Very tasty stewed cabbage with pork
Stewed cabbage with pork is a very popular dish prepared in many countries around the world, especially in the post-Soviet countries.
The main ingredients of this dish are meat and cabbage. Pork with a thin layer of fat is ideal for the meat. This meat makes the dish juicy, delicious, and filling. The quantities of ingredients in this recipe (with photos) can be slightly adjusted to suit your taste.
Ingredients:
- cabbage (without stalk) – 800 grams;
- pork – 400 grams;
- onion – 150 grams;
- carrots – 150 grams;
- tomato paste – 1 tbsp;
- tomato juice – 100 grams;
- granulated sugar - a pinch;
- table salt – to taste;
- ground black pepper – to taste;
- bay leaf – 1 piece;
- vegetable oil – 5 tablespoons;
- spices for meat – 1 teaspoon.
How to cook stewed cabbage with pork
Cut the pork, with some fat, into pieces approximately 3 x 3 cm in size and place in a deep frying pan or sauté pan. Fry over high heat without adding oil. If using dry meat, you can lightly grease the pan with sunflower oil.
Brown the meat on all sides. Dry-roasting over high heat seals in the meat, trapping all the juices inside, making it juicy and delicious.
Dice the onion, grate the carrots and add to the meat.
Fry everything together over medium heat until the vegetables are soft. It's important not to overcook them, otherwise they'll burn. Add more oil if needed.
Season with salt and pepper to taste. Also add meat seasonings.
Chop the cabbage, add salt (3 pinches is enough), and mash it. Transfer to a frying pan and fry over low heat for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent burning. Add a little sunflower oil.
After this, cover the pan with a lid, reduce the heat to low, and let it simmer for about half an hour. Remember to stir occasionally.
Then pour in tomato juice, add tomato paste, sugar, ground black pepper and bay leaf.
Simmer for about 10 more minutes, uncovered, to allow all the excess liquid to evaporate. Taste and add salt if needed.
The stewed cabbage with pork is ready. Best served hot. This stewed cabbage with meat can be served as a standalone dish or with a side of potatoes—either way is delicious and filling.
