Potato Sorokadnevka: description and characteristics of the variety, when to dig, reviews

Potato

The Sorokodnevka potato is an ultra-early variety with a 40-day growing season. Well-formed, ripe tubers can be harvested 40 days after planting. However, it's important to keep in mind the specific characteristics of the crop: the flavor of young potatoes will be pleasant, but not as rich as that of a late-ripening variety.

Sorokodnevka is a variety that boasts good resistance to unstable weather and various diseases. Its yield is extremely high, and using additional methods to increase yields can achieve amazing results.

Description and characteristics of the Sorokodnevka potato

  1. The tubers of these varieties are medium-sized. The minimum average weight is 80 grams, and the maximum is 120 grams.
  2. The tubers are oval in shape, but may be more rounded.
  3. The peel is light and uniform in color. It feels rough to the touch. The peel can also be pink or yellow, depending on the variety.
  4. The pulp has a characteristic creamy hue.
  5. The starch content of a single tuber is modest. On average, the starch content of Sorokodnevka potatoes is 14%.
  6. Varieties belonging to this group are famous for their high content of protein and amino acids, which, along with beta-carotene, play an important role in human health.

The term "Sorokodnevka" encompasses many folk-bred varieties that failed to make it into the official State Register. The Sorokodnevka potato, along with a detailed description of its variety, a number of characteristics, photos from gardeners, and reviews from farmers, provide a complete picture and a better understanding of the crop. It is most often used by small farmers or owners of small garden plots. Growing this variety commercially is unprofitable.

According to the variety description and many photos, the Sorokodnevka potato grows as small bushes. They often grow spreading with dark green leaves. A characteristic feature of the leaf is the wavy edge. The corolla is formed by white flowers that quickly fall off.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Gardeners who are unable to grow many varieties due to the region's unstable climate can easily grow any ultra-early variety, as these potatoes produce excellent results in temperature fluctuations and in poor soils.

If the region's climate is warm, you can grow Sorokodnevka potatoes several times a year. Some gardeners manage to plant them and reap a decent harvest three times. Soil composition will primarily determine the yield, but on average, one hectare can yield 300 centners of tubers.

Important! It's difficult to call Sorokodnevka a stable variety. Tubers of a single variety can vary, from large to small, making them unsuitable for planting. However, deformed tubers are rare.

Growing rules

Sorokodnevka can be safely planted when the soil temperature is at least 100°C (212°F). Gardeners in southern regions can begin planting by the end of March, but the optimal time is May. The soil must be loosened and fertilized beforehand. Gardeners have reported that replanting within a year produces healthy, large tubers. Seeding and treatment with biostimulants is highly recommended.

Care instructions

This variety doesn't require any special care. It doesn't require frequent watering; meltwater provides the necessary moisture. A watering schedule should be developed after replanting the year before. The variety's characteristics should be taken into account. Seedlings should be protected from possible frost by covering them with plastic at night. Ultra-early varieties don't require additional feeding; one application into the hole before planting is sufficient.

Varieties of Sorokodnevka

The Sorokodnevka potato variety is represented by the following species.

  1. Timo copes well with low temperatures and produces high-quality fruits without the need for additional measures to stimulate yield.
  2. Karatop – despite its small tuber size, this variety has become popular. It's a prominent example of German selection, distinguished by its high yield.
  3. Meteor is a variety that easily tolerates long periods of drought and rarely suffers from late blight. It has become popular among Russian farmers due to its unique flavor, excellent marketability, and excellent shelf life. This is despite the fact that many ultra-early varieties are recommended not to be stored and should be consumed shortly after harvest.
  4. Impala is a popular variety among gardeners in the southern regions, allowing for an excellent harvest twice a year.
  5. Scarlett is an early-ripening potato from the forty-day group. It tolerates transportation well thanks to its relatively thick skin. It is renowned for its long shelf life.
  6. The Kholmogorsky variety is ideal for table use, with its excellent flavor and subtle aroma. This hybrid retains its best qualities for a long time under ideal storage conditions.
  7. The new variety is considered to be an ultra-early, strong one, which is distinguished by its excellent marketability.

Diseases and pests

Sorokodnevka is immune to many nightshade diseases. Nematodes and potato cancer are the least common diseases in this variety. It is also resistant to viruses and scab. Preventatively treated tubers are able to resist not only diseases but also pests, including the Colorado potato beetle, cicada, and aphids.

Cleaning and storage

Many Sorokodnevka potato lovers are wondering when to harvest their crop. There's no need to rush. Planting in late May, you can safely harvest in mid-July. You can select tubers using the traditional method of pulling the plant out, or a more gradual method, which allows you to immediately remove the larger tubers and allow the plant to develop smaller ones. Ultra-early varieties are eaten immediately after harvesting. Many of these varieties begin to spoil two weeks after harvest.

Reviews

Alesya:

I've been planting ultra-early varieties for three years now. For a small plot where I want to harvest for table use, they're just the thing.

Vitaly:

Forty-day tubers can produce large, abundant tubers if planted and treated properly before planting. This is my second year growing the "Prior" variety. I haven't found a better one yet.

Tatiana:

For me, the Sorokodnevka variety is a real lifesaver. It's hard to find a good variety that can produce a great harvest in less-than-perfect soil. I struggled with late varieties in my garden for a long time until I finally landed on the ultra-early ones.

Michael:

I grew 'Caprice' and 'Ariel'. I liked the taste of both varieties. Even the early potatoes were surprisingly tasty and had a subtle aroma. The whole family loved them. But 'Sorokodnevka' is certainly not suitable for storing. Perhaps you should plant 'Scarlet' for this purpose, but then you'll need to be extremely careful when selecting and processing the tubers.

Anastasia:

I didn't expect such results from the Sorokodnevka potato variety. A neighbor who has been planting ultra-early varieties for a long time sang its praises to me. After a long period of failure with late varieties due to unstable weather, I decided to switch to this variety. I also plant the Kamensky variety, which has an impressive yield.
