Drying leaf edges on cucumbers: causes and treatment

Cucumbers

Cucumber leaves facilitate the formation of ovaries and perform a protective function. Therefore, a change in their color is the first warning sign. Even experienced gardeners often experience dry cucumber leaves: why, what to do, and common care mistakes. For example, improper watering or fertilizing. Diseases or pests can also cause damage.

Signs of drying out of seedlings and adult cucumber bushes

Alarm symptoms vary. Dry leaves can look different. But in general, there are several typical signs:

  1. Only the edges of cucumbers become drier. The center of the leaves may remain bright green and fresh, but the edges curl and dry out quickly. Treatment should be started immediately to prevent damage to the entire leaf blade.
  2. Pale tint. The entire leaf may be pale, or only the veins may remain green.
  3. Whitish spots. Over time, their number increases. Sometimes this spotting spreads to neighboring leaves. The color may initially be brownish-yellow, and then turn pale.

Often, only the older cucumber leaves suffer, and only then the young shoots dry out. First, the leaves begin to change color and curl; if left untreated, they eventually crumble. This should be avoided, as it protects the vegetables from excessive sun and pests.

Important!
The edges of cucumber leaves often dry out, starting from the bottom. This occurs with fungal infections. The shoots of the seedlings quickly become stale and die. It only takes 4-7 days for the bush to be completely damaged. A change in appearance is considered the first sign.

Why are cucumber leaves drying out?

Leaf wilting can be a natural process, and there's no cause for concern. The old leaves have simply fulfilled their purpose. New shoots are beginning to emerge, requiring proper care. This process is especially noticeable if the crop is grown indoors. In this case, simply removing excess leaves from the cucumbers is sufficient.

All other causes can be divided into two types: improper cucumber care and the appearance of diseases or pests. Unsuitable growing conditions only encourage the emergence of insects that damage foliage. Every detail matters, such as proper lighting or climate conditions.

Diseases and pests

In most cases, diseases affecting cucumber stems or leaves are fungal. They can be triggered by sudden temperature changes, high humidity, or environmental issues. Dry, yellow cucumber leaves then deteriorate due to fusarium wilt. It is characterized by the appearance of yellow spots that gradually increase in size over time. The root system suffers first, slowly rotting. At night, the foliage regains its turgor. If left untreated, white spots appear. The photos demonstrate how quickly foliage damage occurs. The plant then dies, with the entire bush becoming infected. Fusarium wilt is often caused by seeds, improperly prepared soil, or the remains of diseased inflorescences in the ground.

Downy mildew is commonly known as "false powdery mildew." It develops in conditions of excessive moisture, such as frequent rainfall. It is especially dangerous at low temperatures, when the fungi that cause the disease thrive. Brown spots appear on the upper leaves. A faint purple coating is visible underneath. The effects are usually easy to treat. Powdery mildew is easy to spot. This condition causes cucumbers to turn yellow in the open ground. Characteristic large spots appear. The coating is visible on the underside.

Pests are another factor that causes cucumbers to dry out. They drain the plant of all its nutrients, quickly damaging its structure. This causes spots to appear on the surface. Inspecting the plants can help identify the pathogen. For example, spider mites are easy to spot by the webbing on the underside of the foliage.

The following pests often appear in cucumber beds:

  • spider mite;
  • nematodes;
  • aphid;
  • mealybugs;
  • scale insects.

The first thing to react is the leaves on the emerging cucumber plants. They may crumble. In such cases, it's necessary to treat them with a special preparation or adjust the care of the seedlings.

Improper care

Chlorophyll formation requires adequate light. The superior ovary is particularly susceptible to UV deficiency. Avoid allowing the leaves of cucumbers to shade from adjacent beds.

This type of vegetable requires constant moisture. It's important to water it frequently, but in small amounts. On particularly hot days, a large amount of moisture evaporates. The root system receives almost no water, so watering should be done at least twice a day.

Important!
Water for irrigation is usually taken from wells or boreholes. The optimal temperature is considered to be just above 22 degrees Celsius. If it's colder, the water can be stored in barrels to warm it up.

The amount of water is constantly adjusted based on changing weather conditions. The soil should always remain slightly moist at a depth of 8-12 centimeters. Young cucumber leaves dry out in a special greenhouse if the recommended watering schedule is not followed. One bucket per square meter every couple of days is sufficient. Proper watering is also important if the lower cucumber leaves have turned slightly yellow. If the bed in the greenhouse is too wet and loose, watering should be stopped. Sprinkling the surface with sand or ash is recommended. Increasing the watering schedule should help. If this doesn't happen, there is another problem.

Why else do cucumber stems dry out?

  1. The seedlings have dried stems and edges due to sunburn. This is the result of improper watering. Surface irrigation results in too much water in just one area. Under the scorching sun, the cucumbers quickly dry out. The solution is morning and evening watering.
  2. Nutrient deficiencies often cause yellowing or dry roots in cucumbers. If the edges are noticeably dry, there's likely a magnesium or potassium deficiency. Upper leaves may change color if there's a copper deficiency. When growing hydroponically, it's important to pay attention to feeding and fertilizing the plants.
  3. Damaged root systems cause stems and leaves to dry out. Proper weeding is essential.

All products must be applied in the correct dosage to avoid causing chemical burns on the edges. If the bed has been mechanically damaged, generous fertilization is recommended, for example, with a bread infusion. However, choosing the right planting location and following the proper care guidelines is crucial.

What to do if leaves are drying out

If young cucumber leaves are drying out in a greenhouse, you need to reconsider your care system. Ensure sufficient light and space between beds. Special soil is also required. The soil used for open ground is not suitable for greenhouse plants. It needs a higher content of peat, wood components, and urea. Hydroponics is also beneficial. This system involves growing each seedling in a separate container. The stems should not touch the soil surface. To prevent cucumbers from spoiling at the edges, it is beneficial to feed them with potassium. Potassium is found in sufficient quantities in wood infusion.

Already damaged growths should be removed immediately. They are incapable of photosynthesis, but they continue to draw nutrients from the growing bed. Maintaining the water balance is also important, as the roots will begin to rot if overwatered. The soil should not be dry, but slightly damp. Therefore, monitor the air quality in the greenhouse. When it's dry, the cucumbers' edges dry out first, followed by the root system and fruit.

How to treat diseased and infected cucumber bushes

Seedlings can be treated by adding nitrogen compounds to the soil. This ensures good flowering. Urea is also a useful fertilizer. All this should be done in moderation to avoid poisoning. If this occurs, gardeners recommend Bordeaux mixture. Other useful fertilizers include "Acrobat" and "Bravo." Popular fertilizers include:

  1. NPK complexes or a mixture of superphosphate, potassium sulfate and ammonium nitrate; such substances must be diluted with water in a 1:1 ratio.
  2. If the plant lacks calcium, one of the available options is onion infusion.
  3. Ordinary liquid manure is considered a cheap replacement for nitrogen fertilizers in case of nitrogen deficiency.
  4. A universal remedy is comfrey tincture.

Plants need to be fed every 14 days. Nitrogen-rich fertilizers are needed to promote growth. Potassium-rich fertilizers will ensure good fruiting. Dry tips should be removed to prevent them from drawing moisture.

Folk remedies

Water the foliage with a bread infusion every 10 days. A few drops of iodine can be added. To prepare this solution, soak the bread in water for several hours. Once the plant has dried, spray the upper area with the solution. Natural remedies are helpful initially, but later, chemicals become necessary.

Folk remedies include preparing a mixture of laundry soap and ash. About 2 cups of ash are mixed with grated detergent. The mixture is then left to steep for a couple of hours. The foliage is then treated. Infusions based on garlic, celandine, or a combination of potassium permanganate and chalk are also used.

Special means

The ideal combination is ash and medicinal substances. Solutions like "EMM-1" and "Baikal" are popular for greenhouses. neutralize pests, the following insecticides are used:

  1. Agravertin.
  2. Mospilan.
  3. Biotlin.
  4. Fitoverm.

Some gardeners opt for chemical greenhouse pesticides, such as "Climate" and "Fass." However, such treatments should be carried out at least a couple of weeks before harvest. After that, only natural remedies are allowed.

Prevention

To prevent leaf damage and yellowing, proper crop rotation is essential. All seeds are treated before planting, and the soil is disinfected with special fungicides. You can ensure the quality of your seedlings in advance by choosing the right planting location. It should be shaded to prevent burns along the edges of the plant. Space between plants at least a meter apart. Diseased stems are removed immediately, as fungal infections damage healthy areas. It is recommended to grow cucumbers vertically. Proper watering and regular fertilizing reduce the risk of yellowing leaves. Most varieties are resistant to damage.

By following the correct care technology, you can prevent the appearance of yellow leavesBut if this happens, you need to change your care plan. Damaged shoots should also be removed. Watering should be limited to twice a day (not in direct sunlight), and fertilizer should contain a high amount of potassium.
