Characteristics and description of the French Grape tomato

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are one of the most popular crops among gardeners. A unique variety is the French Grape Tomato. This variety is ideal for canning. The firm, shiny skin won't be damaged during jarring, and the flesh will retain its juiciness.

The fruits can be salted, pickled, and used to make tomato paste or tomato juice. Tomatoes are also eaten fresh.

Characteristics, description of the variety, photo

French Grape Tomato is a Siberian-bred tomato variety with no connection to France. It's believed that the origin of the variety's name has its own legend. The clusters of this variety of tomato are very similar to bunches of grapes. And grapes, like grape wine, are naturally associated with France.

Height, plant weight, color, shape

When grown outdoors, the tomato bush reaches approximately 1 meter in height, while in a greenhouse, it can reach 1.5 meters or more. Fruit weight for this variety ranges from 60 to 110 grams. The fruit is elongated, with a slight thickening near the stem and a beak on the opposite side. Ripe tomatoes are a rich red color. The flesh is sweet.

Features of growing and caring for the variety

This variety is suitable for both open field and greenhouse cultivation. Plant height varies under different growing conditions, from 1 meter in open field to 1.5-2 meters in greenhouses. Tomatoes of this variety ripen in clusters. The number of clusters per plant, as well as the number of fruits in each cluster, depends on growing conditions. With proper care, a single plant can produce up to four clusters of 7-8 fruits each.

Care

The main components of caring for this tomato variety are watering, fertilizing, and staking. The bush is staking immediately after planting. Staking will prevent the bush from breaking and ensure the safety of the rather large harvest.

Important! There's no need to remove side shoots. The more shoots on the bush, the greater the harvest.

Planting and ripening times

Seeds for germination are sown in March. After 2-3 true leaves appear, the seedlings can be transplanted. Seedlings are planted in a greenhouse in early May, and in open ground at the end of May. In open ground, the fruits ripen late, by August.

In which regions is it grown?

This variety is unique. It adapts to growing in various regions. In northern regions, it is best grown in a greenhouse, as the fruits ripen quite late and the harvest can be completed before frost. The crop tolerates temperature fluctuations well.

The fruits also ripen well. Therefore, if early autumn frosts occur, you can pick semi-ripe tomatoes, which will ripen beautifully at home, maintaining their flavor for several months.

Advantages and disadvantages of the variety

Benefits of tomatoes:

  • high yield;
  • simplicity and unpretentiousness of cultivation;
  • the fruits withstand transportation well;
  • resistance to diseases and adverse conditions;
  • long fruiting and storage.

Disadvantages of tomatoes:

  • the variety is mid-late and does not have time to ripen in northern regions;
  • not always pronounced taste qualities;
  • the presence of voids inside the fruit.

We grew this variety last year. We had a good harvest. But we didn't like the taste of the tomato. We made some pickled ones.

We loved the tomatoes. We grew them in a greenhouse. We didn't even have time to properly care for them, but the plants didn't get sick. There were plenty of tomatoes, and we were able to harvest them until October. I recommend them.

We tried planting it once. The skin was thick and the flesh was not juicy. I wouldn't recommend it for those with small plots and no time for experimentation. It would be better to plant regular "cream of the crop" varieties.

A neighbor at my dacha gave me a few plants of this French variety. My expectations were met. The tomatoes are medium-sized, almost oval in shape. They look very pretty in the jar. We made an assortment of pickled tomatoes and cucumbers.
