The Manifest potato is the result of the work of Belarusian breeders. It is most widely grown in the fields and gardens of Belarus, but is also popular with potato growers in Ukraine, Moldova, Lithuania, Kazakhstan, and the central regions of Russia.
This variety is considered mid-late in terms of ripening time. It is characterized by high yield and resistance to major potato diseases and damage.
Main characteristics:
- The average weight of a potato is 100–135 g.
- Starch content – 13-15%.
- Drought resistance is good.
- Marketability – 80 – 97%.
- Keeping quality – 94%.
- Consumer purpose – universal.
- Consumer qualities: does not darken when cooked, boils down to medium temperature (type AB), good taste.
- Ripening period: 90-110 days.
Crop yield indicators
This variety is characterized by high yields. Recorded yields range from 165 to 460 centners per hectare. Typically, 11-15 potatoes are produced per bush.
Morphological features
The Manifest intermediate potato bushes are semi-erect and reach a height of 50 cm. The medium-sized, emerald-colored leaves have slightly wavy edges and are completely open and glossy.
The tubers are pink, oblong, and round, with small yellow eyes. The flesh has a yellowish tint.
Growing rules
- Soil. The Manifest potato variety prefers light, well-drained soils. Good yields have been observed on chernozem, chestnut, and calcareous soils. The soil should be well loosened before planting.
- Timing. The optimal planting time is the first ten days of May. In southern regions, planting can begin earlier, but the main rule is that the soil should be at least 8°C at a depth of 10 cm. Planting in cold soil leads to potato sprout disease, which significantly reduces the number of ovaries. Planting a couple of weeks late also leads to a 7-10% reduction in yield.
- Planting guidelines. It's important to spread the seeds evenly across the pit or furrow, maintaining a consistent depth. What's the benefit? A consistent planting depth allows the seedlings to emerge evenly above the surface, making it easier to tend to and ensure the harvest ripens simultaneously. A minimum distance of 50 cm between plants ensures equal access to light from all directions.
- Fertilizers. The Manifest variety responds well to fertilizers; the more the better. Increased yields have been noted with increased amounts of organic and mineral fertilizers.
Care instructions
The rules for caring for Manifest potato variety plantings are no different from the basic rules for caring for this crop:
- weeding and removal of weeds is carried out manually or with the help of herbicides;
- after the tops reach a height of about 15 cm, the bushes are hilled up, which is repeated twice with an interval of two weeks;
- Cultivation, hilling and weeding must be completed before the tops of the bushes close their crown;
- During growth, additional feeding with urea, chicken manure dissolved in water, or scattering of mineral fertilizers is possible;
- During prolonged droughts, supplemental watering is recommended. This isn't necessary frequently; potatoes respond well to infrequent but abundant watering. Potatoes especially need moisture during shoot growth and tuber formation.
Harvesting and storage
Harvesting on time is just as important as planting on time. Potato tubers left in the ground for too long will become overheated and wilt. Such a harvest does not store well and will begin to sprout prematurely. The optimal time to harvest potatoes is considered to be after most of the leaves have dried. About two weeks before the scheduled harvest, the tops are mown down and the crop is allowed to rest until the crust hardens.
In soft, crumbly soil, tubers can be dug up using a pitchfork.
When harvested at the right time, Manifest potatoes exhibit excellent shelf life in cool, humid conditions. The optimal temperature for winter storage is considered to be 3-5°C.
Diseases and pests
This potato variety is resistant to diseases such as golden nematode and rugose mosaic, and moderately resistant to late blight. Potato pests include Colorado potato beetles, mole crickets, and potato moths.
The insect tolerates cold winters well and reproduces rapidly. Signs of infestation include curled leaves and webbing between them. Spraying with products such as Leptocide before flower set can save the crop. Penetration of the tubers can be prevented by hilling the bushes high.
Reviews
The Manifest potato variety is a favorite among gardeners. Those who have tried it in their own plots have praised its high yields, simple farming techniques, and excellent taste. Those who have grown it for sale appreciated its ability to maintain its appearance during transport and its excellent shelf life. No negative reviews have been recorded.
