When developing the Galbena Nou grape, breeders took into account all the needs of both winegrowers and ordinary gardeners. High yields, low maintenance, early ripening, and excellent taste—all these qualities have won the hearts of even the most discerning white grape lovers.
General characteristics
The Moldovan-bred grape "Frumoasa Albă" and the pride of the I. V. Michurin Institute, "Korinka Russkaya," were used in the development of this variety. This unique variety, combining its positive characteristics, has not yet been included in the state register of breeding achievements, but is nevertheless widely grown among winegrowers under the names "Zolotinka" or "Novy Zheltyol."
Description of the plant
"Zolotinka" bushes are tall. With proper care, the vines can reach 3 meters in length. The vines mature almost 100% of the way up. A distinctive feature of this variety is the highly flexible shoots, both young and mature. Therefore, the plant is resistant even to strong, gusty winds. The light green leaves are small and rounded. The overall appearance of the bush resembles an ornamental plant. This tree is suitable for landscaping arbors or canopies.
"New Yellow" is an early-ripening variety. It takes an average of 125 days from bud break to full ripeness. The flowers are bisexual, meaning pollination occurs independently of other varieties. The bush produces excellent fruit in a single planting, making it very attractive to gardeners with small plots.
The variety's frost resistance is above average. The grape tree can withstand temperatures down to -25 degrees Celsius without shelter. It is also resistant to sudden temperature fluctuations. These qualities make Galbena Nou suitable for cultivation in all regions of the country and neighboring countries.
Fruit clusters are usually perfectly conical in shape, though sometimes branched. Each cluster averages 500-700 grams in weight, with some specimens reaching 1.5 kg.
The clusters are large and cone-shaped, weighing between 400 and 700 grams, or up to 1.5 kg with proper cultivation. The berries are not densely packed, giving the clusters a loose appearance.
Features of berries and their use
Berry weight can vary depending on care and weather conditions. The average berry weighs between 6 and 9 grams. The fruit is typically round, rarely oval. The skin of unripe berries is green. As they ripen, they acquire a golden hue. The flavor is excellent. Galbena Nou is among the top five best-tasting white grape varieties. The berries have a balanced flavor with a high sugar content and a pleasant muscat aftertaste. The pulp is firm, juicy, and seedless.
The fruits are versatile. They can be eaten fresh as a dessert, or used to make juices and compotes. Muscat berries make rich homemade wines. The dense structure of the grapes makes them commercially viable. The bunches do not fall apart and retain their fresh appearance during transport.
Productivity
The variety is early maturing, with the first "signal" fruits appearing as early as the second year of planting. Yields are estimated to be average, but consistent year after year. One square meter can yield 5-6 kilograms of berries.
Advantages and disadvantages
According to winegrowers, the Galbena Nou variety is considered practically ideal. No significant shortcomings have been noted during its cultivation. Among its advantages are the following:
- easy to care for;
- strong and sturdy shoots are resistant to winds;
- bears fruit well regardless of the weather;
- quickly adapts to various climatic conditions;
- the first harvest is produced in the second year;
- the fruits have a marketable appearance and excellent taste;
- universal in application;
- resistant to grape diseases;
- frost-resistant;
- Due to its intensive growth, it can be used as an ornamental plant.
Subtleties of agricultural technology
Caring for Galbena Nou grapes is easy. All the necessary agricultural techniques are accessible to every gardener; you just need to consider some of the variety's characteristics.
Landing
Grapevines can be grown by planting seedlings or by cuttings. When using cuttings, planting is best done in the fall, while seedlings, on the other hand, take root better in the spring.
Grape vines prefer humus-rich soil. They thrive on hillsides and rocky areas. The groundwater level should not exceed 2.5 meters from the soil surface.
Planting holes are prepared in advance to ensure the soil settles properly. Otherwise, root cavities are highly likely to form, leading to the death of the plant.
Before planting, consider which side the bushes will be supported on. When planting, the seedlings should be positioned at an angle toward this side. This will allow the vines to naturally grow toward the support, making tying them up easier.
Watering
The deep root system allows grapes to easily withstand drought. However, timely irrigation can produce larger berries and strengthen the plant's immunity. Irrigation rates vary depending on the soil composition. Approximate water consumption is shown in the table:

Pruning and shaping the bush
This variety is characterized by vigorous green growth. Particular attention must be paid to shaping the grape tree. Pruning is performed annually. The stages of shaping the bush are presented in the table:
|
Completion date of the work |
Name of works |
|
May 1-10 immediately after the buds open |
Remove root suckers by cutting them back to the soil surface. Be sure to remove any shoots that duplicate fruiting branches, as well as underdeveloped branches that show signs of disease. |
|
June |
Pinch the tops of vigorous shoots, shortening them by 5-10 cm. Carry out thinning by freeing the bush from excess clusters. |
|
August 20-30
|
Prune the vines. To do this, remove the tops of all shoots with 6-8 upper leaves. |
|
October 1-10 |
After the sap flow has finished and the grapes have entered a dormant state, the vines are pruned, leaving 7-8 buds on each shoot.

Diseases and pests
The variety's strong immunity allows for an environmentally friendly harvest, without the use of chemicals. The bushes are virtually immune to mildew and rot. Rare cases of powdery mildew have been observed under unfavorable conditions.
Sweet berries and thin skins attract wasps. An insect attack can completely destroy the crop. There are several effective ways to solve this problem:
- set up bait traps in the vineyard;
- hide each bunch in special mesh bags;
- make a false nest (wasps do not settle where the area is occupied).
Preparing for winter
"New Yellow" is a frost-resistant white grape variety. However, it's important to remember that only fully ripened vines and healthy plants can tolerate low temperatures well. Therefore, frost resistance depends on how the grapes were cared for during the growing season. To avoid weakening the plant, it's important to maintain an optimal load on the vine.
With proper care, grapes in temperate climates don't require covering. In regions with little snow and frosty winters, it's best to be on the safe side and cover the vines. Fallen pine needles or any non-woven material can be used for this.
"Galbena Nou" is known among winegrowers as a "workhorse." This attractive, easy-to-care-for, early-ripening grape will grace any garden plot and delight with a harvest of sweet berries.
Reviews
Svetlana Stepanovna, Leningrad Region
"Zolotinka" has been growing on my plot for six years now. I bought the seedling at the market from an experienced grape grower. He provides planting and care instructions with each seedling. I tried to follow all the recommendations. The main ones are watering through a drainage pipe and shaping the bush so that there are no more than 40 buds. As a result, the harvest is rewarding, even in our cloudy climate.

An excellent variety. It grows well and produces annual crops. The vines are very vigorous and strong, with moderately loose clusters. The grapes have a sweet, muscat-like flavor. The berries are firm but not crunchy. Vineyard care is minimal. We water only during prolonged hot and dry periods. I use organic fertilizer in early spring and fall. I recommend this variety for growing in your garden. It's easy to maintain, and the taste is no worse than store-bought grapes.
