Bell peppers are heat-loving crops, so for a long time they were grown only in the southern regions. However, thanks to the development of new types of covering materials, some varieties of sweet peppers can now be grown in the Urals.
Today, it's considered beneficial to plant early-ripening varieties, as the Ural region experiences late warmth and early rainy autumns, possibly even frosts. However, not all of them produce a good harvest compared to late-season, frost-resistant varieties.
Montero
The growing season lasts approximately 95 days. The bushes reach 1.2 meters in height. 'Montero' is suitable for growing in any type of greenhouse. The peppers ripen quite thick, with almost a centimeter of flesh, elongated, and weighing approximately 300 grams. The skin is glossy and iridescent red.
If you regularly feed the bushes, you can harvest peppers weighing up to 900 grams. This variety is prized for its rich, full-bodied flavor. "Montero" produces a bountiful harvest: up to seven kilograms of fruit can be harvested from one square meter of plot.
United
A fairly early-ripening variety, Edino has proven itself popular with gardeners in the Urals. It's a versatile variety, successfully grown in greenhouses and garden plots. It grows as a low-growing bush, reaching no more than 80 cm in height, even in greenhouse conditions. The fruits ripen into cubes, with walls approximately 10 mm thick, weighing up to 200 grams.
"Edin" produces a good harvest in cool temperatures and in excess soil moisture caused by heavy rains. This pepper's seedlings don't need to be kept indoors. If the weather settles and stays warm, the seedlings can be planted directly in the ground.
Winnie the Pooh
The Winnie-the-Pooh variety is an early-ripening variety. It takes 100 days from the first sprouts to ripe fruit. The bushes are low and compact, reaching 25 cm in height. They have a standard shape, with branches growing densely around the trunk and sparse foliage. The low bush size makes this pepper suitable for growing even in small greenhouses or on beds covered with plastic.
The flesh is thick, 6 mm thick, and the flavor is excellent, with a sweet peppery taste. All the fruits ripen at the same time, reminiscent of scarlet bouquets in a garden bed.
Amber
A versatile variety for growing in the Urals. The fruits ripen early, taking 115 days from the first sprouts to peppers. The pepper gets its name from its orange color. The bush is medium-sized, reaching approximately 80–90 cm in height. It is grown in greenhouses, with the bushes tied up. The peppers grow cone-shaped and quite large. Each one weighs between 100 and 120 grams, with a wall thickness of 7 cm. Yantar produces a good harvest, but will require fertilization and supplemental feeding throughout the growing season.
Agapovsky
A very attractive pepper, it produces a fairly abundant harvest in closed greenhouses and gardens. Each pepper weighs 120-130 grams, with walls up to 8 mm thick. The peppers are very tasty, pleasant to the taste, and withstand long-term storage and long-distance transport.
Kolobok
This variety was specifically bred for the Ural and northern regions. The bushes are small and compact, only 30 cm tall. This small size allows for dense plantings in garden beds.
"Kolobok" peppers are round, weighing 130-150 grams each, with walls 5-7 mm thick. This variety produces a high yield. The fruits should be picked slightly underripe to allow the peppers to cope with the growth of other peppers that have already set.
Dobrynya Nikitich
This variety has a slightly spreading habit and produces large, dark-red fruits. The peppers are sweet, weighing up to 150 grams, and have thick walls, up to 10 mm. The period from seedling germination to ripe peppers is 110 days. This variety is highly resistant to root and fruit rot.
Knight
This variety is grown in open fields and tunnel shelters. It grows as a low-growing bush, up to 50 cm tall. The cone-shaped fruits have dense, glossy, dark red skin. Each pepper weighs approximately 140 grams. The "Vityaz" variety is resistant to various diseases, fluctuating soil temperatures, and mild drought.
Bogatyr
"Bogatyr" is a mid-season variety with a growing season of 120-130 days. The peppers grow large and cone-shaped, weighing 220-250 grams each and reaching a good length of 16-18 cm. The bush is voluminous and spreading. If you plant it in a greenhouse, you'll need to tie it up.
This variety is popular for its resistance to disease and soil contamination, its long shelf life, and its ability to be transported without damage. It has gained popularity among gardeners in northern latitudes, especially for those seeking to harvest for sale or winter preservation.
Atlas
This pepper variety can be grown in open ground or under plastic. Ripening time from seedling germination is 115-125 days. The peppers are neat, cone-shaped, and dark red when ripe. "Atlant" is a large-fruited variety, with each pepper weighing over 200 grams and having a wall thickness of 7 mm. This variety has its own unique characteristics.
Red and yellow bull
These pepper varieties are mid-season ripening and differ only in color. They grow prismatic in shape and are quite large. Each pepper weighs 220-230 grams, with walls 8 mm thick. They ripen 110-120 days after emergence. These varieties produce a large harvest. Each plant can yield up to 10 kg of pepper per season.
Merchant
The "Kupets" variety ripens in 120 days from sowing. The plants are medium-sized, reaching 90 cm in greenhouse conditions. The peppers ripen into a cylindrical shape and are considered medium-sized, weighing between 100 and 120 grams each. "Kupets" differs from other varieties in that if you transplant the seedlings into the ground in late spring, you'll harvest them as early as late August or early September.
This variety tolerates sudden cold spells and prolonged periods of watering very well. Each bush can yield up to 5 kg of fruit. When choosing a variety for planting in the Urals, consider its frost resistance, adaptability to varying daylight hours, and short warm spells.
Reviews
Maria:
"Last year, I bought seeds of the 'Atlant' pepper variety. Considering our poor soil, I got quite a bountiful harvest. The bushes start turning yellow as early as September, but the peppers are still hanging on. I definitely recommend this variety for planting both in the Urals and in black soils."
Valentina:
"I bought 'Winnie the Pooh' pepper seeds and was very pleased. The variety ripens quite early; the first peppers began to form while the seedlings were growing. I harvested my first crop in early July. The peppers are very large, sweet, and fleshy; I had plenty of them for the winter. I harvested them right up until October."
Nikolay:
"I'm an experienced gardener, so I'm very careful when choosing my vegetable varieties. This year, as always, I'll be planting 'Vityaz' peppers. It requires some care, constant loosening, watering, and creating warm growing conditions, but it's worth it. The fruits are large, sweet, and not bitter. I add the peppers to salads and casseroles; they're good in any form."
