Peppers in Russia are primarily grown from seedlings, which gives them a better chance of adapting to the climate. Planting outdoors is only suitable for warmer regions, but starting them indoors can significantly reduce losses and yield earlier, even in cooler seasons. Choosing the right day (according to the 2024 lunar calendar) can influence the growth rate, quantity, and quality of the harvest.
Lunar calendar
The entire year can be broken down into phases of the moon, which it passes through every few weeks. The waxing moon is best for planting peppers: it brings a surge of energy and promotes renewal and rapid growth. The waning moon is preferable for root vegetables. During the new and full moons, it's best to leave the plants alone to avoid harm. It's also best to avoid watering and actively feeding them during these periods, as this can be detrimental to the seedlings.
The zodiac sign the moon is in on a given day also influences the harvest. Some lunar cycles are more suitable for harvesting than others. Seedlings planted on a favorable day will be significantly stronger and more resilient than those planted on an unfavorable lunar date. Before beginning this practice, it's worth checking not only the climate in your region and the phases of the moon, but also the zodiac signs it passes through:
- The most successful: Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn, Pisces.
- neutral: Aries, Virgo, Sagittarius, Taurus.
- Unlucky: Libra, Leo, Aquarius, Gemini.
Deadlines in 2024
The exact dates will vary depending on warmer and cooler regions, but for greenhouse cultivation, it's always best to prepare seedlings a little earlier. It's easier to create a suitable microclimate indoors, where peppers are protected from drafts and precipitation. In heated greenhouses, seedlings can be planted even earlier. On average, plants are transplanted outdoors 2-3 weeks later. The rest depends on the region:
- South of the country: from April to early May;
- Middle zone: from the end of April to the beginning of June;
- Urals, North, Siberia, Far East: from May to mid-June.
On average, it takes two months for seedlings to germinate and grow strong, so subtract 60 days from the recommended dates to arrive at the optimal time for planting seeds. For greenhouse sowing, early dates should be considered, while for open-ground sowing, late dates should be considered. This means seedling preparation should begin between February and early April. Suitable dates in 2024 for our work:
- February: 11, 12, 19-21;
- March: 11, 17-19;
- April: 13-16.
February
Planting seeds in winter is suitable for warmer regions and for preparing seedlings for heated greenhouses. Be sure to calibrate them beforehand: discard dried and old ones to save energy. To do this, submerge them in salted water. Empty seeds will float, while those suitable for sowing will sink to the bottom. There aren't many favorable days throughout the month, but they are divided into those near the beginning and end, which is good news.

February 11 and 12
The waxing moon in Pisces is a fertile sign, increasing the chances of sprouting and a good harvest in the future. Seeds planted during this period will grow vigorously and vigorously. soak the seed material, loosen the soil, add fertilizer, and water the plants. These days in February are perfect for any work with seedlings.
February 19-21
The waxing moon is in Cancer. Sow your seeds boldly! Plants are guaranteed to develop well: shoots will emerge quite early, within a week on average. Seedlings will also thrive. This has been proven for centuries. These days are also a good time to focus on other tasks, including germination and watering.
March
In the first month of spring there are slightly fewer favorable days. Better prepare seed material, germinating it. To do this, soak it in water, then place it in gauze or cotton wool, leaving it in a warm place for a couple of days. The temperature should be above room temperature to allow the sprout to emerge. Plant the seeds directly into the soil on the appropriate days.

March 11
The waxing moon is in Pisces. Seeds planted today will sprout into medium-sized bushes with dense stems and abundant fruit. Leaves are actively developing, and seedlings will appear in seven days. If (there's a risk) the bushes are weak and begin to droop, they can be tied up. It's best to do this before the harvest, to prevent them from bending under the weight of the peppers.
March 17-19
The waxing moon in Cancer promotes uniform germination and abundant growth. Peppers can be planted during this period, both in open ground and in an unheated greenhouse. You can apply mineral fertilizers, water, and till the soil. However, transplanting seedlings is definitely not recommended on this day.
The roots are strong, but their ability to establish themselves in new soil is limited. So it's best to wait.
April
To ensure peppers sprout before the season begins, you can sow seeds for seedlings in the first half of April. This will allow the plants to properly establish themselves before it's time to transplant them to a new location. The first sprouts usually appear within one to two weeks. Before transplanting, it's best to keep the container with the planted seeds in a dark, warm place, covered with plastic wrap.
| Date | Recommendations |
| 13-16 | Good days for planting seeds |
| 9-23 | Germination |
| 1-7, 9-23, 25-30 | Watering |
| 8, 24 | Bad days |
April 13-16
The waxing moon in Cancer is a favorable time for planting seeds; the harvest will be abundant. If you're growing vegetables for sale or to store, these days are ideal. The fruits will be juicy, but without abundant seed material, you won't be able to replant the same varieties.
That's all for now. However, if you can't make it on these dates, you can also do it from April 9th to 11th, or from the 18th to the 21st. Although the signs are not as fertile, they are more neutral, and the moon is waxing, so everything will still work out, especially if you pay more attention to the process itself.
Wishing you friendly shoots and a rich harvest!
