Reproduction

The easiest way to propagate avens is by dividing the bushes—it takes root immediately and blooms in its first year, whereas those sown from seed will only delight you with their delicate flowers in the second year. In the spring, simply dig up the bush, prepare a hole, water it well, divide the bush with a sharp knife, and plant. But remember—if you're dividing in the fall, you can only divide the bush after the flowering process has completely faded.

It's also easy to plant from seeds. In the spring (early, in March), simply sow it in boxes indoors or in a greenhouse, and when the weather warms up, transfer the seedlings to the ground. If it's time to replant and the weather isn't yet very warm, you can cover the plants with bottles, agrofibre, or use plastic sheeting. Once the temperature rises, remove the covering. Incidentally, it sheds its flowers frequently in the summer, only to bloom again later. To prolong its delicate blooms, try removing any faded or dried flowers; this gives it renewed vigor.

Types of Geum

river avens

There is a tall avens plant, it is wonderful for making bouquets and looks good in a vase at home.
There is a river one, which decorates the banks of all kinds of bodies of water.
There is Geum triflorum, it is used as a natural carpet.
St. Benedict's herb—that's the name given to the common avens, also known as the avens tree. Its root is used in soups and ale-making, and is used to treat colds, bee stings, and upset stomachs. Australians make it into a tea, and traditional medicine uses it for rheumatism, fever, and gout.

In the fall, cut off all the above-ground parts of the avens, cover it with spruce branches, and it will overwinter wonderfully, and in the spring it will be almost the first to delight you with its bright blooms.
