Characteristics and description of the Bobcat tomato

Tomatoes

Growing tomatoes can be not only a personal hobby but also a profitable venture. One of the secrets to success is choosing the right plant varieties. It's no secret that some of the best varieties are Dutch-bred tomatoes.

Among them is an excellent hybrid tomato "Bobcat".

Characteristics and description of the variety

The Bobcat tomato is a mid-early variety. The fruits ripen 65-80 days after the first shoots emerge. This hybrid tomato was developed by the Dutch company Syngenta and has been available on the Russian market since 2004.

A low-growing variety with a strong trunk and large, dark leaves. It is valued for its tolerance of adverse conditions and resistance to a number of diseases.

Height, plant weight, color, shape

The Bobcat tomato is a low-growing variety. The bush grows 60-80 cm tall with a very strong trunk and large, dark green leaves. The bush is small but very wide, so it should be planted at a reasonable distance from each other. When grown in a greenhouse, the Bobcat tomato requires pinching out side shoots and tying up the main branches. The first harvest occurs 60-65 days after planting.

The tomatoes are round, firm, and juicy, and resistant to cracking. The flesh is sweet and bright red. Each tomato weighs approximately 300 grams.

Features of cultivation and care

The variety is mid-early, so throughout almost all of Russia it should be planted in open ground through seedlings, and in greenhouses in the northern regions.

Sow seeds in March. Tomatoes are not picky about soil composition; simply use garden soil mixed with humus. Place the seeds individually; no germination is required. Lightly sprinkle the top with soil, moisten, and cover with plastic wrap. Remove the plastic wrap after two leaves appear. Ensure the seedlings receive sufficient light to prevent excessive growth. In spring, provide additional illumination with lamps, and when warmer weather arrives, bring them outside to harden off. Plant the seedlings in open ground after the threat of frost has passed and the weather has become consistently warm. Plant them in a staggered pattern, spaced half a meter apart. The bush is short but very spreading. This is a determinate variety, but it should still be staked, as too many fruits can break the branches.

Bobcat tomatoes don't need to be watered often, but regular fertilizing is essential; this will significantly increase the yield. If grown in a greenhouse, humidity levels must be closely monitored. Regular ventilation is essential.

Disease resistance, advantages and disadvantages

A distinctive feature of this hybrid is its excellent resistance to a number of diseases. The Bobcat tomato is resistant to fusarium, verticillium wilt, and tobacco mosaic. It is virtually immune to late blight. The fruits retain their marketable appearance and do not crack under any weather conditions.

From the above, it can be noted that this tomato has the following advantages:

  • versatility (can be grown in greenhouses and open ground);
  • phenomenal resistance to diseases;
  • undemanding to soil composition and watering, withstands high temperatures;
  • beautiful appearance of fruits;
  • good sugar taste;
  • long-lasting storage;
  • Suitable for growing for sale.

This variety has no shortcomings. However, growing it in northern regions is quite challenging.
