"Favorit" is a first-generation hybrid developed by the Ilyinichna Scientific and Production Agricultural Firm. This crop is included in the State Register as a variety suitable for cultivation in various conditions: in open ground in the south, and in greenhouses and under plastic film in the central and northern regions. It has been approved for cultivation in zone 3 for almost 20 years.
Characterizing the "Favorite"
Tomatoes will achieve optimal results when they form indeterminate bushes with a single stem, requiring staking or trellis support. Ripening time is average—from planting seeds to harvesting tomatoes takes 107 to 120 days.
The bushes are distinguished by a good number of medium-sized, gray-green leaves with a slight corrugation and simple, compact inflorescences with three to four fruits each. The latter begin to form after the seventh leaf and then every three. The best planting density is considered to be two to three plants per square meter. The yield is approximately two dozen kilograms of tomatoes per square meter and approximately 6 to 7 kilograms per bush.
This variety is known for its good resistance to such diseases as tobacco mosaic virus, fusarium, cladosporiosis, and tolerates slight darkness very well.
When growing a crop, it is important to tie it to a vertical support and feed it with mineral fertilizers.
About the fruits of this crop
The "Favorite" tomatoes themselves are distinguished by:
- large in size and weighing up to 350 grams;
- rich red colour when ripe;
- non-ribbed and smooth thin skin, with a slight indentation near the stalk;
- aesthetic component.
Tomatoes are good for commercial purposes, but it is important to be aware of the possibility of damage during transportation.
This tomato hybrid is versatile. They can be used fresh or in salads. They are perfect for extracting tomato juice, making sauces, pastes, and lecho. The only caveat is that, due to their thin skin, these tomatoes are not ideal for whole-fruit pickling.
About the advantages and disadvantages of "Favorit"
Experts and gardeners who have already grown this variety note the following advantages:
- large fruit size;
- stability of harvesting throughout the entire fruiting period;
- resistance to many tomato "disasters";
- possibility of planting in a shady place;
- versatility of culinary use;
- commercial appearance of the crop, possibility of commercial sale;
- pleasant taste qualities of tomatoes.
The negative manifestations of the variety include:
- not very long storage;
- impossibility of long-distance transportation;
- difficulty of canning whole;
- required tying of the bush to the supporting structure.
About the rules for growing and caring for "Favorite"
Some believe that a good yield can only be achieved by planting seedlings and watering them occasionally. In fact, this method can yield a stable harvest, but the fruit will lose quality. For example, a sweet taste is often achieved only with supplemental feeding with mineral and organic fertilizers. Therefore, careful care is essential.
In general, the rules for growing and caring for the "Favorite" hybrid are no different from those for cultivating other tomatoes, including "Cherry" tomatoes.
- Young seedlings should be planted after stable, warm temperatures outside. In most Russian regions, this is in late May or early June. If planted in unfavorable conditions, the seedlings will be weak, unhealthy, and will not develop quickly.
- The seedling growing area must be rotated annually. This is important for restoring the soil and enriching it with vital elements.
- When planting tomatoes, you should avoid choosing a location where eggplants, bell peppers, or potatoes were previously grown, as they will share the same nutritional content and may become infected with late blight.
Reviews of the tomato "Favorite"
Everyone who has tried to plant this hybrid and seen its productivity recommends it for planting.
Valentina, 36 years old, Moscow region
My neighbors at my dacha gave me "Favorit" seeds; they've been growing them for three years now. I should note that, despite the variety being considered indeterminate, the bushes didn't grow very tall—they remained about a meter tall. I covered the seedlings with plastic. Most importantly, the fruits ripened to be truly large, with a strong attachment to the stem. I'll continue growing this variety.
Many people liked the fruits of "Favorit" as well as the characteristics of the bush itself.
Sergey, 50 years old, Ivanovo region
What's appealing about this variety is that the fruits can be picked with their stems still attached; they don't fall off during harvesting. This means I've noticed they store better.
Alexey and Elena, 42 years old, Krasnodar region
We were very pleased with the clusters that formed as they ripened. Each one bore five fruits, weighing almost 400 grams each. It's only important to tie the bush to a support; it grew to 1.7 m (4.7 ft).
So, "Favorite" truly lives up to its name: it's a favorite in garden plots, homesteads, and farms. Many appreciate the decorative appearance of the entire cluster and the weak growth of shoots. We encourage you to give it a try. Good luck!
