Description and characteristics of the Krasavchik potato

The Krasavchik potato is widely popular in Russia, as well as Moldova and Ukraine. It tolerates drought well and has high resistance to diseases and pests. This variety was developed by Russian breeders.

The soft, reddish skin with shallow eyes is easy to peel when needed, and the inside has a pleasant flavor, so the tubers are often used as food. Krasavchik Potato: shoots, yield

This variety grows medium-sized, semi-erect bushes. Its growth habit is characterized as intermediate. The leaves are medium-sized, with anthocyanin tint on the underside of the corolla.

Krasavchik is a mid-early variety, reaching full maturity in up to three months. It boasts high yields, yielding up to 200 centners per hectare. The tubers grow quite large, with a reddish skin. A typical potato weighs between 90 and 150 grams.

The starch content ranges from 10-18%. The interior of the tuber has a creamy color. Krasavchik (beautiful) potatoes are often used in various dishes. Many cooks prefer this variety because the tuber doesn't become mushy when cooked.

Advantages and disadvantages

This variety has many advantages. Krasavchik has a wide growing range, making it suitable for planting in a variety of soils. Its shelf life reaches 97%, and its marketability reaches 98%.

This type of root vegetable is often chosen by housewives due to its taste and resistance to heat treatment.

This potato has high resistance to many diseases, such as cancer and potato mosaic.

The only drawback of this variety's root crop is susceptibility to golden cyst nematode. The tops also have moderate resistance to late blight.

Landing rules

Krasavchik can be planted in a plot previously occupied by winter crops, flax, and perennial and annual grasses. Replanting this variety in the same plot should be done only after 3-4 years.

In order for the plant to produce a good harvest, it is necessary to follow certain planting rules:

  1. Choosing the right planting location is important. The root crop is a sun-loving plant, so the space should be open. To ensure even light reaches all beds throughout the day, it's best to orient the rows north to south.
  2. The soil should be between 5 and 5.5 pH. If necessary, limestone is added.
  3. Autumn digging for future garden beds is extremely important. The soil should be dug to a depth of 20 to 30 cm, turning over layers of soil. Fertilize the soil at this time. 300 kg of high-quality manure is required per 100 square meters of plot.
  4. To get a high-quality harvest, it's important to choose the right planting material. The tubers should be healthy, free of any plaque, and have a sufficient number of eyes. Before planting, the tubers should germinate in a well-lit area.
  5. You can stimulate or increase the number of future sprouts by making a deep cut across the tuber.

The distance between rows should be 70 to 80 cm, and between holes – 30 to 40 cm. This planting pattern will allow the roots to develop freely and the tubers will not interfere with each other.

Care instructions

Proper care of planted tubers will help you grow a large and delicious harvest. For the Krasavchik variety, it's crucial to carry out all necessary procedures throughout the growing season, such as:

  • removing weeds from garden beds;
  • timely application of fertilizers;
  • hilling;
  • loosening;
  • watering as needed, depending on weather conditions.

It is this type of care that promotes the successful growth of tubers in garden plots.

The issue of soil fertilization and root feeding must be considered separately, as this is very important for this potato variety:

  1. After planting, apply a single fertilizer of bird droppings and mullein infusion. Potato sprouts can also be added. This will help protect the bush from pests. Each plant requires no more than 2 liters of the prepared solution.
  2. During planting, you can apply high-quality manure under each bush. This will significantly increase future yields. Additional fertilizers can also be applied after planting the root crops.
  3. Foliar feeding is necessary during the final stages of flowering. Phosphorus-based fertilizers are best for this purpose.
  4. You can also add nitrogen-containing fertilizers, but only together with potassium ones.

Farmers recommend stopping the use of wood ash as a fertilizer.

Diseases and pests

The Krasavchik potato variety is susceptible to damage by cyst-forming nematodes.

The disease can be identified visually:

  • in the beds, plants are starting to wither in certain areas;
  • the tops begin to dry out and the leaves curl up;
  • the stem may become curved;
  • There is weak flowering and the tubers are small in size;
  • the roots acquire a brown tint.

Nematodes can be controlled using specialized products. One of the most effective against this pest is "Thiazon." It is important to follow the instructions for using it, as it is highly toxic. "Thiazon" should be applied no later than one month before the planned planting.

You can also periodically add mullein, bird droppings, or potato sprout infusion to the soil – they will also help combat nematode infestations.

Reviews

Gardeners' reviews of the Krasavchik potato variety's characteristics and yields are extremely positive. Below are just a few of them.

Anna:

"I grew this variety during the drought of 2014. Compared to other potato varieties, Krasavchik yielded the highest yield. I was also pleased that there wasn't a single rotten tuber."

Sergey:

"I once chose Krasavchik for planting at my dacha. I liked this variety; the potatoes were large, and the harvest was plentiful. The only disappointing thing was nematodes on some of the tubers. Otherwise, the whole family enjoyed eating the potatoes. Now we try to use the Krasavchik variety for planting."

Konstantin:

"I chose this variety because of its name, and it lived up to it. 'Krasavchik' produced many large, beautiful potatoes that were exceptionally healthy. Even after boiling, the potatoes remained in shape: they didn't fall apart and had a pleasant color and flavor. Overall, this variety is a 'Krasavchik' by all accounts."
