The Wild Fred tomato variety was developed back in 2000. It was then that breeders from Australia and the United States began creating "hobby" varieties—modified subspecies of plants in the nightshade family.
The project was named "Gnome".
Characteristics of the Wild Fred tomato
While working on growing this variety, the project staff set themselves the following tasks:
- Increase the yield and shelf life of fruits;
- Increase susceptibility to various diseases that affect all subspecies of nightshade.
It's worth noting that Wild Fred's creators succeeded in realizing their plans, and as a result of their extensive development, several more "tomato" varieties were bred, which were collectively known as "Gnome."
Wild Fred has become the most popular and successful variety, possessing a host of characteristics that distinguish it from other tomatoes. The general characteristics of this plant are as follows:
- Wild Fred is a mid-season tomato;
- Gardeners “know” it as a very productive variety, belonging to the determinate culture;
- This tomato can be grown in a garden in almost any part of our country;
- It is unpretentious in its care and can withstand various temperature changes and adverse environmental conditions;
- This variety doesn't require side-children. That is, there's no need to remove shoots in a timely manner to achieve an even more abundant harvest, as is done with other plants in this group;
- Wild Fred seeds are widely used by both amateur and professional gardeners in large-scale commercial cultivation of nightshades;
- This tomato is very easy to grow, and even if you don’t live near the plantings constantly during the summer, it won’t dry out.

Plant characteristics
Let's take a look at the main "parameters" of this bush – they will help you get a general idea of Wild Fred:
- The bushes can reach about 70 cm in height, they do not need to be tied up, which greatly simplifies the process of caring for the plant;
- Tomato fruits are oval, or less commonly, round, in shape. They have slight flattening at the top and bottom;
- Ripe fruits have a very unusual color – brown. Sometimes, tomatoes can grow a dark purple hue;
- Ripe tomatoes weigh around 150 grams. This varies depending on the growing location and care requirements.
- Wild Fred has a very rich taste and a distinct aroma;
- The main purpose of this variety is its use in the preparation of various salads, where their flavor parameters are revealed most fully;
- The pulp is often used to create homemade sauces, ketchups, etc.
Planting and care
Wild Fred seedling seeds should be planted 55-60 days before the planned outdoor transplant. This tomato is grown in the same way as any other nightshade crop:
- The seeds germinate in a small common container;
- After the first more or less small plants appear, they are transplanted into separate pots so that the root system becomes stronger;
- Then Wild Fred is “sent” to the garden, with no more than 4-5 bushes per square meter.
This method will ensure the highest quality and most abundant harvest. Wild Fred is an easy-to-grow variety that will ensure a consistent harvest and always ensure its quality.
Treating growing bushes is also quite simple. They only require mineral nutrition and protection from diseases and pests. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer packaging.
The advantages of this tomato variety are quite obvious – especially if you read reviews from amateur and professional gardeners.
Reviews
Galina Petrovna, 33 years old, Voronezh
"I first started growing this variety back in 2002. I noted its excellent qualities in terms of the uniformity of the fruit and its convenient size. I use it in salads, which is also the variety's main purpose.
All the bushes grow quite wide, but not very tall – 45-50 cm. One bush produces about 12 kg of tomatoes."
Nina Alekseevna, 29 years old, St. Petersburg
"I didn't like Wild Fred. It's quite an expensive variety, even though it produces a decent harvest. Therefore, people plant more "serious" tomatoes, which require additional care. But I can recommend this one to any beginner who wants to try their hand at growing tomatoes."
