First lawn mowing after planting: when to do it

Greens and herbs

Lawn care is an essential part of maintaining a tidy garden. To ensure the lawn is regularly maintained, it's important to know when to mow it after seeding. It's important to mow it in a timely manner using specialized gardening tools and specialized equipment.

Why is regular grass mowing necessary?

Lawn mowing isn't just for aesthetic reasons. Mowing is essential due to the specific nature of the grasses being sown. To create a neat and dense grass cover, plants taken from the wild are used. Lawn crops are characterized as follows:

  • grow quickly;
  • undemanding to soil quality;
  • easily adapt to weather conditions;
  • strengthen the turf;
  • suppress the growth of weeds;
  • form dense bushy plantings.

Due to the active growth of lawn grass, it should be mowed regularly.

Height of grass on a lawn

Mowing puts stress on plants. Cut grass loses moisture, dedicates its resources to regeneration, and is vulnerable to damage and disease. To reduce the impact of mowing on lawn crops, they should be shortened by no more than one-third. After each mowing, the grass should be thoroughly watered and fertilized.

Important!
If the lawn is not mowed regularly or if it is mown too low, weeds and moss may begin to grow on the site.
Grass height

The height of the grass on a lawn should be adjusted to the local climate. In most Russian regions, mowing the grass too low is not recommended. This will cause the grass to dry out quickly and form a hard surface. The optimal height for a parterre lawn is 3-4 cm.

In garden and park areas and recreational lawns, grass can be trimmed to a stem height of 4-7 cm. This will make the grass suitable for games, walks, picnics, and outdoor activities.

Sports turf areas are seeded with cereal crops. This choice is based on the ability of these varieties to quickly recover from trampling. Grass for football pitches, golf courses, rugby, or field hockey is mown to a height of 3-4 cm.

Pay attention to weather conditions. In hot, dry weather, the lawn should be left slightly longer than recommended. This will prevent the plants from drying out and promote rapid restoration of the grass cover.

When to mow the lawn for the first time after seeding

You can start planting your lawn any time after the weather becomes consistently warm and the soil dries. Depending on weather conditions, you can seed your lawn in late April or early May. Allow the seedlings to emerge uniformly and reach a height of 12 cm, then mow. The first mowing should be done to a stem height of 8 cm.

Subsequent mowing to maintain the lawn in order is carried out over the course of two seasons:

  • ceremonial – 4-5 cm;
  • for rest (functional) – 5-7 cm;
  • garden and park – 6-7 cm;
  • sports – 4-5 cm.

In the third year, the lawn can be mowed to the recommended parameters, depending on the site's intended use. The first mowings are carried out at the end of May. Subsequent mowings throughout the season are carried out every 2 cm as the stems grow.

The approximate frequency of mowing during the summer season is given in the table.

It's important to maintain the appearance of the area and the condition of the grass. Regular trimming will help keep the area tidy and create favorable conditions for the lawn to grow evenly and spread.

If the lawn is located on a slope, mowing should be done in the direction of the slope.

Healthy!
An overgrown lawn with tall grass can be cut only to 1/3 of the height of the stems.

Lawn mowing tools

To mow your lawn, you need to choose a tool that will get the job done quickly and easily. To choose the right equipment, you need to analyze the composition of your lawn grass, estimate the area you need to mow, and evaluate the desired effect.

For lawn care use:

  • A lawn mower. These can be mechanical or electric units with drums equipped with blades. For larger areas, electric or cordless lawn mowers are suitable. For smaller areas, a manual mower is effective.
  • Trimmers. These are scythes with nylon line as the cutting element. Trimmers can be electric or gas-powered. These tools make it easy to mow small areas and hard-to-reach places.
  • Brushcutters. These tools consist of a scythe with a reel containing cutting elements. These are most often gasoline-powered or battery-powered. A brushcutter can be used to cover large areas and provide a precise cut in hard-to-reach or uneven terrain.
  • Lawn shears. This is a mechanical tool for trimming grass in small areas or hard-to-reach places. The height can be adjusted by eye only.

The choice of tool also depends on budget. Trimmers are the cheapest lawn mowing tool. Lawn mowers are more expensive, but capable of producing a neat, even cut.
