Spathiphyllum: home care and replanting

Flowers

Spathiphyllum, or as they say, "women's happiness," will rid its owner of loneliness. Legend has it that this plant helps unmarried girls find their destiny, and married women improve their relationships with their husbands. And for those who desperately want a child, their dream will come true. Naturally, spathiphyllum requires loving and careful care, and when it blooms, your cherished wish will surely come true.

What does this magical creation look like? The distinctive feature of the peace lily is that it has no stem, and its oval leaves grow straight out of the ground. If you see a small spadix on a long stem, it means your "woman's happiness" will soon bloom. With proper care, an unusual white flower will soon appear.

What to do after purchasing a spathiphyllum?

What to do after purchasing a spathiphyllum?

After purchasing a plant, especially from a store, don't rush to repot it. Give it at least three weeks to adapt to the current conditions.

Note!
After all, the purchase process changes the temperature and lighting conditions. If the plant was purchased in a store, it's best to repot it after a month.

How to properly care for your "female happiness"? What temperature conditions should you maintain? You'll also learn about common problems, pests, and much more in this article.

Location and lighting

The best location for "women's happiness" is a southeast window, and the flower will also thrive in east, west, and north-facing windows. Please note that direct sunlight can be harmful to the plant.

During the summer, shade is recommended. During the winter, the plant enters a dormant period, so additional lighting is not required.

Temperature

Spathiphyllum is a rather delicate and heat-loving houseplant. For a comfortable home, it needs a temperature of at least 18°C, preferably 22-23°C. It can also tolerate heat if it's adequately watered.

Important!
Protect this cute creature from drafts and cold, and also avoid moving the spathiphyllum from place to place, it does not like frequent changes of location.
Temperature

Air humidity

Since the spathiphyllum is native to the tropics, it is accustomed to high levels of humidity. Humidity is especially important during the winter, when the heating season begins and indoor humidity drops to 10-20%.

To increase air humidity it is recommended:

  • Spray the peace lily leaves with water. In summer, spray once every two days; in winter, spray twice daily. Be sure not to let water get on the flowers, as this may cause brown spots.
  • Small containers with water should be placed near the plant: jars, glasses, an aquarium, indoor decorative fountains, etc.
  • Place a layer of expanded clay in the wide tray of “women’s happiness”, then place the pot with the plant on top and pour water into the tray so that it does not touch the bottom of the pot;
  • You can use special electrical devices to increase air humidity.

Watering

For the best development of spathiphyllum, it's necessary to create comfortable conditions with regular watering, especially in spring and summer. Water from above, using room temperature water, preferably left to stand for 24 hours.

After half an hour, drain the excess water from the tray. If the leaves of the "Female Happiness" plant droop, spray and water it immediately. This should be done weekly. Also, make sure dust doesn't accumulate on the plant's leaves.

Watering

Top dressing and fertilization

To ensure the peace lily thrives, it requires proper care and timely feeding. Fertilizing should begin immediately upon planting, using a mixture of nutrients found in the soil: leaf mold, peat, composted manure, and sand.

Mineral fertilizers must contain such chemicals as potassium, phosphorus, and nitrogen. Micro- and macronutrients such as iron, manganese, and copper are also essential.

Top dressing and fertilization

To mineralize plants, you can use fertilizers in tablet form, which have the required composition and are very convenient for use.

Most gardeners recommend using liquid concentrated products. They're easy to use, and one capful per liter of water is sufficient. These products are effective during the flowering period of the "women's happiness" plant, as it blooms more profusely and lasts longer.

Note!
The following mineral preparations are excellent for spathiphyllum: “Azalea”, “Flower”, and also “Agricola” - a granulated composition for feeding flowering plants.

Before and after fertilizing, it is worth watering the “women’s happiness” generously with warm water.

In addition to mineral fertilizers, it's a good idea to use organic fertilizers. Cow manure is a popular choice. By alternating fertilizers, the spathiphyllum will thrive and bloom profusely.

Transfer

By the time your "feminine joy" needs repotting, the root system often takes up all the space in the flowerpot. However, if your favorite plant hasn't finished blooming yet, don't disturb it; wait until it does. The best time to repot is spring.

Transfer

If you purchased a spathiphyllum in a store, then repotting should be done 2-3 weeks after purchase.

It's best to repot into a spacious pot, then move it up one size. Repotting should be done with extreme caution, as the root system is very fragile and can be damaged. Most gardeners recommend using the transshipment method, which is safer for the spathiphyllum's roots. Remove only a small amount of soil, and if all the roots are intact, you can safely repot the plant. To do this:

  • water the plant lightly;
  • Using a garden shovel, carefully separate the soil and root system from the sides of the pot;
  • carefully remove excess soil and drainage from the root system;
  • Remove old and dried leaves from the base of the spathiphyllum.

You can do two things at once: replant a houseplant and propagate it at the same time by cutting off young shoots.

Fill the new pot with soil and place drainage material at the bottom. Suitable drainage materials include large pebbles, pieces of brick, or expanded clay. Carefully smooth out the spathiphyllum's roots before covering them with soil.

Note!
What kind of soil is best for repotting a "woman's happiness" plant? Considering that this flower is a member of the Araceae family, the substrate is appropriate for them. As mentioned earlier, the spathiphyllum is a tropical plant, so loose, light soil is ideal.

If you have the opportunity to prepare soil for your indoor pet, you should use the following ingredients:

  • parts of turf;
  • part of the leaf soil;
  • part of peat;
  • part of coarse sand;
  • ½ part charcoal, brick chips or large pebbles.

After repotting, water the plant immediately. Once the soil has settled slightly, add more soil on top. Spray the peace lily with a spray bottle to help it feel more comfortable after repotting.

How to care for a transplanted spathiphyllum in the first days

For the first 2-4 weeks, the plant will require increased humidity. To help it acclimate, create a mini greenhouse for the spathiphyllum. To do this, wrap the transplanted plant in a plastic bag and water and ventilate it for 2 weeks.

Reproduction of Spathiphyllum

Spathiphyllum is such an easy-to-care-for flower that even propagation is effortless. There are three propagation methods:

  • propagation by seeds.

This method is for patient gardeners. It's a rather labor-intensive process. The problem is that most seeds may fail to germinate, and if stored for a long time, they may not germinate at all. It's recommended to plant the seeds immediately after collection.

Reproduction of Spathiphyllum

If your "feminine joy" isn't growing well, it could be due to too much moisture and light. To treat this, relocate the plant.

If the leaves of your houseplant dry out and spots form on the leaf, this means the plant is overwatered.

If “women’s happiness” doesn’t bloom, it means it needs to be fed.
If the leaves of the spathiphyllum begin to stretch out, become smaller and deformed, this means that the plant does not have enough light.

Problems in growing

Spathiphyllum is a relatively easy-to-care-for plant, but to ensure abundant flowering and growth, it requires careful care. The main problems when growing it are: insufficient or too much light, overwatering, and excessive fertilization, which also negatively impact the plant.

Problems in growing

How long does spathiphyllum bloom indoors?

The main flowering period is spring and summer, but with proper care, it can also bloom in winter. The plant can bloom for anywhere from one month to six months.

Note!
The appearance of new buds is influenced by several factors: plant fertilization, the required temperature regime from 23 to 25°C, but the main one is watering and spraying the surface of the leaves.
