Characteristics and description of the tomato "Cosmonaut Volkov"

Tomatoes

Most people love fresh fruits and vegetables, especially when they're grown in their own gardens. And even those who don't enjoy fresh produce certainly enjoy canned produce. Vegetable growing, like all other aspects of the home garden, is advancing rapidly.

At this stage, many varieties of tomatoes have been developed, but those who don't like to experiment always return to proven varieties, one of which is the Cosmonaut Volkov variety.

Description of the tomato variety 'Cosmonaut Volkov'

This tomato variety is considered a tall variety, reaching a height of 2-2.5 meters, with 2-3 tomatoes per bunch, and sometimes even more. Cosmonaut Volkov is excellent for salads, grilling tomatoes with skewers, and sautéing in a WOK pan. It's a delicious, juicy variety that's easy to grow and store. With proper care, you'll be very pleased with the yield, as fruits can weigh up to 600 grams or more.

Characteristics of the species

A characteristic feature of this type of vegetable is its large fruit size and high yield, as well as the fact that it can be grown not only in open ground but also in a greenhouse. Another key characteristic is its tall stature. If you're told that "Cosmonaut Volkov" only comes in red, don't believe it; it also comes in yellow and fiery brown. These tomatoes have large seeds. Ripening time is approximately four months.

Features of cultivation

You can either buy seeds for sowing at a specialty store or prepare them yourself. To prepare the seeds, you need:

  1. In summer, when the fruits ripen on the bushes, allow the fruit to ripen.
  2. Pick the overripe fruit and let it rot.
  3. Collect the seeds from this fruit, dry them and store them until the season of preparing seedlings.

Before preparing seedlings, the seeds must be treated, or disinfected. This can be done using a potassium permanganate solution. Prepare the solution and soak the tomato seeds in it for 15-20 minutes. While the seeds are disinfecting, prepare the container for harvesting the seedlings.

Plastic bottles with a capacity of 1–1.5 liters are very convenient for preparing seedlings. They can be stored in such containers on a windowsill in your apartment or house until they are ready to be planted in the ground. Place cut foam plastic (approximately 1 cm by 1 cm) at the bottom of the bottle to create drainage. Then fill it with soil, which can be purchased at a gardening store, and sow the tomato seeds. Seedling preparation should begin two months before transplanting into the ground.

When transplanting seedlings into open ground, 'Cosmonaut Volkov' bushes should be spaced approximately 70 cm apart. Due to the tall growth of the tomato bushes and the large fruit, the stems of the plant must be tied and the soil properly drained.

To obtain a good harvest, it is necessary to water the bushes promptly and abundantly, remove weeds, weed, as well as properly fertilize with fertilizers, and carry out preventive measures against harmful insects and diseases.

But one thing bothered me: I couldn't tie them up without a man, as I had to drive tall stakes into the ground, which isn't something every woman can do. But these tomatoes are worth the effort. I highly recommend them."
