark brown.

Thuja Danica – the most common variety of spherical shaped needles.

At 10 years of age, the diameter will be only 4 cm, and the maximum size in height is 0.8 m and in diameter 1 m.

Distinguishing features:

  • shiny needles;
  • rich dark green color;
  • The needles are flat and scaly in shape and are arranged vertically.

The root system is superficial, but there are several deep roots.

To ensure conifers live up to expectations and fully reveal their properties, planting and care are carried out in accordance with certain rules:

  1. The location should be protected from cold wind and bright sun.
  2. Purchases should be made from specialized nurseries where young bushes have undergone initial adaptation.
  3. When planting, leave the root collar of coniferous plants a few cm higher than the ground level.
  4. Planting should be done in the spring so that rooting occurs before the cold weather sets in.
  5. Good drainage must be ensured.
  6. The distance from tree to tree is at least 1.5 meters.
  7. Young bushes require abundant watering.

With the onset of winter, cover the root system with spruce branches, and if the climate is too harsh, then additional protection from wind and snow is necessary.
