Golubizna Potato: Variety Characteristics, Reviews (Photos)

Potato

Breeders have always strived to achieve maximum yield, but they also prioritize flavor. The Golubizna variety is a perfect example of successful professional work following this principle.

Those who decide to plant the Golubizna potato should first study the variety's description, look at photos and reviews available online. The Golubizna tuber contains many essential micronutrients and boasts an unforgettable flavor.

Description and characteristics of the Golubizna potato

The Golubizna potato has medium-sized, low-spreading plants. However, the tops are voluminous. The leaves quickly acquire a rich green color and retain it for a long time. The plant produces neat purple flowers.

Main characteristics of the variety:

  1. The Golubizna potato is known for its distinctive fruit; variety characteristics and reviews indicate the elongated shape of the tubers and the distinctive mesh-like pattern visible on the skin.
  2. One tuber weighs on average 150 grams.
  3. The tubers have few eyes, all of them are superficial and barely noticeable.
  4. The tubers have white flesh that retains its color when cooked. The fruits have a distinctive aroma and a slightly sweet flavor. They are used for table purposes due to their crisp texture. The variety is ideal for frying and mashing.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

When reviewing the Golubizna variety, it's essential to describe its main positive and negative qualities and properties. Overall, many advantages can be highlighted.

  • Breeders have created a variety that is highly resistant to late blight, which is common in potatoes.
  • A remarkable feature of this variety is its excellent resistance to periods of drought. This allows gardeners to reap a good harvest even when weather conditions are less than ideal. Many farmers choose Golubizna for its high yield.
  • Proper planting and care result in yields of up to 2,000 kg per 100 square meters. Adverse effects such as cold weather do not harm the variety, and growing in areas with high groundwater levels will not negatively affect Golubizna.
The Golubizna potato variety has minimal drawbacks, which are generally limited to problems caused by improper care. A negative trait is the frequent hollowing of the tubers.

Growing rules

  1. The Golubizna potato variety is planted in the first half of May. April should be characterized by pleasantly warm weather.
  2. The soil must warm up to at least 6 degrees.
  3. The bushes will form uniformly and bloom simultaneously if planted in a timely manner. Gardeners who don't follow the recommended schedule may not see their potatoes ripen or end up with tubers that don't store well.
  4. Potatoes planted at the wrong time will have high nitrate levels and low starch content. Select medium-sized potatoes for planting; larger ones are cut open and examined for sprouts.

The Golubizna potato variety has a unique planting method. Gardeners can choose their own planting method:

  • comb;
  • private.
Advice! The latter is recommended if Golubizna is grown in humid conditions. The former is suitable for areas frequently experiencing drought.

When planting potatoes, it's important to maintain a distance of 70 cm between each row. In some cases, an exception can be made and the distance increased by 20 cm. There should be 30 cm of space between each hole. The gardener adjusts the hole depth based on factors such as climate conditions, planting method, and preliminary tuber preparation.

Care instructions

The Golubizna potato variety can produce a good harvest, as evidenced by photos and descriptions from people who have been growing this variety for a long time.

  1. Experienced gardeners claim that the best quality of the harvest can be achieved by fertilizing at least three times.
  2. Water the plant moderately, monitoring the tops' response to a specific amount of water. They shouldn't be overly active. Otherwise, the tubers won't have enough nutrients to develop and ripen on time.
  3. The root system of Golubizna responds well to feeding with bird droppings and mullein.
  4. Herbal infusions and mineral fertilizers are traditionally applied in July. Plant fertilizers containing phosphorus and humates are used when necessary, especially when the plant responds poorly to other fertilizers.
Advice! A good alternative can be a nettle infusion mixed with mullein.

Pest and disease control

The Golubizna potato variety is renowned for its resistance to various diseases, as confirmed by its characteristics listed in the state register. Potato cancer, a pest of the crop, is also not a threat to Golubizna. It is highly resistant to scab and rot. Golubizna rarely encounters virus type Y and rhizoctonia. With proper care, potato mosaic virus can be avoided. Late blight and rot can only occur in excessively humid growing conditions.

Fortunately, this disease can be cured with gentle preparations diluted in water for subsequent irrigation of each bush.

Cleaning and storage

The tops should be removed beforehand, 14 days before the planned tubers are harvested. Many gardeners dig up the Golubizna tubers by the end of August. In some cases, digging occurs in early September. The tubers can be stored indoors, free from dampness and mold. The space should be well-ventilated and maintained at a temperature of at least 2°C (3°F). The ideal temperature is considered to be 4°C (39°F). Over the winter, the variety perfectly retains the flavor that has earned it its fame.

Before planting, potatoes are left in the open air for two hours; it is advisable to leave selected, undamaged tubers for the winter.

Reviews

Victoria:

"I couldn't be happier with Golubizna. The first time I dug up a nest, I found up to 20 fruits. This year, the number has increased dramatically. The main thing is to learn to fertilize the plant on time and recognize what it needs most at a given time. For feeding, I use a proven fertilizer. I recommend Golubizna to everyone as an ideal variety for both table and commercial use."

Michael:

I was looking for a variety that would thrive in drought conditions. Before growing Golubizna, I tried many different varieties. None of them compare to Golubizna's yield. It's hard to find a better variety for areas with low rainfall.

Sergey:

"Late blight was constantly ruining Golubizna, even though the description said this disease is rare for the variety. Apparently, I was making mistakes in my care. As soon as I changed the care regimen, I started loosening the soil and fertilizing the plant on time, and there was no sign of late blight."

Natalia:

"The yield is truly impressive. By the end of August, my family and I had dug up so many tubers that we were considering expanding our storage space. We were happy to share the potatoes with our family; there were still plenty left."

Regina:

"Achieving a consistently high yield was much easier than I imagined. Constant droughts are common for us, but the variety thrives in such conditions without compromising the quality of the tubers. The fruits are incredibly tasty and have a pleasant aroma."
