The Vilmorin seed company has been producing high-quality seeds for not just decades, but centuries. The company positions itself in the market as a producer of select varietal and hybrid varieties of vegetable crops. One of the best tomato selections is the "Bonaparte" variety.
Characteristics of tomato
Vilmorinovsky vegetable crops adapt well to Russia's climate, making them popular among domestic gardeners. The Bonaparte tomato has increased resistance to various pathogenic diseases and tolerates long-distance transportation. It is an early-ripening hybrid, reaching maturity in 90-105 days from germination. The seedling period is 45-50 days from germination.
The plum-shaped fruits grow, weighing 140-200 grams. The bushes are indeterminate and can reach a height of 1.8 m. The tomatoes are uniform in size and shape, which increases their marketability. The flesh is firm and juicy, with a small number of seeds. On average, 5-6 tomatoes are produced per cluster. The skin is dense, does not crack, and is reddish-pink in color. They are versatile, suitable for whole-fruit canning and processing into tomato products.
A single bush can yield 6-9 kilograms. Tomatoes are resistant to the following diseases: fusarium wilt, late blight, yellow leaf curl, tobacco mosaic, and cladosporiosis. They are susceptible to cutworms and whiteflies. To control pests, use multi-action chemicals such as "Aktara" and "Confidor." Open-air cultivation is recommended in the Krasnodar Krai, Crimea, and Kuban. In northern Russia and central Russia, tomatoes are grown under plastic covers.
Advantages and disadvantages of the Bonaparte variety
Breeders have successfully developed a comprehensive line of tomato varieties that offer a variety of positive attributes. Let's take a look at these advantages:
- high yield rate;
- resistance to common diseases;
- short period of fruit ripening;
- excellent taste;
- fruits are not prone to cracking;
- tolerate transportation over long distances well;
- long fruiting period, after the first tomatoes are set, flowering does not stop.
The disadvantage of the Bonaparte tomato is its susceptibility to pests.
The process of growing and caring for tomatoes
To get an early harvest, sow tomatoes from late February (seeds continue to sow until April). Following a series of sequential steps for planting and caring for tomatoes will help you grow a healthy, resilient, and, most importantly, productive vegetable crop:
- The growing process begins with preparing the greenhouse, where the plants will remain for the first 45-50 days before transplanting the seedlings into an open bed or greenhouse. Two weeks before the expected planting date, the soil is tilled, the clumps are broken up, and peat is added to loosen the soil. After cultivating the soil, it must be disinfected. For treatment, use modern biological preparations, such as "Baktofit" and "Trichodermin."
- To increase seed germination, soak them in any readily available growth stimulant. The most widely used growth stimulant among gardeners is "Epin." You can also disinfect the seeds, but if you've cultivated the soil, treating the seeds is not necessary.
- The seedlings are planted in moist, compacted soil. The depth of the furrows or holes is 1-2 centimeters. The optimal climate consists of two components: air temperature (22-25°C) and humidity (60-70%). Seeds germinate 7-8 days after planting. Tomatoes germinate evenly.
- Water the plants with warm water (25-30°C) at the roots. During the first few days, water every few days. Throughout the seedling period, the plants can be fertilized. To do this, dilute 1 teaspoon of "Humate" in 10 liters of water and water each seedling at the roots with the resulting solution.

- Before transplanting seedlings into open soil, they must be hardened off for 15 days. If you're planting them in a greenhouse, you don't need to harden them off.
- If you've planted your tomato in a greenhouse, consider mulching the soil underneath. This will reduce moisture evaporation and protect the root system from overheating.
- Adult plants are not watered often; it will be enough to water the tomato once every 5 days.
- Tomatoes need to be fed during flowering to ensure large, juicy fruits. Use any mineral fertilizer containing potassium, phosphorus, boron, magnesium, iron, etc.
- Once the bushes reach a height of thirty centimeters, the gardener needs to install a support to tie the plant up. From this point on, pinching out the side shoots and shaping the bush into one or two stems begins.
- Throughout the growing season, monitor the condition of your tomatoes to promptly eliminate any pests that may infest the plant.
Reviews from gardeners
Yanina Alexandrovna, Stavropol region.
I grew the Bonaparte tomato under plastic covers because I wanted to get my first tomatoes early. I chose the right variety. The fruits ripened quickly. The flesh is pink, juicy, and delicious. They store well. The yield is high, and the plants are literally covered with tomatoes! I had no problems growing them. I fertilized the plants three times. I really liked the variety; I'll definitely plant it again next year.
Angelina Stepanovna, Krasnodar region.
I grew the "Bonaparte" tomato variety in open ground. The bushes grew tall, 1.5-1.8 meters. Each plant produced about 6-8 clusters, each with 3-6 tomatoes. The fruits were juicy, firm, and delicious. The plant is strong; I treated the bushes for cutworm attacks throughout the growing season. I recommend everyone try the "Bonaparte" variety.
