Every vegetable grower wants to grow a high-quality tomato variety in their garden or greenhouse. The variety allows you to choose the right one that will delight you with its taste, good yield, and nutritional value.
One of these varieties is the Barberry tomato.
Characteristics and description
This early-ripening, indeterminate tomato variety is a hybrid. It's a fairly tall plant, reaching up to 2 meters, so it requires support and staking. It also requires pinching. The highest yield is achieved when the bushes are trained to contain 2-3 stems.
The fruits are produced on large clusters, which can contain up to 70 tomatoes. The tomatoes are small—30-40 grams—but very tasty. The fruits are oval, firm, and pink when ripe.
Main purpose: suitable for both canning and fresh consumption.
This variety is suitable for growing in greenhouse conditions.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
The Barberry tomato is very popular among vegetable growers, and this is not surprising, because it has many advantages:
- rapid ripening;
- long fruiting period - until autumn;
- high yield;
- resistance to a number of diseases;
- versatility of taste;
- fairly easy to care for;
- They take up little space because they grow straight up.
However, there are also certain disadvantages that should be taken into account when growing:
- requires tying and installation of support;
- stepsoning is required.
Features of growing and caring for the variety
This variety is intended for greenhouse cultivation. Seeds for seedlings are sown 60-65 days before transplanting into the greenhouse, typically in late March or early April.
True, first select good seeds:
- Pour a glass of water and add half a spoon of salt.
- Stir and add seeds.
- The seeds that float to the surface after 30 minutes are not suitable for planting, but those that remain at the bottom can be planted (it is better to germinate them first (cover them with a wet cloth for a few days and that's it)).
As soon as 1-2 full-fledged leaves appear, remove the side shoots. Transplant the seedlings to their permanent location in mid-May. In southern regions, planting outdoors is also permitted, but this should be done in June.
Don't plant too many seedlings, remember the rule: there should be no more than 3-4 bushes per 1 square meter.
As mentioned above, the bushes grow quite tall, so be sure to tie them up and install supports, otherwise the plant may simply break under the weight of the fruit.
Also, to get a good harvest, follow these care procedures:
- Water it daily (moderately and at the root).
- Don't forget about feeding.
- Periodically loosen and hill up the bushes.
How to fertilize tomato barberry
Even if you prepared the soil in the greenhouse in advance and thoroughly fertilized it before planting, the bushes still need to be fertilized regularly, as this procedure has a positive effect on yield. Ideally, use either organic or mineral fertilizers. Fertilize the plants at least three times:
- The first time is 10 days after planting the seeds.
- The second is when the second brush opens and the ovary is formed.
- The third time - after the first harvest.
Tip! Don't reduce the distance between plants, as this can negatively impact the yield of the bushes. The optimal distance between rows is 60 cm.
Resistance to diseases and adverse conditions
As mentioned above, under favorable growing conditions, this variety is resistant to many diseases. However, if not cared for properly, like any tomato plant, Barberry can become ill. Therefore, it's crucial to maintain humidity in the greenhouse at no more than 65%, promptly remove weeds and pests, and provide moderate watering. Otherwise, the variety may become susceptible to rot, late blight, and other diseases.
Feedback from those who planted

I've been planting this variety for a long time and recommend it to all my friends. The tomatoes are delicious and juicy; I can't get enough of them. They're quite easy to care for. The yield is high, so there's enough for both eating and canning for the winter.

I'm a fairly experienced vegetable gardener and have grown many varieties. But this one immediately became one of my favorites. Productive, delicious, and easy to grow—a dream. I've been growing it for several years now and I couldn't be happier.

My father, who's been familiar with this variety for quite some time, recommended it. After growing it for the first season, I can only say one thing: delicious, juicy, and productive. I'll be growing it again next season!
The Barberry tomato is an excellent variety that makes a wonderful addition to both a greenhouse and a garden plot. With proper care, it will pleasantly surprise you with its high yield and enrich your body with nutrients, microelements, and vitamins!
