The Far Eastern cucumber variety was officially registered in the USSR in the 1930s. However, it is known for certain that it was cultivated as early as the mid-19th century. The Avangard and Vladivostok 155 cucumbers were developed from the Far Eastern variety. It was officially registered in 1950. It can be grown in all regions of the Russian Federation. Almost all major Russian companies produce its seeds.
Main characteristics
This variety is bee-pollinated and suitable for outdoor cultivation. If placed in a greenhouse, hand pollination will be required. Far Eastern is a vigorous variety with long, branched shoots. The leaves are medium-sized and green, sometimes dark green.
Far Eastern has a mixed flowering pattern. Female and male buds are equally likely to appear. This is a mid-season variety. Plants begin to bear fruit approximately 50 days after the first shoots emerge.
The variety is unpretentious:
- Tolerates lack of water well.
- It does not suffer from slight night frosts.
- Resistant to powdery mildew.
There are no official yield statistics. It is generally considered average. Harvesting is possible until the first frosts.
The Far Eastern cucumber variety has an elongated elliptical shape. The average length of a ripe cucumber is 10-15 centimeters. It weighs 100-200 grams. The skin is medium thick and green. It has light stripes and a slight waxy coating. The fruit has large bumps with black spines. The pubescence is sparse.
Cucumbers have a pleasant flavor and are versatile from a culinary perspective. They can be pickled, salted, or eaten fresh. Fresh cucumbers retain their marketability and flavor for up to 2 days.
The long-standing popularity of cucumbers is determined by its advantages:
- they are able to grow in stressful conditions;
- they are characterized by a long fruiting period;
- high quality fruits;
- cucumbers are versatile;
- The seeds are inexpensive and readily available.
However, the variety is not without its drawbacks:
- there are many barren flowers, which reduces crop yields;
- If cucumbers are not harvested in a timely manner, their appearance will quickly deteriorate, but their taste will not change;
- fruits may be hollow;
- If cucumbers are not watered enough, they may become bitter.
Growing technology
This variety has gained popularity throughout Russia. Cucumbers are grown in both the south and central regions. It is popular in areas with risky farming.
The seedling method is recommended. It allows for faster harvesting:
- About a month before planting in the ground sow seeds in pots.
- You can place 1-2 seeds in one container.
- They need to be placed at a depth of 2 centimeters.
- They can be grown both at home and in greenhouse conditions.
- Recommended temperature is 27 degrees.
For outdoor cultivation in the Far East, choose soil with a high nutrient content. The soil should have good aerating properties.
As soon as the first sprouts appear, the temperature should be lowered. The recommended temperature is 22 degrees Celsius. To prevent the seedlings from stretching, they can be provided with additional light. Seedlings can be fed with mineral and natural fertilizers. Complex fertilizers are recommended. If growing seedlings on a windowsill, they require:
- potassium;
- nitrogen;
- phosphorus.
Applying liquid fertilizers to seedlings consists of two main stages:
- When leaves appear on the seedlings, the need for fertilizer is determined by the fact that the plant enters the phase of active photosynthesis;
- A few days before planting the seedlings, it allows the plant to receive nutrients that will help it successfully get through the adaptation period in a new location.
When the sprouts reach a height of 15 centimeters, they can be planted. The temperature should be between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius. The ideal time for planting seedlings is early May.
Cucumbers of this variety should be grown using a trellis. The spreading method should only be used if planting in a hilly area. Under these conditions, one square meter is sufficient for five plants.
Cucumbers should be planted in holes spaced 35 centimeters apart. If you plan to grow cucumbers in a greenhouse, using seedlings is not necessary. The beds in the greenhouse should be 60 centimeters wide and spaced one meter apart.
Care
The main agricultural practices for the Dalnevostochny variety are watering, loosening the soil, and fertilizing. After planting cucumbers in open ground, they need to be watered regularly (twice a week). It's important to avoid allowing the soil to dry out. Evening is considered the ideal time for watering. If there is heavy rainfall, refrain from watering until the soil becomes dry. Water used for irrigation should be warm. Cold water will promote fungal diseases and root rot.
When the plant has 3-4 leaves, mulch the soil with humus or agrofibre. This is an excellent preventative against excessive soil dryness.

- During the first feeding, it's worth adding a special solution. To prepare it, you'll need 1 tablespoon of urea and 60 grams of superphosphate. These should be diluted in 10 liters of water. This feeding should be done after the first three leaves have appeared.
- When flowering begins, a second feeding is needed. For this, prepare a solution of 20 grams of ammonia acid, 30 grams of potassium acid, and one cup of wood ash. Dissolve these ingredients in 10 liters of water.
- When the plant is actively producing fruit, it's advisable to use liquid organic fertilizers. They can be applied to the roots or sprayed on the cucumber leaves.
Loosening the soil and weeding should be done once a week.
Major diseases and insect pests
The Dalnevostochny 27 variety is characterized by excellent disease resistance. However, if cultivation practices are not followed, it may be susceptible to powdery mildew or root rot.
The main preventative measure is controlling the intensity and frequency of watering. Plants can be treated with fungicides. If the plant is completely infected, it should be dug up and destroyed. The hole where the diseased plant was should be treated with a copper sulfate solution.

- spider mites;
- aphid.
To protect against these insects, it's recommended to plant dill near cucumbers. You can also treat cucumber plants with garlic water. To prepare it, soak half a kilogram of garlic in 10 liters of water. Let this infuse for three days.

I've been growing Far Eastern cucumbers for many years. I plant them with purpose. It's important to train the plant correctly to ensure an excellent harvest. I manage to harvest about 5 kg per square meter. Our harvest doesn't linger; we eat the cucumbers fresh. They're delicious.
Natalia, 29 years old.
I choose the Dalnevostochny variety because it's resistant to night frosts. It also tolerates fluctuations in soil moisture. I haven't noticed any particular drawbacks. The seeds are very inexpensive. I plant them directly in open ground. I don't require much care, but I get a consistent harvest.
Far Eastern cucumbers can grow in stressful conditions. They have a long fruiting period and produce high-quality fruit.
