Tomato "Cardinal": characteristics and description of the variety

The soil for growing "Cardinal" tomatoes should be light and nutritious. It's best to plant tomatoes in beds previously occupied by beans, carrots, or onions. Seeds for seedlings are sown from the last week of March until early April at a depth of no more than 3 cm. Pre-treat the seeds with a light pink solution of potassium permanganate. Before planting, the seedlings should be hardened off. They are planted after the spring nighttime freezing temperatures have ceased. No more than nine tomatoes should be planted per square meter. Further care consists of regular watering, feeding, and tying up the tall plants.

A single cluster typically contains no more than six tomatoes, which are heart-shaped, smooth to the touch, and vibrant in color. The first ripe tomatoes are usually the largest. Subsequent ones will be smaller, weighing around 400 grams. This variety is used for salads, as well as for processing for further preservation as tomato paste, ketchup, or sauce. Due to its large size, "Cardinal" is not suitable for whole-fruit pickling.
