The grape varieties and hybrids of breeder E. G. Pavlovsky are renowned not only in Russia but also in other countries. Thanks to his efforts, more than four dozen varieties have been developed, and his work is ongoing. Among the newest varieties is the "Memory of the Teacher" hybrid, distinguished by its extremely early ripening period and excellent berry yield.
From the history of creation
The early-ripening hybrid is named in honor of Ivan Aleksandrovich Kostrikov, a scientist at the Potapenko Research Institute. Collaboration with the scientist yielded results, and the hobbyist developed high-yielding hybrids that bear fruit even in harsh regions such as Siberia, the Urals, and the northwest.
Parental pair: Russian Talisman and American Cardinal. From their parents, the hybrid inherited disease resistance, high yield, and ease of maintenance.
Description of the variety
The bushes form vigorous shoots that quickly regrow after spring frosts. Young stems are greenish, while mature branches are brown with a slight reddish tint. The leaves are deeply dissected and attached to the shoots by long, red petioles. The leaf blade is five-lobed and bright green.
The hybrid vine ripens almost 100%. Additional planting is required. varieties Pollination is not necessary. The flowers are bisexual, and pollination is excellent. Pea formation is not observed with proper care.
The "Memory of the Teacher" hybrid is declared a super-early variety. Depending on climate conditions and proper agricultural practices, berries can be harvested as early as late July or early August. The overall growing season lasts 95-105 days. Yields are stable, above average.
The species is recommended for cultivation in regions with a warm climate, in middle zone Further north, the hybrid needs to be securely protected from the cold. It is frost-resistant to -22ºC, but don't test the vine's endurance. It's advisable to prepare the plant for winter in the fall and cover it in trenches.
Characteristics of berries
The hybrid variety "Memory of the Teacher" is renowned for its robust clusters. The bunches are beautiful and medium-dense. The shape is conical, and sometimes a wing develops. The average weight is 500-1000 grams. With proper care and ideal growing conditions, a cluster can reach two kilograms.
The berries are oval, weighing 12-15 grams. They are initially dark red, but as they ripen, the color changes to a deep purple with a crimson tint. The skin is medium thick and barely noticeable when eaten. The flesh is firm, juicy, and firm.
A table-type hybrid, it boasts excellent commercial qualities and flavor. The flavor is pleasant, with a subtle tartness. Gardeners note a hint of nutmeg, but this depends on growing conditions. Sugar content is 17-20%.
The berries are used for dessert, and they also make delicious juices and compotes. Private farmers make delicious homemade liqueurs and wine from the grapes. The drinks are appetizing and have a rich Bordeaux color.
Advantages and disadvantages
Pavlovsky's hybrid has been praised by gardeners across the region. At the all-Russian "Sunny Bunch" competition, this grape became the winner in the Consumer Choice category (2015).
Advantages:
- good taste;
- early ripening of the crop;
- excellent ripening of vines;
- resistance to fungal infections;
- unpretentiousness;
- long-term fruiting.
The berries hang on the bushes for a long time without discoloration or loss of flavor, and they don't fall off. The clusters are unaffected by rain, retaining their shape, and the berries don't burst. It's been noted that prolonged ripening improves the berries' flavor, becoming rich and nutmeg-like.
The hybrid grows on a variety of rootstocks, making it convenient for winegrowers to experiment. The berries are suitable for transportation, which is important for growing the hybrid commercially.
Flaws:
- despite the fairly high frost resistance rates, the vine needs to be covered for the winter;
- It is essential to carry out standardization, otherwise the yield indicators for the following season will be significantly reduced;
- does not tolerate extreme heat well;
- requires moderate watering and reacts negatively to soil moisture.
In spring, the hybrid's shoots are often damaged by recurrent frosts. Prolonged summer drought affects the quality of the berries: the sugar content in the pulp drops, and the flavor deteriorates.
Selecting a site and landing
The hybrid is planted in well-lit areas. In regions with strong winds, it's best to choose a spot near a wall, away from any fruit trees.
Any soil is suitable, provided poor soils are fertilized. Organic matter, such as peat, rotted manure, and compost, can be added to improve the structure. The plant prefers loamy soils, and seedlings in such soils are less susceptible to phylloxera.
Planting times depend on regional conditions. According to gardeners, this hybrid tolerates spring planting better. With proper care, seedlings quickly adapt to their new environment, take root, and grow. Fall planting is recommended only in the south. Vigorous bushes varieties Teacher's memory saplings require a large feeding area. Leave 2-2.2 meters between seedlings.
Features of agricultural technology
New hybrid grow in compliance with traditional agricultural practices. Standard set:
- watering;
- application of fertilizers;
- loosening and mulching;
- control of diseases, pests, prevention;
- Shaping bushes, pruning.
At the same time, there are some subtleties in care, knowledge of which will allow you to get an excellent harvest.
Watering
During the first year after planting, grape bushes are watered every 7-10 days. The weather is taken into account, but moisture deficits are avoided. After a month, longer intervals between waterings are introduced – up to 20-25 days. Watering stops in mid-August.
From the second year, the bushes are watered according to the approximate scheme:
- early spring (provided that the soil is dry, not waterlogged after the snow melts);
- before the flowers begin to bloom;
- after the flowering period of the crop;
- after harvesting (if there is no rain in the fall).
It's not recommended to water the grapes while they're ripening. Otherwise, the pulp will become watery and the skins will crack.
Top dressing
To increase yields and obtain stable harvests every season grape Fertilize the plants accordingly, and do not exceed the recommended dosage (especially when using mineral supplements).
Young vines don't require additional nutrition. The fertilizer applied at planting is sufficient for two years. Starting from the third season, additional fertilizing is mandatory:
- before the flowers begin to appear;
- two weeks before the berries form;
- 16-18 days before harvest.
The first feeding consists of organic matter (mullein diluted 1:10 in water) and nitrophoska (60 grams per bucket). The second feeding consists of Kalimag (10 grams per bucket of water) and ammonium nitrate (20 grams per bucket of water).
In the third fertilizing grapes Only phosphorus and potassium are needed to increase the weight of the berries and improve their flavor. Potassium salt and superphosphate (20 grams per bucket of water) are suitable.
In addition to root sprays, grapes are also sprayed on the leaves. These treatments are effective in cloudy weather, allowing the plant to absorb nutrients more quickly.
Boric acid (3-5 grams of the preparation per bucket of water), ash infusion (a liter of ash per 10 liters of water), and superphosphate extract are used.
Harvesting
The berries are ready for picking as early as early August. In the south, with careful care and favorable weather conditions, the berries varieties The teacher's memory matures by July 25-28.
Experienced winegrowers take their time harvesting, allowing the bunches to fully ripen and develop flavor and sweetness. This hybrid's berries don't fall off or become raisins. The only threat is birds, so they always cover the vines with nets and install ratchets.
Disease prevention
The "Memory of the Teacher" grape hybrid is marketed by its creator as resilient and resistant to infections. While these data are still being studied due to the variety's recent market introduction, gardener reviews indicate high resistance. In this respect, the hybrid is similar to its parent, the "Talisman" variety, which is rarely affected by fungal diseases. Preventive measures include treating the plantings throughout the growing season:
- at the beginning of April, spray the bushes with a 3% solution of iron sulfate;
- Before the green cone phase, treat the plantings with Vertimek (it helps against pest larvae that have survived the winter);
- at the stage of bud opening and before the formation of flower stalks, spray with Topaz, Ridomil Gold;
- After flowering, if necessary, treat the bushes with Quadris or Strobi.
From the moment the berries are formed until ripening, the use of insecticides is prohibited. If pests are detected on the grapes, bioactive agents such as Baikal and Fitosporin are used, but in very small doses. In the fall, after harvesting, and before wintering, the crop is sprayed with a 3% solution of ferrous sulfate.
Pest control
The following pests "threaten" grapes:
- leaf rollers;
- phylloxera;
- Marbled May Beetles.
Timely preventative treatments help protect your plants from dangerous insects and prevent them from appearing on your property. Bushes are treated several times per season, adhering to the recommended spraying schedule. Here's a sample treatment schedule:
- in early spring, while the buds are still “dormant” (use a 3% solution of iron sulfate);
- during the period of bud opening;
- before the flowers appear;
- after harvesting.
A wide range of insecticides with different spectrums of action is available. Each individual case requires a specific product tailored to the insect in question. Captan is effective against spider mites, while DNOC and Kelthane are effective against grape berry moths.
Wasps and birds cause significant damage to the Memory of the Teacher grape plantings. Nets, rattles, and decoys are used to protect against birds. Wasps are more difficult to control, so a comprehensive approach is used:
- destroy wasp nests in the garden;
- they set traps from plastic bottles;
- cover the bushes with light and thin non-woven material.
Wasp netting is not suitable.
The hybrid "Memory of the Teacher" variety, developed by winegrower Pavlovsky, deserves the attention of gardeners. This grape variety boasts high yields and excellent flavor. It is suitable for shipping, making it a promising choice for cultivation not only in private vineyards but also on private farms.
Reviews
Konstantin, Volgograd
The hybrid grows quickly and produces gorgeous bunches. Almost all the berries are uniform in weight. There are no peas. The flavor is simple; I didn't detect any Muscat notes. I grow it for myself and for sale, and customers really like this grape.

I've been growing this grape for four years. I first sampled bunches at a show in Novocherkassk. I liked the flavor of this hybrid and decided to plant it. The taste is quite good, but it's an acquired taste. The presentation is excellent, with large bunches. I don't sell it at market, but my neighbors have tried it and say it has a pleasant flavor and is attractive.
