Characteristics and description of the tomato "Swamp"

Tomatoes

The distinctive green color of ripe tomatoes, combined with their sweet and sour flavor, attracts many gardeners. However, growing the Boloto variety still requires some effort, as it's not one of the most easy-to-grow varieties.

Characteristics and description of the variety

Tomato bushes are indeterminate, meaning they grow continuously, even after flowering. Therefore, the bushes are quite tall, up to 1.5 m, and require staking. The bushes are moderately foliated, with large, green leaves. The leaves are loose and slightly corrugated when touched. The variety was included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements in 2004. The first inflorescence forms above the 9th leaf, then every 3 leaves. Inflorescences range from simple to intermediate.

Plant height

If you plant the seedlings in an open area, the bushes will grow to a height of 1-1.1 m, and if you plant them in a greenhouse, then one and a half meters.

Color, shape of fruits, weight

The tomatoes are flattened and round, with clearly visible ribs. If the plants are planted in a greenhouse, they can yield fruits weighing 280-310 g, while those grown outdoors yield tomatoes weighing 150-220 g. Unripe tomatoes are green, while ripe tomatoes are also green but have pinkish or yellowish spots, as well as a characteristic dark green spot near the stem.

Productivity

4.8-5.5 kg of tomatoes are harvested per square meter of open space, and if the seedlings are planted in a greenhouse, then 5.4-6.0 kg per square meter. Three plants are planted per square meter.

Feedback from those who planted

According to gardeners, tomatoes are excellent for whole-fruit pickling. People really enjoy the unusual green color of ripe tomatoes and their sweet and sour flavor.

Features of growing and caring for the variety

Choose a well-lit area for planting. Ideally, it should have previously been used for growing cauliflower, carrots, or cucumbers.

In the fall, prepare the area. Apply 4 kg of compost per square meter of soil, then dig it over. Remove all weeds. In early spring, sprinkle 80 g of superphosphate and 20 g of potassium chloride over each square meter of soil, then dig it over again.

Plant the seedlings on a cool, cloudy, but windless day. When planting, press the stems 2 cm into the soil to encourage additional root growth. Prepare supports and tie the bushes immediately. You can use a trellis. After planting, water the tomatoes with warm water.

When planting seedlings, it is better to form a bush with 2 stems, tie them up, and remove side shoots in a timely manner.

Water the bushes regularly with warm water every 3-4 days. After watering, be sure to loosen the soil to prevent crusting and remove weeds. Fertilize with nitroammophoska 2-3 times per season. Water the bushes generously before fertilizing, and water again after.

Instead of nitroammophoska, you can make this fertilizer by feeding your tomato plants two weeks after planting the seedlings: pour one part chicken manure into a bucket, add 15 parts water, then add 300 g of ash and 50 g of superphosphate. Mix everything thoroughly. A bucket of this fertilizer is enough for 15-20 plants.

Remove the lower leaves when the bushes are large enough.

Spraying your tomato plants with Epin-Extra will improve fruit set and increase your yield. To prevent fungal diseases, you can spray your plants with compounds containing copper or sulfur.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Advantages:

  • unusual color and appearance of tomatoes;
  • excellent sweet and sour taste;
  • the fruits can be both canned and eaten fresh;
  • the fruits ripen early.

Flaws:

  • The bushes must be tied up and the side shoots removed;
  • if compared with determinate varieties, which stop growing at the beginning of flowering, the vegetative part takes a long time to develop;
  • The fruits do not last long because they are loose.

Ripening speed

The variety is considered early, as only 95-98 days pass from sowing seeds to harvesting.

The main purpose of the variety

Tomatoes are excellent for canning; they are pickled whole, without cutting, and they are also eaten fresh.

In which regions is it grown?

In the southern regions of Russia, bushes are planted in open areas, and in the northern regions - in greenhouses and hotbeds.

Resistance to diseases and adverse conditions

Unfortunately, this variety is susceptible to anthracnose, a disease that attacks the roots and fruits of the plant. Affected areas become soft, turn brown, then black, and eventually dry out.

To prevent the disease, tomato seeds are treated with a solution of Immunocytophyte. Seedlings are sprayed with Quadris or Flint.

If the bushes are already infected with anthracnose, they are sprayed with compounds such as Thiovit Jet and copper oxychloride.

Timing of planting seeds for seedlings, how to sow

Tomato seeds are sown indoors for seedlings from February 20 to March 10.

Before planting, check the seeds. Add a spoonful of salt to a glass of water and soak the seeds for 15 minutes. Bad seeds will float, and good ones will sink to the bottom. Rinse them and dry them. Next, place the seeds in a damp cloth and wait 24 hours.

It's best to sow 3-5 seeds at a depth of 1 cm in each plastic cup; this way, the seedlings won't need to be pricked out. Thoroughly moisten the soil after planting.

When each bush has 6-8 leaves and is 25 cm tall, it can be planted outdoors. In the central region of Russia, this is done in late May.

Thus, the Swamp tomato is distinguished by its unusual greenish fruits, which can be added to salads.
