Wasps are potential pests of berry and fruit crops in the garden. They not only damage the fruit but also pose a danger to people and animals. If a wasp colony attacks a person, they can die. These insects must be exterminated as soon as their small colonies appear. Special chemicals, mechanical methods, and folk remedies can help get rid of these pests.
Reasons for wasp settlement and the harm it causes under the roof
Wasps prefer to nest in places inaccessible to their natural enemies (honey buzzards, hedgehogs, rats, and mice). Summer cottages are among the best protected habitats for these insects. They are extremely rare within city limits. Reasons why wasps settle under the roofs of residential buildings include:
- protection from atmospheric phenomena (rain, wind, scorching sun rays);
- protection from ground enemies that will not be able to reach the nest on the roof of the house;
- Access to food in the attic and adjacent garden. Gardeners often store dried fruits and berries in their attics, which can be used as food for wasps.
The insects cause no harm to the roof or the house itself. They pose a danger to sweet garden crops and to people. The wasps' main food source is fruit and berries in the garden. A single swarm can ruin all the fruit grown there. Humans, in turn, are attacked by the insects when they sense a threat to their survival. The wasps begin to bite unprotected areas of the body, injecting their venom. The sting causes severe pain, swelling, and redness.
Important!
Insect bites can cause an allergic reaction, so you should always keep anti-allergy pills in your first aid kit at home.
Methods of dealing with wasps
First, you need to find the insects' nest. Most often, they nest under the roof, between logs, under slate, or in the attic sheathing. Disturbing and destroying the insects must be done with extreme caution.
Physical methods of wasp control
Two simple mechanical methods will allow you to deal with insects on your own.
- Using a candy trap. You can make your own wasp bait at home. You'll need a regular plastic bottle. To make the trap: cut a two-liter water bottle in half, unscrew the cap from the top, turn it upside down, and place it in the bottom of the cut-off container. Secure the two parts together with tape.
Fill the trap with sugar water (equal parts water and sugar), beer, laundry detergent, or home-brewed mash. Hang it near the suspected nest location. Once the insects are trapped, they can't escape; the small space prevents the wet pests from taking off.
- Using a bucket of water. If the wasp nest is located in an accessible location, a simple bucket of water will kill the insects.
Helpful advice!
Before you begin killing wasps, protect yourself with thick, well-tucked clothing to prevent insects from getting underneath. Wear a mosquito mask on your head and thick gloves on your hands.
Take a five-liter bucket and fill it with water. Slowly bring the container to the hive, dip it in, and soak it for 5 minutes. The nest will become completely saturated with the liquid and will fall into the bucket, killing all the insects and larvae. Perform this procedure in the evening, when they are less active and aggressive than during the day. Clean the nest attachment site with a knife and wipe it with a 1% potassium permanganate solution.
Chemical insect control agents
Chemicals can help you get rid of wasps in your garden for good. The range of products is so vast that it's impossible to list them all. Some effective chemicals include:
- Dichlorvos is a popular and inexpensive remedy for wasps and other pests. It is sold as an easy-to-use aerosol spray. To use Dichlorvos: wait until late evening, when all the wasps have gathered in the hive, put on protective clothing, bring a flashlight, a large bag, and the aerosol spray. Approach the nest, place the bag over it, tie it at the top, make a small hole, insert the nozzle of the spray can into the hole, and spray the mixture inside. Leave the bag for half an hour. Then, using a knife, scrape off the nest and the bag without untying it. In the morning, or later that day, burn the hive with the dead insects. Wipe the nest attachment point with vinegar or a potassium permanganate solution.
- SmelNet comes in capsules and can help eliminate infestations of various insects, including wasps. A pest control solution is prepared by mixing 20 grams of the product with 1 liter of water. Apply the resulting solution to wasp nesting areas. The product should be used in the same way as Dichlorvos.
Folk methods of dealing with wasps
Insects can be controlled not only with chemicals but also with folk remedies. The following methods will help you get rid of them:
- Using boiling water. When the sun has completely set, boil a bucket of water and dress appropriately to avoid insect bites. Grab a hoe or shovel, a bucket of boiling water, and a flashlight. Place the bucket of boiling water under the wasp nest, then use the shovel or hoe to dump it into the container of water. Move a considerable distance away, and after twenty minutes, retrieve the bucket of dead insects.
- Fumigation of the nest. Take a smoker used to neutralize bees during honey extraction. Fill a firebox with pine needles and shredded wood. Use the resulting smoke to drive the wasps away from the nest, and then destroy the nest itself.
How to control wasps in hard-to-reach places under the roof
In cases where a wasp nest under the roof is not visible, it is recommended:
- Find the place where they're escaping en masse. Most often, it's one of the "waves" of the slate or a gap between the roof logs.
- Seal the area where they protrude to the surface. Use cement mortar or foam sealant.
- If conditions don't allow sealing all cracks, use poisonous bait. Place traps or poisoned fruit near nesting sites.
Destroy wasp nests on your property wisely. Be sure to protect yourself with thick clothing; don't risk your health or life. If there are a large number of wasp nests on your property, call a pest control service.
