Window-balcony cucumber variety: growing, planting, and care, photos

Cucumbers

The Window-Balcony hybrid self-pollinating cucumbers were developed in 2007. These moisture-tolerant, annual, and heat-loving plants are suitable for beginners and those who don't want to spend time on care. The garden bed is set up in an apartment. The gardener's task is to select healthy seedlings. They can be found in stores or from breeders. Regardless of the source, the seeds are pre-soaked in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Whether indoors, in a greenhouse, or outdoors, this crisp vegetable should not be planted near ornamental crops.

Description of the variety

The breeders developing "Window-Balcony f1" had one goal in mind: to develop a variety suitable for indoor cultivation. The results exceeded expectations. The cucumbers performed equally well in open ground, indoors, and on windowsills. The planting material has no geographical restrictions.

Other characteristics:

  • compact size of the whip;
  • medium branching;
  • shortened internodes;
  • about 7-8 ovaries are formed in 1 axil;
  • the female type of flowering predominates;
  • fruit shape: oval-cylindrical;
  • deep green color;
  • the length of a mature cucumber ranges from 6 to 8 cm;
  • average weight ranges from 70 to 95 g;
  • the skin is covered with short white stripes;
  • no pronounced ribbing;
  • sweetish taste without any trace of bitterness.

The ripening period is 40 to 45 days, depending on care. In a single season, four bushes yield 9 to 12 kg of crispy vegetables.

Note!
Up to five bushes are planted in an apartment. This is enough to ensure complete care.

We grow it ourselves

The gardener uses a metal pot or a wooden box for growing. If you don't have anything like that on hand, consider a plastic container. It's best to choose a dark-colored one. The soil is purchased from a gardening supply store. The seeds are pre-sorted and then, as mentioned earlier, soaked in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. The soaking time is 20 minutes.

The next step is to lay the seeds out in a single row and place them on a sunny window. Heat baths continue for about 2-3 hours. The next steps are:

  • the place for placing the pots is chosen on the south side of the apartment;
  • You cannot place other green plants next to the crispy vegetable;
  • the temperature range should be stable throughout the growing season: from + 18 C (day), from + 14 C (night);
  • the gardener regularly monitors the soil moisture level;
  • Irrigation and aeration are carried out as needed.

Seeds are planted in late February. Active agricultural practices begin in March-April. This timeframe may be adjusted according to the region's climate. Nighttime temperatures serve as the starting point. Gardeners begin working immediately after the thermometer consistently reads above 12°C (55°F) or 13°C (55°F).

Practical part

cucumber seedlings

You can speed up seedling emergence without much effort. Simply use a seedling starter. In late January or early February, place the seeds in paper cups. Store the containers in a room with stable lighting. The temperature should be between 18°C and 20°C.

Note!
 If planting is carried out in a utility room with insufficient lighting, then a lamp with directional lighting is placed above each container with seedlings.

Manipulation

Description

Note

Maintaining temperature control

Until the first shoots appear, the seeds in the containers are covered with glass or film. This is removed immediately after the first signs of greenery appear on the surface.

Lighting

The minimum duration of daylight is 8-10 hours

If the windows do not face the sunny side, then you will have to install directional lamps

Watering This is done daily. It's important to ensure that the liquid doesn't stagnate in the containers with the seed, otherwise it will cause root rot.

Water for irrigation is pre-settled for 2-3 hours.

Top dressing

The focus is on nutrient solutions. They consist of 6 liters of clean water and 1 tablespoon of urea. The average consumption is 1 cup per seedling.

The first time is carried out 14 days after the first shoots appear. The second time is carried out 7 days later.

Transplantation into boxes

Each bush requires a container with a capacity of 5 to 8 liters. The bottom of the container has a drainage hole. Fill it with 10 cm of crushed stone or expanded clay. Top it with a mixture of humus, peat, and sawdust. These ingredients are mixed in equal parts. The dry mixture is then filled with a nutrient solution consisting of 10 liters of water, 2 teaspoons of nitrophoska, 1 cup of ash, and urea.

It is carried out only after 2 to 3 true leaves have appeared on the stem.

Although the "Window-Balcony" variety is low-maintenance, basic recommendations should not be ignored. First, the seedlings are tied up. A wire is stretched above the container containing the seeds. It should be placed at a height of 150-160 cm. A string runs down from the string, and the seedlings are tied to this string.

The second recommendation is to train the vine into a single stem. To achieve this, regularly remove excess tendrils. In addition, side shoots should be removed. This ensures that nutrients are used for fruit development.

Reviews

Tamara

I chose my favorite warm-weather annual varieties for planting. My climate is humid, so the cucumbers needed to be moisture-resistant. The solution was "Window-Balcony F1." It's easy to care for and suitable for those with limited gardening experience.

Peter

I harvested almost 15 kg from five cucumbers planted on my balcony. The cucumbers were juicy and flavorful. They stored well for 3-4 months. Despite my lack of gardening experience, the yield was high. I regularly inspected the plants for signs of disease.

Sergey

The house's windows face south. The abundance of sunlight had a positive effect on the yield. I placed a humidifier next to the windowsill. This helped minimize the negative impact of the heat on the seedlings.

The hybrid variety "Window-Balcony" is easy to grow and tolerant of temperature fluctuations. It's grown indoors. Plant up to four plants per apartment, otherwise care will become more difficult. The second rule is to avoid planting other greenery near this crunchy vegetable. Harvesting is possible 45-46 days after germination.
