Chamaedorea - home care (photo)

Flowers

Chamaedorea is a bamboo palm native to Mexico and the Americas. The photo below shows beautiful specimens. Caring for it at home is easy.

Varieties of Hamedorea

Several varieties of Chamaedorea can be grown indoors. Therefore, before purchasing, it's important to understand the characteristics of each species and choose the most suitable one.

Varieties:

  1. Graceful. Also known as Neantha magnifica, this plant reaches 2 meters in height and blooms three years after planting. Its yellow flowers are particularly captivating. They are not only attractive but also have a pleasant fragrance.
  2. Ernest-Augusta. An interesting species with heart-shaped leaves. This plant can decorate any home.
  3. A single-color palm. A low-growing palm that fits perfectly in a greenhouse or apartment. Its thin leaves resemble feathers.

These are the main varieties of Chamaedorea found indoors. They are small and won't take up much space.

Where to put a palm tree

The palm bushes don't do well in shade or direct sunlight. A location with moderate light is best. This determines the palm's appearance.

Advice!
In summer, the room needs to be regularly ventilated. It's best to place the bush on a balcony.

Temperature

Chamaedorea grows well at room temperature. The optimal temperature in summer is 16-20°C, and in winter, 12-15°C.

Watering

Soil moisture must be carefully managed. Don't allow the palm's soil to dry out, but overwatering it is also undesirable. Diseases and insects that can cause significant damage thrive in damp soil. Watering is necessary more frequently in summer than in winter.

Air humidity

Chamaedorea requires special care at home. To ensure beautiful specimens like those pictured, pay special attention to air humidity. If it's dry, dark spots may appear on the leaves. Spider mites will also appear. To prevent this, mist the leaves daily.

Container and soil

Since palm roots grow deep, a deep container is required for growing it. The soil should be loose. Gardeners recommend using a nutritious, slightly acidic soil. A special palm soil is ideal. However, it will need to be diluted with ash, coconut fiber, or moss.

Fertilizers

For normal growth, plants require additional nutrition. Fertilizing is recommended once every two weeks. During winter, fertilizer can be applied once a month.

Trimming

All gardeners should know how to propagate and prune. These procedures are important and must be performed promptly. Pruning is performed when leaves begin to dry out. Sterilized tools must be prepared, and the damaged areas must be sprinkled with charcoal.

Transfer

Repotting should be done in the spring. The main factor indicating the need for this procedure is the expansion of the root system. The roots become uncomfortable in the container, and the palm is unable to develop further.

Please note!
Young seedlings need to be replanted once a year, mature ones – once every 2 years.

Transplanting chamedorea and caring for it at home is not difficult.

To ensure that plants develop as shown in the photo, the procedure is carried out according to the following scheme:

  • the plant in the old pot is placed on its side;
  • roll the container from side to side;
  • carefully remove the plant from the container;
  • the soil is removed from the root part;
  • Place the palm tree in a new container with soil.

Handling the root section requires care. One wrong move can kill the plant. After this procedure, the container containing the seedling should be moved to a shaded area for three days. Watering should be avoided during this time.

Reproduction

Growing chamaedorea at home is easy. The photo shows how to care for and propagate it.

There are 3 methods of reproduction:

  • seeds;
  • kids;
  • by dividing the bush.

Propagation by seeds

This method is used extremely rarely. This is due to the low germination rate of palm seeds. Furthermore, they have strict storage requirements.

seeds

The procedure is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. The seeds must be soaked in water for 100 hours.
  2. Complex fertilizer should be added to the liquid.
  3. Pour the substrate into the prepared pots and place 2 seeds in each.
  4. Then you need to cover the containers with polyethylene.
  5. Watering should be done once every 2 days, ventilation – daily.

The first shoots will appear in 3-6 months. After this, remove the film and move the containers to the greenhouse. The seedlings will grow there for another 2 months.

Reproduction by babies

This method is used much more often than seed propagation. Young palms must be separated. This procedure should be performed in the spring, during scheduled replanting.

Dividing the bush

This method is used when several plants are growing in a single container. The procedure is performed in the spring. To do this, remove the root ball from the container and remove the soil. After this, divide the plant into several smaller ones, each planted in its own pot.

Important!
The work must be performed with disinfected tools.

Diseases

Even proper care of the Chamaedorea at home won't protect the palm from disease. The photos show the main ailments. The most dangerous diseases are:

  • gray mold;
  • spotting.

If the first signs of disease appear, the palms need to be saved. To do this, reduce watering, prune away damaged areas, and treat them with a fungicide. Afterwards, the seedlings should be replanted in a new container.

Gardeners often notice that the tips of their Chamaedorea leaves are drying out; the problem can be seen in the photo. Although indoor care is simple, some difficulties do arise. If the leaves are drying out, it means the palm is growing in an unfavorable environment. Most likely, the air in the room is dry and the soil isn't moist enough.

The Chamaedorea can be a beautiful addition to any home. With proper care and timely maintenance, the palm will always be healthy and attractive.
