Description and characteristics of the Slavyanka potato

The variety was developed by Ukrainian breeders and is considered the most popular in Ukraine.

The bushes are spreading and well-branched. The leaves are green and large. When flowering, delicate purple inflorescences appear.

This variety is late-ripening. Harvesting begins 120 days after planting. The average yield is 250 centners per hectare.

Please note: If cultivation technology is followed, the yield can reach 400 c/ha.

The potato is weather-resistant and can be stored for a long time without affecting its flavor. The variety is resistant to many diseases.

The tubers are quite large, oval-shaped, and pink in color. Each one weighs 90-175 grams. They are rich in vitamins, amino acids, and protein.

The tubers have a marketable appearance. This variety is ideal not only for home growing but also for retail. The potatoes are lightly cooked and suitable for a variety of dishes. In addition to standard potato delicacies, they can easily be made into French fries and chips.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

The Slavyanka potato has many advantages. The most important ones are the following:

  • good taste;
  • high yield;
  • early ripening period;
  • the fruits have a marketable appearance and a neat shape;
  • the harvest can be stored during the winter period;
  • the variety is undemanding to temperature changes;
  • resistance to many diseases.

The main disadvantages include the following:

  • The variety is susceptible to mechanical damage. Tubers damaged during harvest cannot be stored;
  • tubers can be affected by late blight.

Rules for growing Slavyanka potatoes

Before starting planting work, it is necessary to carry out preparatory measures.

Before planting, the tubers need to be soaked in a solution of potassium permanganate and then dried.

To get a good harvest, it is important to plant the crop in small beds.

When growing potatoes in a small area, experts recommend using the following planting method:

  • dig a trench 25 cm high and 35 cm wide;
  • lay out the remains of leaves, grass, stems;
  • add compost or other fertilizers;
  • place the tubers on top and cover them with soil;
  • Dig a trench nearby; it will be used later for hilling up plants.

Care instructions

Caring for the Slavyanka potato variety is easy. It's low-maintenance, and typically presents no difficulties. Caring for this crop involves the following steps:

  1. Weeding. Potatoes don't like weeds, so weeds should be removed as they appear.
  2. Loosening the soil is an important procedure. It removes the crust from the soil, allowing air to reach the root system.
  3. Plant disease treatment. You can protect crops from late blight and macrosporiosis using chemicals.
  4. Watering. The first watering should be done during the flowering period. Subsequent waterings should be repeated every week. Please note that this variety can tolerate drought. However, the tubers will be small, and the yield will be significantly reduced.
  5. Fertilizing. Fertilizing is required twice throughout the season. The first application is necessary when the plants reach a height of 15 cm. Repeat the application after a few weeks.

Diseases and pests

The Slavyanka variety is resistant to diseases such as potato cancer, nematodes, and scab. Various viruses rarely threaten crops. Copper-containing products are recommended for plant treatment.

You can protect crops from rot and fungal diseases using a drug such as Fitosporin.

As for pests, the most dangerous are the Colorado potato beetle and thrips. In case of widespread infestation, the bushes should be treated with insecticides. Furthermore, the tops should be removed and burned.

Wireworms are also found in potato beds. You can protect your plants from the pest by treating the tubers and soil before planting.

"I recommend the Slavyanka variety to all gardeners. The yield is excellent; we harvest up to 3 tons of tubers from 15 acres. However, such a result can only be achieved by incorporating manure into the soil.

Another thing I'd like to point out is that potatoes store well. We store them in the cellar and enjoy the amazing taste of fresh vegetables all winter long. The dishes turn out excellent, and the whole family loves them."

The Slavyanka variety has proven itself to be an excellent choice. It is grown in private plots, on farms, and for industrial production. With proper cultivation techniques, a good harvest can be achieved.
