Characteristics of the Ram's Horn pepper, cultivation, and reviews

Pepper

The "Ram's Horn" hot pepper is a demanding variety that requires careful and constant care. If you follow all the cultivation recommendations, you can grow it in your own backyard.

Characteristics and description of the variety

After reading its description, many amateur gardeners will want to enjoy hot peppers and will be able to purchase seeds to grow this variety in their garden.

Productivity

One bush produces an average of 60 aromatic fruits. Therefore, the yield per bush will be 1.8 kg.

Height, plant weight, color, shape

The spreading bush grows to 60 cm tall, completely covered with elongated red pepper fruits. These fruits are cone-shaped, have unwrinkled skin, and reach up to 35 cm in length, weighing approximately 30-35 grams. The peppers bend slightly along their length, resembling a ram's horn, hence the variety's name. The fruits have a distinct aroma and a piquant, sharp flavor.

Ripening speed

This is a mid-late ripening variety. It takes 145 days from seed germination for the pepper to fully ripen. Therefore, it is grown only from seedlings.

Timing of planting seedlings

Planting times vary by region in Russia. Southern regions plant seedlings outdoors in early May, while greenhouses can accommodate pepper seedlings as early as mid-April. Northern regions, located at the latitude of the Moscow region, grow peppers exclusively in greenhouses, and if the greenhouse is unheated, they are planted around May 20th.

Therefore, based on this, seeds are sown 2.5 months before the required date, that is, the Krasnodar Territory will plant seeds in early to mid-February.

IMPORTANT! Follow the timing of planting seeds for seedlings to get good results.

Feedback from those who planted

Antonina

This year, in my greenhouse, this variety grew to a height of almost 90 cm and was covered with long pepper fruits. The fruits were fragrant and had a piquant, sharp flavor. They are well suited for a variety of culinary dishes.

Arina

Well, it's a very productive variety. The bush was completely covered with peppers, so the foliage was barely visible. I plant it both in the open ground and in a greenhouse, where I plant a couple of plants. If the summer is warm, it produces equally in different locations, but in cold summers, a greenhouse is definitely a lifesaver.

Vladimir

I always grow many different varieties of hot peppers in my garden, as I then sell them at market. As for the Ram's Horn, it consistently produces a large harvest of excellent hot peppers that are in demand. So, this variety is a regular guest in my garden.

Features of growing and caring for the variety

Growing this pepper variety begins with sowing seeds. To ensure healthy seedlings, follow these recommendations:

  1. The seeds are planted only in nitrogen-rich soil, which must be loose to allow oxygen to reach the growing root system.
  2. The container must have holes to drain excess water after watering.
  3. Before sowing, seeds are checked for germination and disinfected.
IMPORTANT! You can check for germination using a salt solution. Seeds that float to the surface are not suitable for sowing seedlings and should be removed and discarded. Continue working with the remaining seeds.
  1. The seeds are spread in moist soil and covered with transparent glass or a plastic bag. This will help improve germination conditions.
  2. At this time, planted seeds require an air temperature of around 25 degrees Celsius.
  3. When the seedlings emerge, the air temperature is lowered to 18 degrees Celsius and the cover is removed from the bowl.
  4. During this time, it's necessary to provide illumination to the seedlings to prevent them from becoming leggy. Special plant lamps are used for this purpose.
  5. Growing seedlings need to be monitored and watered on time, turning them in different directions towards the sun's rays.

IMPORTANT! Water the seedlings with warm water and by immersion.

Before transplanting seedlings to their permanent location outdoors, they need to be hardened off. Hardening off is done over the course of 10 days, gradually acclimating the seedlings to outdoor conditions.

Holes for planting seedlings of this variety of hot pepper are dug according to a 50x60 cm pattern.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Like all different varieties, this pepper has both positive and negative qualities.

Positive:
  • excellent marketable fruits;
  • piquant taste;
  • high yield from one bush;
  • good seed germination.
Negatives:
  • For a good harvest it needs a lot of warmth and timely watering.

The main purpose of the variety

The fruits of this variety are versatile and are used in a variety of culinary dishes:

  • lecho;
  • serves as a seasoning for meat;
  • used in the preparation of various marinades.

In which regions is it grown?

It can be grown anywhere, but in northern regions only in greenhouses. Cold temperatures will kill the hot pepper plant.

Resistance to diseases and adverse conditions

The Ram's Horn variety is highly resistant to various fungal diseases. However, care must be taken, as the plant can sometimes be affected by fungal diseases, especially in a greenhouse with its hot and humid climate. To prevent this, follow these steps:

  • after each watering, ventilate the greenhouse;
  • plant plants according to the accepted planting pattern;
  • treat bushes with folk remedies to protect against fungal diseases.

When the environment becomes unfavorable for growing peppers, it is necessary to ensure that the air temperature in the greenhouse does not drop, otherwise the peppers may become diseased and die.

IMPORTANT! The diseased bush must be carefully removed from the garden bed and destroyed outside the plot to prevent contamination of the soil.

Storage rules

Hot peppers store well on the bottom shelf of the refrigerator in a plastic bag. However, when storing them this way, they need to be ventilated to prevent gray mold. In this case, the peppers will keep until March. Hot peppers can also be strung on strings and dried. In this case, the storage area should be dry.

Preparing for winter

Some gardeners plant a couple of bushes in large containers and then bring them indoors when the cold weather sets in. Alternatively, in the fall, carefully remove the bush from the open ground, complete with soil, and transplant it into a larger bucket, then bring it indoors. This way, it will continue to bear fruit until spring.

This pepper doesn't have many fans, but it's essential in the household, as it's used to prepare various dishes that the whole family will enjoy eating.
