Grape varieties

Hybrids created by the talented Ukrainian breeder Nikolai Petrovich Vishnevetsky are popular among winegrowers. Over the years of painstaking work, he developed many grape varieties, all of which thrive in Ukraine's unstable climate. His goal was to produce a high-yielding hybrid with a long shelf life.

Brief information

grape photo

Hybrid varieties developed by a folk breeder demonstrate excellent results in Ukraine and southern Russia. Their main advantage is their excellent adaptability to all weather conditions.

Over the years, Vishnevetsky developed productive hybrid grape varieties with ultra-early, early, and mid-early ripening periods. Each hybrid has a distinctive flavor. A common advantage is resistance to fungal infections. The berries are rarely attacked by insects. The bunches withstand long transportation well and have a long shelf life.

Description of Vishnevetsky hybrids

N. P. Vishnevetsky's breeding work was inspired by the fact that grape varieties in his region had low yields. He used over 20 hybrid grape varieties in his work. Satisfying his family's needs for grapes was his initial goal. As a result, many grape lovers have gained the opportunity to grow hybrids.

Azora

Azorean grapes

A cross between two grape varieties, Laura and Nadezhda. This mid-early variety ripens in 130 days. The bushes are vigorous with bisexual flowers. When ripe, the berries are light green and matte. The clusters are large, weighing just over 1,000 g. The flavor is impeccable, and the flesh is crisp and firm.

Advantages of Azora grapes:

  • vine resistance to diseases;
  • long-term storage;
  • not affected by rot.

Outrigger

A super-early hybrid, ripens in 100 days. Parents: Zvezdny, Kesha 1, and Rizamat. The largest clusters weigh up to 2,500 g. The fruits are large, attractive, fleshy, green-yellow with an amber hue. They are oblong-oval in shape: 3 cm long and 2.8 cm in diameter. The flavor is rich, with a hint of pear and a hint of muscat.

Hybrid characteristics:

  • resistant to gray mold;
  • the bunches are transportable and can be stored for a long time;
  • the vine shows good frost resistance, can withstand -24 °C;
  • there are no problems with pollination in rainy weather.

For your information!

The varietal characteristics (taste, aroma) of Valka can be lost when propagated by grafting; winegrowers prefer to obtain its seedlings using layering.

Valek was bred for cultivation in the northern regions of Ukraine, but it is now successfully adapted to various climates; the hybrid is highly adaptable to weather conditions. Pollination is high due to the presence of both male and female flowers on the bush.

Dashunya

The variety was derived from Rizamat, Kesha 1, and Kishmish Luchisty. It takes 115 days to harvest. The shoots bear only female flowers, so Dashunya grapes require pollinators. The vine is characterized by vigorous growth and good resistance to mildew and oidium.

Fruit characteristics:

  • do not crack;
  • not damaged by gray mold;
  • transportable;
  • weigh 10 g;
  • color dark pink;
  • balanced taste with notes of muscat.

Important!

During the flowering period, artificial pollination is carried out using a brush made of rabbit fur.

The hybrid produces a good yield. The clusters are conical and large. Individual grapes weigh 1,500 g. The yield is not harmed by wasps.

Wild Rose

This hybrid isn't particularly popular with winegrowers; its properties haven't yet been fully studied. The varieties used in this study were Demeter and Richelieu. The harvest ripens in 130-150 days, and the vines are of medium vigor. Wild Rose is resistant to fungal infections.

The clusters are loose and large. Ripe fruits reach impressive sizes, oblong, matte, and black. The clusters store and transport well without losing their marketable appearance.

Dolinsky Canteen

This Vishnevetsky grape has won the hearts of many lovers. The hybrid's popularity is deserved, and its characteristics are compelling:

  • frost resistance (-23 °C);
  • no peas;
  • no crop losses from grey mould;
  • The berries are transported without losing their marketable appearance and can be stored for a long time.

Ripe fruits are light green. The firm flesh is moderately juicy. The flavor is balanced. The clusters are small, weighing 600 g. The harvest ripens over a period of 125 days. Dolinsky Stolovy owes its qualities to its parent varieties: Kesha-1 and Arkadia.

Elizabeth

An early maturing hybrid form (100 days), derived from 3 varieties:

  • Demeter;
  • Outrigger;
  • Richelieu.

Elizabeth is characterized by timely ripening of the vines and a strong immune system. The hybrid form typically produces huge, cone-shaped bunches up to 35 cm long, weighing 1,000-1,500 g on young vines and up to 3,000 g on 4-5-year-old vines.

The berries are large, yellow-green, and round, weighing 7 to 12 grams on average. The flesh is soft, the seeds are small, and the skin is barely noticeable. The flavor is delicate and harmonious, with a high sugar content. The berries do not crack even in high humidity. It is recommended to protect the bunches from wasps with nets.

Goldenrod

The berries are beautiful, large, burgundy-pink, gathered in loose clusters weighing approximately 800 g. Zolotushka is an early variety, ripening in 130 days. Characteristics:

  • high percentage of sugars;
  • the taste is good;
  • the flesh is crisp and dense;
  • frost resistance around -21 °C;
  • It is effective against fungal infections.

In working on Zolotushka, the breeder used: Kishmish Luchisty, Kesha 1, Rizamat.

Muscat Posada

Muscat grapes

A white table variety, derived from the parent varieties Galbena Nou, Kesha 1, Cherry, and Rizamat. The vine is vigorous and ripens in 125 days. The flowers are bisexual. The hybrid can tolerate temperatures as low as -23°C without shelter.

Disease resistance (mildew and powdery mildew) is rated at 2.5 and 3 points, respectively. With good agricultural practices, yields are high, with bunches weighing up to 1.5 kg.

Characteristics of the berry:

  • weight 12 g;
  • oval shape;
  • the pulp has a dense structure, a lot of juice, and is crispy;
  • The taste has notes of muscat.

A gift for Irina

A vigorous hybrid with elongated, dark-red, delicious berries, developed by Vishnevetsky using the Elegant and Kesha grape varieties. This is a table variety, the fruit should be eaten fresh.

Irina's Gift is a mid-early variety in terms of ripening speed. Harvesting begins after 125-130 days. In temperate climates, the bunches ripen by mid-August.

Characteristics of grapes:

  • high rate of shoot maturation;
  • frost resistance level -23°C;
  • average resistance to mildew and oidium;
  • the yield is decent;
  • bunch weight 1-1.5 kg;
  • the clusters are dense;
  • fruits are oval;
  • the skin is thin, pink or dark red;
  • the pulp is sweet and sour, fleshy;
  • The fruits are not susceptible to gray mold.

According to winegrowers, Irina's Gift produces a moderate number of side shoots, reducing the time spent on "green work." The hybrid is self-pollinating, with no problems with fruit set. Another advantage is the lack of pea-like growth.

Promin

pass the grapes

This mid-season variety was created by crossing Kishmish Luchisty with Kesha-1. The vine is vigorous and has bisexual flowers. Bunches weigh 700-800 g; ripe fruits are fragrant, dark red, and large. The flesh is firm.

Advantages of the Promin hybrid:

  • resistance to fungal infections;
  • frost resistance -23 °C.

The Chervona Troyanda hybrid ripens in early August, between the 10th and 15th, and takes 130 days to mature. Ripe fruits are pink with a slight raspberry hue, weighing between 12 and 16 grams.

The fairly dense flesh is covered with a thin skin, the flavor is light and moderately sweet (15-25% sugar). The berry can contain up to six seeds. The clusters are large, conical, and loose, weighing up to 2,000 g.

Reference!

It winters well at -15 °C; at lower winter temperatures the vine needs to be covered.

Hybrid characteristics:

  • frost resistance – 24 °C;
  • resistance to mildew from 2.5 to 3 points;
  • resistance to powdery mildew from 2 to 2.5 points.

The hybrid does not need pollinators; it has both female and male flowers.

Black cherry

black grape

A relatively new variety developed by Vishnevetsky in 2005. The following varieties participated in the selection: Valek, Nadezhda AZOS, Kuban, and Richelieu. This ultra-early hybrid (105 days) blooms in early June, and the flowers are bisexual. The clusters are large, long, and loose, weighing from 500 to 1000 g.

For your information!

In autumn, black cherries bear fruit on side shoots. The clusters are smaller, and the berries ripen fully.

The berries are black with a pleasant cherry or sweet cherry flavor, measuring 22 x 30 mm. The flesh is fleshy, very sweet, and firm, with rudimentary seeds. The harvest is in mid-July. Overripe berries acquire a wine-like flavor. Black cherries are currently being studied; preliminary characteristics include:

  • disease resistance is present;
  • the bunches do not suffer from gray mold;
  • the berries do not fall apart or crack;
  • There is no precise information about frost resistance.

Black Panther

Panther grapes

A table grape. The skin is dense, dark purple, and does not crack when exposed to excess moisture. Sugar content is high. The bunches are loose, long (47 cm), weighing 700-1200 g, rarely 1500 g, and the vines are vigorous. Black Panther is resistant to fungal infections and rarely suffers from gray mold.

Reference!

A distinctive feature of Black Panther is the inflorescences on the stepsons of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd orders.

Fruit characteristics:

  • color dark purple;
  • conical-oval shape;
  • dimensions 25*35 mm;
  • weight up to 15 g;

Reviews

Andrey, Poltava region

I built a single-plane trellis for Valka, and this year it had signal fruiting. With nine clusters, the largest bunch weighed 1.3 kg. It ripens early, with a pear-like flavor with a slight Muscat note. The Muscat note predominates in overripe berries.

Vika, Voronezh region

At my dacha, I grow two varieties from Vishnevetsky: Chervona Troyanda and Smaragd. I prefer Chervona Troyanda in terms of berry quality; its berries are larger. Smaragd is noted for its resistance to fungal infection. Chervona Troyanda is advertised as an early ripening variety, but in my experience it's ripened only mid-early.

Evgeniya, Rostov region

Dashunya is a fantastic Muscat. The fruit is fleshy and juicy, and doesn't suffer from wasps, so I don't use netting. The flesh is sweet. I've done two preventative treatments this season, and no diseases have been observed. The overloaded bushes had pea-shaped fruit.

Vladimir, Stavropol Krai

Irina's Gift has been disappointing for the second year. The clusters are small. The summer was rainy, and we had to fight anthracnose. There's also Sirenevyi Tuman (Lilac Tuman) from Vishnevetsky. If you don't take preventative measures, it can develop gray mold due to damp weather. A small percentage of the berries in the cluster crack.

Conclusion

Every hybrid variety from N. P. Vishnevetsky is distinguished by its tolerance to environmental factors and pathogens. The bunches have a long shelf life and withstand transportation well. Winegrowers who grow grapes for the market value these qualities.
