Favorable days of snowy April 2025 for gardeners

Lunar sowing calendar for gardeners and vegetable growers for 2025

April 2025 turned out to be an interesting month. Snow that hadn't fallen during the winter is sweeping across not only the central part of the country, but also the southern regions. Of course, we have to pay for a mild winter without severe frosts. And for us, gardeners and vegetable growers, all that's left is to admire our seedlings on warm windowsills under bright, beautiful lamps.

Month by phases of the moon

In April 2025, the phases of the Moon will change in the following order:

DateMoon phaseRecommendations
April 1–4Waxing MoonSowing and planting above-ground crops (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, greens).
April 5First quarterA good day for transplanting and loosening the soil.
April 6–12Waxing MoonContinue planting above-ground crops.
April 13Full moonAvoid planting. Suitable for harvesting and canning.
April 14–20Waning MoonPlanting root crops, pruning trees and shrubs.
April 21Third quarterThinning, weeding, pest control.
April 22–26Waning MoonPlant care, fertilizers, disease control.
April 27New moonDo not plant. Clean, disinfect, and weed.
April 28–30Waxing MoonThe beginning of a new cycle – you can plant above-ground crops again.

New moon

The start of a new lunar month negatively impacts the vital functions of all plant life. Inflicted wounds take a long time to heal, plants have trouble establishing, and seeds germinate poorly. Planting, picking, and pruning are not recommended during this time.

Note!
During the new moon, it is better to avoid planting and replanting plants, and focus on preparing the soil and caring for the plants, as this is a period when plants lack energy for growth.

Waxing Moon

During the second quarter of the lunar month, the moon's energy stimulates active sap flow in plants, accelerating the healing process after grafting and pruning. This is the ideal period for planting, picking, and transplanting garden crops, as well as for the active growth of young plants.

Full moon

During the full moon, the moon's influence on plants is depressing, so it's best to avoid working with plants during this time. Instead, gardeners prepare the soil for planting, fertilize, till, cultivate, and tend to the garden, avoiding the energy of actively tending to the plants.

Waning Moon

During the final phase of the lunar cycle, the moon's energy is focused on the development of plant roots. During this time, roots grow actively, nutrient absorption improves, and tubers and bulbs accumulate. Root crops planted during the waning moon will store well and yield a bountiful harvest.

Tree pruning

In the fourth month, the ground across most of Russia clears of snow, the water drains from the ridges, and the fields dry out. For summer residents, the main spring work begins on their plots:

  • The area is cleared of the accumulated fall debris. Fallen leaves are placed in compost piles, and branches are burned in a fire or barrel;
  • Sanitary pruning of trees and shrubs is performed. Over the winter, some branches dry out or are damaged by frost and disease. The cut areas are covered with a thin layer of garden pitch;
Note!
After pruning each tree, treat the pruning shears and saw with an antiseptic solution. This prevents the development of fungal diseases in the garden.
  • conduct formative pruning Trees and shrubs. Over the summer, trees and shrubs produce many extra shoots. To ensure a harvest, thin out the crowns by pruning out excess or incorrectly growing branches. Additionally, adjust the stakes that support the bushes.
  • Tree grafting. After spring awakening, trees begin to actively flow sap. Branches grafted in April quickly take root and produce a harvest the following year;
  • Trees are sprayed with ferrous sulfate as a preventative measure against the spread of fungal diseases. Berry bushes are watered with hot water. These procedures are carried out before the flower buds open.
Spraying trees
  • Trees and shrubs are fertilized. Fertilizers are spread around the trunk;
  • Perennial berry crops are inspected, old, low-yielding bushes are discarded, and new, young ones are planted. Strawberry bushes are mulched and fertilized with organic and mineral fertilizers;
  • The covering material is removed from the grapevine. Return frosts are still possible in April, but the vines can withstand short-term drops in temperature without damage. Uncovered vines rot in the hot spring sun, and fungal diseases begin to develop on the branches;
  • Organic and mineral fertilizers are spread over the arable land, followed by plowing, cultivation, and cutting of the beds. The arable land is treated with Fitosporin or Trichodermin to prevent diseases;
  • planting seedlings of peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers in closed ground;
  • The beds are sown with green crops and protected from frost with a thick layer of mulch, film, or agrofibre;
  • in the flower garden, the covering is removed from the delicate rose bushes;
  • Based on last year's results, the flowerbed is inspected. Tuber crops are divided and replanted, and annuals are reseeded.
