Description of the best varieties of long pepper

Pepper

Sweet red peppers are a healthy vegetable that can be eaten raw or canned. Despite their challenging care, they are a favorite among gardeners, as their flavor and nutritional benefits fully compensate for the effort involved. Long sweet peppers, also known as bell peppers, contain a large amount of vitamins and nutrients.

However, red peppers aren't beneficial for everyone. For example, if you have gastritis or a stomach ulcer, this vegetable is contraindicated. Furthermore, long bell peppers are also not recommended for those with high acidity, ischemia, hypertension, or epilepsy. Stewed or baked peppers are gentler on the stomach.

Varieties of sweet long pepper

Breeders have developed a large number of different varieties of sweet red peppers with an elongated shape. They differ in ripening time, growing regions, and taste and appearance characteristics. Let's look at varieties that can be grown in greenhouses and open ground.

Cockatoo

The Kakadu variety is considered a hybrid and has one distinctive feature: its size. It gets its name from the shape of the fruit, which resembles the elongated beak of a cockatoo. A single ripe pepper can grow up to 30 cm in length, with some even larger. Ripe peppers are red in color. Each pepper weighs half a kilogram. The skin is up to 7 mm thick.

Because the pepper's flesh is dense and aromatic, it can be used both fresh and canned. A single plant produces up to 4 kg of fruit. Another characteristic of this variety is its resistance to rot and tobacco mosaic. When growing, it's important to ensure that each plant produces no more than 10 fruits.

Important! Since the Kakadu variety's bushes are very tall, they need to be regularly staked to prevent them from breaking.

Marconi

An early-ripening variety of long peppers, the bush reaches one meter in height. The shape of the pepper resembles an oblong cone. A ripe pepper weighs up to 200 grams and is 25 cm long. The skin is 5 mm thick, and the flesh is fleshy and tender. A single square meter can yield up to 10 kg of fruit. Marconi peppers can be green or red, depending on the stage of ripeness.

This variety is considered one of the best in terms of taste and commercial qualities.

Orien

The plant is distinguished by its small size, reaching up to half a meter in height. Orjen peppers have a slightly elongated, longish shape. A single fruit can reach 25 cm in length and 5 cm in width. The skin is 5 mm thick. A ripe pepper can weigh up to 150 grams. Unripe peppers are yellow, but turn red when ripe.

One bush produces an average of 4 kilograms. The fruits can be used for any purpose, from fresh eating to canning. This is due to the excellent taste of the Orien variety.

Sweet banana

The variety gets its name from the color of its fruit: the first fruits are bright yellow. When fully ripe, the fruit takes on a reddish-orange hue. The plant reaches 70 centimeters in height, making it a medium-sized variety. Banana-shaped peppers reach 20 cm in length. The wall thickness reaches 8 mm, and the fruit weighs an average of 250 grams. Up to 5 kg of fruit can be harvested from one square meter.

The variety's advantage is its high-quality fruit. The fruit has a delicate aroma and fleshy pulp, making it suitable for consumption in any form. The Sweet Banana variety is resistant to the main diseases common to this class of peppers.

Red Elephant

This variety is considered a tall variety, growing up to one meter or more in height. It is a vigorous, semi-spreading plant. A distinctive feature of the Red Elephant variety's fruits is their glossy sheen. The fruits are cone-shaped. The first fruits are greenish in color, while fully ripened ones are a rich red.

One mid-season pepper weighs 150 grams, is 20 cm long, and has a skin 4.5 mm thick. Up to 8 kg of harvest can be harvested from one square meter. Red Elephant peppers have aromatic and fleshy flesh.

Shepherd

The bush of this variety reaches 50 cm in height. The weight of a single fruit ranges from 220 to 270 grams, and the length reaches 25 cm. The fruits of the Pastukh variety are distinguished by their wall thickness, which can reach 1 cm. The shape of the fruit is also unusual: conical, with a slightly pointed tip. When unripe, the peppers have a greenish or yellowish tint; when fully ripe, they acquire a reddish tint.

The Pastukh variety is excellent for canning, as its flesh is juicy and soft. It is resistant to the main pepper diseases, especially tobacco mosaic and leaf spot.

Sugar cone

The variety gets its name from its juicy and sweet flesh. The plant grows up to 70 cm tall. Its distinctive feature is the abundant foliage of its robust bushes. The fruit's dimensions are as follows: length – 18-19 cm, wall and skin thickness – 7 mm, and the weight of one pepper is 140 grams.

The pepper is cone-shaped and slightly ribbed. The early fruits are green, then, once fully developed, they turn red. A distinctive feature of the Sugar Horn variety is its ability to produce abundant crops several times in a single season.

Hottabych

This variety gets its name from the trunk-like shape of its fruit. It's a hybrid and can reach a height of up to one and a half meters. The average fruit weight is 110 grams, with a skin thickness of 5 mm. The fruit is a delicate green color that turns yellow as it ripens. A single square meter can yield up to 8 kg of fruit.

The unique feature of the Khottabych variety is that it can be stored for a long time, while preserving all its beneficial properties and taste.

Mammoth tusks

This hybrid variety will amaze everyone with its enormous size. Each bush grows up to one meter in height and can produce up to 13 fruits. Each fruit weighs up to 300 grams and reaches 30 cm in length. The pepper exhibits three colors: first green, then light yellow, and finally red.

A distinctive feature of the Mammoth Tusk variety is that it will always produce a good and abundant harvest, regardless of the climatic conditions of the region where it is grown.

Red Horn

The Horn variety's fruits are red and cylindrical, oblong in shape. They grow on bushes that reach a height of 1 meter. One medium-sized pepper weighs up to 125 grams. The color changes depending on the level of ripeness: initially green, then red. This variety produces fruits with very soft and juicy flesh.

Python

The Python variety grows tall and leafy bushes, reaching up to one and a half meters in height. Each fruit weighs 50 grams and reaches 30 cm in length. Up to 4 kg of harvest can be obtained from one square meter. As the pepper ripens, it first turns green, then yellow, and finally, the fruit turns red. Since the flesh is not bitter, it can be eaten at any stage of ripening.

Important! The Python variety looks very much like a hot pepper, but it's not—it's a sweet pepper.

Growing rules

Growing elongated sweet peppers is easy if you follow basic care guidelines. These guidelines include the following:

  • Optimal air temperature. Peppers need an air temperature of 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) to thrive. Therefore, if climate conditions don't allow it, it's best to grow peppers in a greenhouse. Peppers can dry out at temperatures of 30 degrees Celsius (96 degrees Fahrenheit).
  • Proper watering. It is recommended to water peppers twice a week. Two liters of water is enough for one plant. After each watering, the soil should be mulched.
  • Fertilizing. It is recommended to fertilize the plant three times over 30 days. This will significantly impact the pepper's development and fruiting. It is best to fertilize the plants early in the morning.

If you follow these simple rules, the plant will produce a bountiful harvest of tasty and juicy peppers.

I decided to try a new variety of sweet pepper, Red Horn. I didn't take great care of it, just watered it regularly and fertilized it once a month. The harvest was a pleasant surprise and very satisfying. What I really liked was the amazing flavor of the fruit.

I've been growing Khottabycha and Sakharny Rozhok varieties in my garden for several years now. These varieties are amazing in taste and appearance. The sweet, large fruits are delicious and healthy. What's especially important to me is that the seeds of these varieties germinate quickly.

I've been growing Red Elephant and Marconi sweet peppers at my dacha for three years now. To be honest, I bought the seeds based on the pretty pictures on the packaging. But I wasn't disappointed at all: the fruits are large and fleshy. My family loves eating them fresh in salads, as well as roasted over a fire.
