Description and photos of the "Prince Igor" pepper, reviews

Pepper

The Prince Igor pepper variety is a hybrid of Russian breeders. It is very popular among gardeners and summer residents. It is prized for its ease of cultivation and high yield.

Description of the variety and its characteristics

The Prince Igor sweet pepper is a mid-season hybrid. Full ripening takes 109-115 days. The plant is medium-sized, 60-70 cm tall, spreading, and highly productive. A single plant can produce up to 25 large peppers at a time. Because of this, it requires support. Up to 20 kilograms of yield can be harvested from one square meter.

The fruits are large, shaped like elongated cubes. The fruit walls are thick—7-9 mm—firm and juicy. They weigh up to 120 grams or more. The color of the unripe fruit is dark green, and when fully ripe, it turns deep red. The flavor is sweet. The aroma is distinct and fragrant. It contains a lot of vitamin C. Suitable for fresh consumption, processing, and freezing.

Features and disadvantages of the variety

The hybrid is tolerant of low temperatures and low light. It is also resistant to diseases such as tobacco mosaic virus, verticillium wilt, and fusarium. Another major advantage is its ability to grow both indoors and outdoors.

The disadvantages include the fact that Prince Igor does not tolerate prolonged drought and is demanding when it comes to watering.

Growing and care

Seeds for seedlings are sown in late February or early March. They are pricked out when they have 2-3 true leaves. After this, the seedlings are fed with a superphosphate solution. Use light, water- and air-permeable soil for sowing. A mixture of humus, sod, and peat works well. They are planted in the garden or greenhouse two months after germination. Further care consists of watering, loosening the soil, removing weeds, and applying fertilizer.

Prince Igor is a tall plant, so when planting it in its permanent location, place a stake in the hole where the pepper is located. This will allow the plant to be tied to the stake later without damaging the roots. Planting should be done in a 40x60 cm pattern.

Peppers aren't particularly picky about soil. However, they produce best in light, fertile soils. Ideal sites include those after planting legumes, cabbage, cucumbers, or carrots. Prepare the soil in advance, adding organic fertilizer and wood ash. Remove all weeds and dig the soil thoroughly a week before planting.

Peppers of this variety are very responsive to fertilizers, so it is worth applying 3-4 fertilizers per season:

  • 1st feeding is done a few days after planting the seedlings with a superphosphate solution.
  • 2nd feeding is carried out during the flowering phase with a solution of superphosphate, urea and potassium.
  • 3. Complementary feeding is introduced during the fruit ripening phase with a solution of superphosphate and potassium salt.

Between these main feedings, you can also add intermediate fertilizers. Before the first feeding, immediately after planting, you can feed the peppers with an herbal infusion. Between the second and third feedings, you can fertilize the peppers with an infusion of mullein or bird droppings.

During drought, the Prince Igor pepper should be watered more often with warm, settled water.

Regions where Prince Igor pepper is grown

The variety is cold-resistant and therefore suitable for all regions of the Russian Federation, even the northernmost ones with short and cold summers.
