Characteristics and description of the tomato "Banana Legs"

Tomatoes

Lovers of unusual tomatoes will be delighted with the Banana Legs tomato. This variety was developed in 1988 in America. In Russia, it quickly spread throughout the country. The original name, Banana Legs, comes from the fruit's unusual shape.

Characteristics of the Banana Legs variety

Tomatoes can be grown in any region of the country. They are especially popular in the south and central Russia. This determinate plant is easy to care for. It's mid-season and can be grown both outdoors and indoors. In the garden, the plants grow to 70-90 cm, and in a greenhouse, up to 1.5 meters. The stems are thin but sturdy. Due to the large number of fruits, the plant needs to be tied to a support.

This tomato has an unusual shape, resembling a Christmas tree ornament—an icicle. Its bright yellow color immediately attracts attention in the garden. A single cluster produces 7-13 tomatoes, which is a delight. The flavor is delicate, with subtle citrus notes. The fruits ripen evenly, making them perfect not only for fresh eating but also for immediate winter storage. Greenhouse fruits weigh up to 130 grams, while those grown outdoors weigh less, 50-80 grams.

The flesh of ripe tomatoes is plump, shiny, and juicy. When cut, they resemble some exotic fruit. Their skin is thick, making them ideal for whole-fruit canning. They can be transported long distances and retain their marketable appearance for up to two weeks. A single bush yields 4-5 kilograms.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Choosing vegetable seeds begins with understanding the variety's characteristics, advantages, and disadvantages. Key advantages include:

  • ease of care;
  • high yield rate;
  • friendly ripening of fruits;
  • attractive color and unusual shape of the tomato;
  • pleasant fruity taste;
  • resistance to late blight and other diseases;
  • quickly adapts to various climatic conditions.

If you follow proper agricultural practices, there will be no problems with the plant. The variety has no known drawbacks.

Helpful! To make tomatoes last longer, pick them unripe.

Growing tomatoes

  • First, you need to think about where you'll sow the seeds for seedlings, and then prepare the site. For a small garden, planting the seedlings in a greenhouse, which you can build yourself, will suffice.
Helpful! To build a greenhouse, you'll need five bent iron rods, each 1.5 meters long, and thick plastic film (2x3 meters). Take the rods and push them into the ground to a depth of 10-15 cm. Space the rods 20-25 cm apart. You should have a greenhouse no more than a meter long. After the rods are in place, take the plastic film and stretch it across the entire surface of the greenhouse. Bury the edges of the film with soil to prevent drafts. Bury the edges less to allow access to the seedlings.
  • Tomatoes prefer loose soil. To achieve this, add peat or rotted sawdust to the soil. For a small greenhouse, you'll need 7-10 kg of peat.
  • The soil under the seedlings must be disinfected. A solution based on potassium permanganate is a proven solution. A one-percent potassium permanganate solution is applied to the soil a week before planting to kill all bacteria.

Using Trichodermin will disinfect the soil and increase beneficial microflora. A solution is prepared at a rate of 1 gram per 1 liter of water. The soil is watered or sprayed generously.

  • Before sowing, seeds can be soaked in a 3% hydrogen peroxide solution. Take a bottle of 3% hydrogen peroxide, heat the liquid to 30°C, soak the seeds in the solution for 10 minutes, and then let them dry.

An inexpensive way to protect seeds from bacterial diseases is to soak them in aloe vera juice. You'll need aloe vera sprigs that have been stored in a dark place for a week. Grind them into a paste and add water. The ratio of aloe vera juice to water is 1:1. Soak the seeds for 24 hours.

  • Sow the seeds in a well-heated greenhouse at a depth of 1-2 centimeters. The air temperature should be around 25 degrees Celsius.
  • Water the seedlings with warm water every two to three days. Monitor the soil carefully, avoiding overwatering to avoid root rot.
  • Plants are planted in the garden bed when they reach 65-70 days from the moment the seeds emerge.
  • An hour before planting, prepare the holes. Make small holes, water them generously, and add mineral fertilizer (1 teaspoon per hole). Place one plant in each hole.
  • The tomato will take a week at best to take root. After that, you need to immediately install a support to avoid damaging the roots.
  • Tomatoes are trained into 2-4 stems. The plants must be pinched and tied to a support.
  • Water the plant with settled water every 5-6 days. To reduce soil moisture evaporation, mulching is recommended. Covering the soil will help maintain the soil's thermal balance and provide better protection for the plant's roots.
  • Top dressing is carried out with complex fertilizers (10 grams per plant) or organic fertilizers (fresh mullein diluted in water, which is watered under the tomato roots).
  • Weeds should be prevented from growing. During the growing season, the beds should be weeded at least 3-4 times.
  • For the plant to thrive, you need to loosen the soil so that the root system is saturated with oxygen.
  • Ripe fruits are harvested when they become bright yellow and slightly soft to the touch.

Reviews from gardeners

Fedor Vitalievich, Oryol region.

I like the "Banana Legs" tomato for its high yield and pleasant flavor. It's easy to care for. I've been planting it for three years now, and I haven't noticed any problems. If the seedlings are strong, there are no problems. It resists diseases very well. My wife loves making various delicious sauces and preserves the fruits whole. I've never seen a more perfect yellow tomato, and I'll continue growing it.

The "Banana Legs" variety boasts attractive yellow, unusually shaped fruits that are widely used in cooking. This tomato is disease-resistant. The fruits are small and ripen evenly. I really like that they are almost uniform in size. The "Banana Legs" tomato is a good variety that is well worth the effort.
