Godetia: growing from seeds at home

Godetia

Godetia: growing from seeds at homeGodetia is a herbaceous annual that requires little care. Its beauty resembles an elegant plant, an attractive addition to any garden. Godetia is native to California, but thrives in temperate or warm climates in Russia, delighting with its blooms.

There are approximately 20 known species of Godetia. The plant's stem can reach 60 cm in height. The leaves are entire and pointed, and the flowers range from 3 to 10 cm in diameter. Godetia is bell-shaped, and the inflorescence can be either smooth or double. The plant's diverse shades are striking—crimson, violet, burgundy, and scarlet.

Godetia can only be grown from seeds. This is its only method of propagation, but it's not problematic. They can be planted in two ways: in open ground or as seedlings. Godetia is planted in the ground starting in mid-April.

Regardless of the planting method chosen, the seeds should be soaked in a light pink solution of potassium permanganate for half an hour before planting. This will help protect the plant from various diseases. The soil for planting should be neutral loam. The planting area should be sunny and well-ventilated. The soil should be prepared in advance: dug, leveled, and fertilized. The best fertilizer for godetia is humus—5 kg per square meter of soil.

I plant the seeds at a depth of about 0.7 cm, leaving 20 cm between plants. It's a good idea to cover the beds with plastic film. This will speed up germination.

Godetia: cultivation

The main advantage of the non-seedling method is that the seedlings are very fragile and often get damaged during transplantation.

Godetia: Growing from seeds indoors begins in the last week of March and continues through the first week of April. Use containers with a nutrient-rich substrate. Mix the seeds with sand and scatter them, covering them with a thin layer of soil, then cover with plastic wrap to speed germination. The containers should be regularly ventilated and watered periodically. The seedlings will begin to sprout in about 1.5 weeks. After germination, remove the plastic wrap and transplant. Three plants per pot are transplanted, then the same number is planted in a hole in the ground. Transplanting from indoors is best done in late May and early June. Time of day: early morning or evening after the sun sets.
