Sweet peppers for greenhouses in the Moscow region: a review of the best varieties

Pepper

Sweet peppers are heat-loving vegetables with a long growing season. For this reason, it is commonly believed that sweet peppers can only be successfully grown in southern regions. However, breeders are constantly working to improve the quality of planting material, and today there are varieties that are successfully grown in the Moscow region climate.

The best varieties of sweet peppers for the Moscow region

The Moscow region has its own unique climate, which must be taken into account when growing any given pepper variety. The most suitable varieties include "Cornet," "Orange Miracle," "Health," "Winnie the Pooh," "Chardash," and "Buratino."

Cornet

"Cornet" is an early-ripening variety. It is unusual in that the fruits turn dark brown or inky purple when fully ripe. The plant is semi-determinate, with vigorous but not heavily branched vines. The foliage is sparse. The average height is 160-170 cm, but can reach up to two meters.

Cornet peppers are characterized by good fruit set and consistent fruiting throughout the season. Full ripening occurs in approximately four and a half months. Ripe peppers are juicy, averaging 200 grams in weight. The shape of the peppers resembles an inverted prism, but with a blunt tip. The walls of the peppers are textured, ribbed, and approximately 5 mm thick.

Interesting! The Cornet pepper stands out for its high levels of carotene and vitamin C.

This variety is suitable for growing in heated greenhouses, as well as unheated plastic greenhouses. With proper care and favorable weather conditions, a single plant can yield up to 15 peppers.

Orange miracle

Orange Miracle is also a sweet, early-ripening pepper variety whose ripe fruits have an unusual sunny orange hue.

Important! There is also a hot ornamental pepper grown indoors under the same name.

This variety has a growing season of approximately three and a half months. The plants reach a height of one meter and have a very beautiful, unusual appearance. Ripe peppers are elongated cubes, with walls approximately 6 mm thick and prominent grooves. The fruit weighs approximately 230-250 grams, and the yield is approximately ten per plant.

Orange Miracle can be grown both in greenhouses and in open ground.

Health

The "Zdorovie" sweet pepper is a high-yielding, very early-ripening variety. The plant grows quite tall, over one and a half meters tall. However, its growing season is shorter than that of previous varieties, lasting two and a half months.

Important! This variety is unique in that pepper ovaries form even when the plants receive insufficient light.

Compared to the Orange Miracle and Cornet, the Zdorovye peppers are not very large, weighing approximately 40 grams. The pepper's walls are also a couple of millimeters thinner. The pepper is cone-shaped with a pointed tip, measuring just over 10 cm in length. Ripe peppers have a uniform red color.

Winnie the Pooh

The Winnie-the-Pooh variety has been known to gardeners since the 1980s and remains popular today. It's also an early-ripening sweet pepper grown both in greenhouses and open ground. It's very productive and easy to care for. A good harvest of Winnie-the-Pooh can be obtained even in the cool Ural climate.

Ripening occurs within three and a half months, but the harvest can be obtained earlier in greenhouse conditions. Plants of this variety are short, reaching only 30 cm in height. The Winnie-the-Pooh peppers are arranged in a cluster on the bush, ripen very evenly, and despite their name, are small, weighing only 50-70 grams. The peppers are red-orange in color, with a wall thickness of approximately 5 mm.

Czardas

The Czardas variety is early and cold-hardy. It is grown in greenhouses and open ground. The harvest begins in three months. This determinate variety grows from 60-70 cm to 1 m in height.

Pepper fruits grow in clusters on the bush. When ripe, the cone-shaped, pointed peppers are orange-red. When unripe, the fruits are yellow-orange and can also be eaten at this stage of ripeness. Ripe peppers weigh approximately 250 grams. The pepper wall thickness is approximately 6 mm. With proper care, a single plant can yield up to 18 peppers per season.

Pinocchio

Buratino is a hybrid, and a very early one at that. Fruit sets uniformly. The harvest is ready in three months. The plant is semi-determinate, growing from approximately 70 cm to 1 m in height.

Ripe Buratino peppers have a very interesting gradient color—from scarlet to deep burgundy. The peppers are cone-shaped and very elongated. Each pepper weighs approximately 80-120 grams. The pepper wall thickness is 5 mm. Up to 15 peppers can be harvested from a single plant per season. This variety has excellent storage and transportability.

I have a dacha near Moscow. I've been planting sweet bell peppers there for years. True, I have to buy seedlings due to poor growing conditions. But I can say I always get a harvest. That's because I choose the right varieties, including those described in this article. Many gardeners, in their quest for the latest trends, make the mistake of trying to grow pepper varieties suitable for southern regions in cool climates. These attempts are, of course, doomed to failure. Don't be fooled by pretty pictures on the packaging; read the variety's specifications carefully.

We absolutely love the Orange Miracle. It's a beautiful, fleshy pepper. When the orange-caramel fruits ripen, the green bush looks like some kind of ornamental plant in the garden.

For many years, in addition to new varieties, we've been buying Winnie-the-Pooh pepper seedlings. We grow them in a greenhouse. They're a very convenient size and a versatile variety. We use them fresh in salads, preserve them whole and in wedges, and they're also excellent for making stuffed peppers.
