Description of the Big White Blues tomato and its growing characteristics

Tomatoes

The "Big White Blues" tomato isn't a variety for beginners. It requires a lot of attention in its care. But the effort is worth it—the fruits ripen to a delicious, unusual brown-purple-yellow color.

The variety was originally developed by Reinhardt Kraft, a German breeder. The Great White Blues was perfected by Stéphane Marier of Quebec City, Canada, who crossed the Great White and OSU Blue varieties.

Advantages:

  • excellent fruits – large, hypoallergenic, do not crack;
  • disease resistant;
  • high-yielding.

Flaws:

  • bushes must be tied to supports;
  • needs to be pinched out;
  • late-ripening;
  • poor yield in open ground;
  • The fruits are not suitable for pickling.

Description

The original name of this variety is "Great Write Blues." It grows well in central Russia, Belarus, and Ukraine. It is considered an exotic plant.

The highest yields can be achieved by growing tomatoes in greenhouses. In open ground, yields are practically zero.

The fruits are suitable for fresh consumption and for making juices.

Characteristic

  • Tall. Grows to an average height of 1.8 meters.
  • The weight of each fruit is about 300 g.
  • To obtain the highest yield, it should be formed into 1 or 2 stems.
Interesting

A surprising fact: the fruits can ripen in a variety of colors: yellow, brown, purple. This is influenced by various factors. They turn purple under cold temperatures. Fruit of this color is considered rare. If you want to grow these particular colors, it's advisable to provide additional lighting. Supplemental lighting during the dark hours can be provided, for example, in a greenhouse using electricity.

Rules for growing seedlings

  • Before sowing, it's best to soak the seeds in a pink solution of potassium permanganate for about 20 minutes. Discard any that float to the surface—they won't germinate. Sow the remaining seeds, rinsing them in water before sowing.
  • To disinfect the seeds, you can leave them in a glass of vodka for 20 minutes.
  • They will germinate faster if you place them in a warm place for 2-3 days before sowing and cover them with a damp cloth. This cloth should be moistened regularly.

Transplanting into a greenhouse or open ground

  • When seedlings are planted in the ground, their height usually reaches 30-35 cm.
  • In the temperate zone, the best time for this is late May to early June. By this time, the threat of recurrent frosts should have passed, and the soil should have warmed to 10 degrees Celsius.
  • The soil for planting should be prepared, ideally in the fall. It's a good idea to add horse manure or complex mineral fertilizer (follow the instructions).
  • Planted bushes should be immediately tied to supports.
  • After planting, water the plants. The next watering and first feeding should be done no sooner than a week later.

Care tips

  • It is important to regularly remove emerging stepchildren.
  • Ventilate the greenhouse for several hours every day.
  • Treat for diseases and pests (regardless of the tomatoes’ resistance to diseases, for greater reliability the procedure should be carried out 2-3 times per season).
  • Water every day (preferably in the evening).
  • When weeds appear, weed the beds.
  • Be sure to fertilize every 10-12 days. Both organic and complex mineral fertilizers are suitable.

Reviews

Maria Viktorovna, Minsk region

The tomato didn't disappoint. The fruit has a pleasant flavor, not sour. It pairs well with other vegetables in salads. I learned about this variety from a friend, and she let me try it. I was also surprised by the color. I'll definitely plant it next year.

Leonid Leonidovich, Mogilev region

My personal approach to this variety is as follows: I remove side shoots almost every 3-4 days. When the first fruits ripen, I quickly remove most of the leaves. I fertilize once every two weeks while the leaves are growing—with organic fertilizer, then only with mineral fertilizers. To prevent late blight, I spray three times during the growing season with a whey solution (1 liter per 10 liters of water). These tomatoes are delicious! They're simply amazing in salads!

    The name of the variety is Great White Blues, not “… Write…”.
