When growing tomatoes, fertilizer is essential. Gardeners have a wide choice: mineral and biofertilizers, growth stimulants. Many recipes use pharmaceutical preparations, such as iodine, ammonia, and aspirin. Breadcrumbs are a good fertilizer for tomatoes.
On the benefits of crackers
For making a nutritious infusion, crackers made from any yeast bread (white or brown) are suitable. Yeast has a positive effect on plants. When used regularly, it stimulates root and aerial growth.
Gardeners who use dry bread infusion note its benefits for vegetable and flower crops:
- plants begin to actively grow already on the 3rd day after root feeding;
- vegetables can better withstand stress caused by worsening weather conditions (heat, cold, prolonged rain);
- Tomatoes' immunity and fruit taste improve, and their yield increases.

The Secret of Bread Fertilizer
Root feeding actively promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria in the soil, which absorb micronutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) from the soil and convert them into compounds more readily available to plants. This provides more intensive nutrition to vegetables.
Garlic, onions and potatoes do not like bread kvass.
Tomatoes are among those vegetable crops that respond well to yeast fertilizers. To achieve results, they are fertilized at least three times:
- during the formation of buds for the first time;
- the second time after 2 weeks (at the beginning of ovary formation);
- the third time in another 2-3 weeks.
Top dressing tomatoes with breadcrumbs
To increase tomato yield by 25% and improve the flavor of the fruit, use old bread. Here's how to use the starter:
- when applying root dressings, the effect of yeast is evident if the soil is warm;
- First, the main watering is carried out, then root feeding with infusion;
- the best time for root feeding is in the evening from 19:00 to 20:00;
- adding ash enhances the effect of the infusion.
How to prepare fertilizer
Gardeners fertilize tomatoes with an infusion made solely from dried bread, or use additional additives such as nettles and fresh cow manure. These additives increase the concentration of nutrients in the liquid.
Fertilizer from dry bread
To prepare 10 liters of nutrient solution, take a large plastic bucket and place 2 kg of stale bread in it. Use warm water (30°C) and fill it halfway up the bucket. You'll need a weight—a lid with a smaller diameter than the bucket. The breadcrumbs should be completely submerged in the water.
The infusion ferments for a week. On the seventh day, it is filtered. The resulting liquid volume is brought to 10 liters. The starter is then ready for use—you can water the seedlings and mature tomatoes. When fertilizing mature tomatoes, add a few drops of iodine to the starter.
Nettle croutons for tomatoes
Fill a bucket with 1 part dried bark, 1 part crushed nettle, and warm water. Add weight to prevent the starter from floating. Close the bucket tightly with a lid and let it ferment. Kvass made with dry bread and nettles is ready in a week.
The leftover pulp from the fermentation process isn't thrown away. It's put into the compost heap.
The liquid is strained. It has a high nutrient concentration, so it is used diluted, adding 2 liters per bucket of water. Tomatoes are watered with the bread-nettle starter during the fruit set period.
Dry bread with mullein
During the active growth period of tomatoes, use an infusion of mullein, hay, and stale bread. The resulting liquid is nutritious, and it helps tomatoes grow like crazy. For one bucket, use:
- 3 kg of mullein;
- 2 kg of crackers;
- hay until the remaining volume is filled.
The mixture is poured with warm water and left to steep for two weeks. When the fermentation process stops, the liquid is strained and used to fertilize tomatoes, adding 1 liter per bucket of water. Use ½ a liter of fertilizer per plant.
How to fertilize tomatoes
Fertilize young seedlings with a rusk infusion, combined with watering, twice a week. Fertilizing begins two weeks after transplanting and ends before transplanting into open ground.
Use a starter culture made from 1 kg of breadcrumbs and 5 liters of water. Let it steep for 2 days. Add no more than 1 liter to the irrigation water (8 liters). Thanks to this fertilizer, the tomato seedlings are completely ready for transplanting and quickly adapt to their permanent location.
Detailed diagram of the introduction of nutrients
Fertilize with a rusk infusion after the seedlings have fully rooted. At least two weeks have passed since transplanting. The seedlings' establishment is evident by the color of the tops and the new leaves.
Pour 1 cup of water under each bush; this amount is sufficient for a young plant. Root fertilizer is applied in the evening, after the seedlings are thoroughly watered. In depleted soils, apply bread crust fertilizer once every 10 days, combining the feeding with watering, using 1 liter per plant.
Tomatoes growing in fertile soil, fertilized in the fall with superphosphate, potassium nitrate, and humus, are fed two more times:
- When the first cluster of buds begins to form, prepare an infusion of dried breadcrumbs with nettle or mullein, diluting it with water at a ratio of 1:10. Pour 1 liter under each bush.
- Fertilize again after 2 weeks. Add 1 cup of ash to the prepared infusion of crackers (10 liters), stir, let stand for 12 hours, and pour 1-2 liters per tomato plant.
Advice from the pros
Experienced vegetable growers never use bread infusion to feed sick, unrooted tomatoes. Beginner gardeners may find their advice helpful:
- Tomatoes growing in the shade are watered less frequently and less abundantly;
- Do not feed tomatoes in the middle of the day if the weather is sunny and hot;
- sourdough is more beneficial for tomatoes growing in alkaline soil;
- You need to add ash to the breadcrumb starter, 1 glass per bucket.

My mother taught me how to use breadcrumbs to feed tomatoes. Her tomatoes were always sweet and delicious. We dry the bread in the winter, and in the spring, when transplanting the seedlings into open ground, we soak it and place it in each hole.

This is my second year growing tomatoes using breadcrumbs. The first year, I poured a handful of breadcrumbs into each hole, added water, and planted my seedlings in the mud. I was pleased with the harvest, its quantity, size, and flavor. The second year, in addition to the breadcrumbs, I added a handful of ash to the holes. The harvest was excellent.
