Tomato "O la la": characteristics and description of the variety, reviews

Tomatoes

When it comes time to decide on crops to plant, many gardeners are unsure which tomato variety to start with. Those looking to grow a tomato plant that is both disease-resistant and productive are advised to consider the "O La La" tomato variety. This variety is easy to grow for gardeners with little tomato experience. This hybrid quickly became popular among Russian farmers. It's a shining example of the work of talented domestic breeders.

Description and characteristics

According to the official registry description, breeders introduced the "O La La" hybrid in 2004. By that time, there were numerous hybrid tomatoes available worldwide. Despite this, "O La La" managed to outsell many rivals and gain recognition. If grown in a greenhouse, this variety is also suitable for those living in regions with less-than-warm weather.

Of course, the Far North region is an exception, as extreme weather conditions make growing tomatoes impossible. Gardeners working in the central or southern parts of the country can safely grow tomatoes outdoors.

The "O La-La" tomato hybrid boasts high yields. The plant grows to a medium height, reaching a maximum height of one and a half meters. This tomato variety is classified as a determinate plant. A significant advantage is its good resistance to the microorganisms that cause tobacco mosaic. The "O La-La" variety is resistant to a number of other tomato diseases due to its excellent immune system.

Ripening takes between 90 and 105 days. Upon biological maturity, the fruits begin to turn their characteristic deep pink color. A single fruit can weigh a minimum of 150 grams. With the use of growth stimulants and good fertilizers, the maximum weight can reach 250 grams.

O La La tomatoes have a remarkable flavor profile, which is one of the main reasons for the rapid growth in popularity of the O La La variety. The fruit's skin is thick, revealing juicy flesh. The dry matter content is 6%. Judging by reviews, the O La La variety is most often used for table purposes. It is best eaten fresh. However, due to its compact size, the tomatoes are suitable for canning and juice production. The flavor is ideal, but it has a predominantly tart note.

The "Oh La La" tomato's fame, if we consider its characteristics, stems from its ability to bear fruit well. Under ideal growing conditions and proper care, a single plant can yield up to 8 kg of fruit. If strict planting guidelines are followed, an average of 22 kg of tomatoes can be harvested per square meter. Although "Oh La La" tomatoes are rarely planted commercially, they store well and have excellent marketability.

Growing

The timing of planting the "Oh La La" tomato is determined by the plans for transplanting it into open ground. There are no strict deadlines; gardeners need to adjust the timing of sowing and subsequent transplanting tomato plants based on the specific climate zone.

  1. Tomatoes are easy to grow from seeds. You'll need special pots or a plastic bag.
  2. Seeds can be sown from late March to early April if the gardener plans to grow plants outdoors. In a greenhouse, it's best to start sowing seeds earlier, from late February to mid-March.
  3. Young seedlings should be stored at a temperature of 18°C. They should be sown in small pots and later transplanted into containers up to 9 cm deep to allow the plant to form two true leaves.

Young seedlings are available at garden centers in the spring if a gardener cannot maintain the right conditions for germination and growth, or does not have the space to grow tomato seedlings.

The plant may require support. Therefore, when replanting, consider installing a support. Before planting, thoroughly dig the garden, water it, and loosen the soil to ensure maximum air circulation. This not only improves the root structure and allows it to strengthen, but also prevents the development of certain diseases.

For fertilization, use high-quality compost. If the plant is at risk of frost, cover it overnight. For additional protection, apply mulch after planting. Not only can mulch reduce moisture evaporation and maintain soil warmth, but it also increases the amount of nutrients in the soil. As a result, the "Oh La La" tomato plant will produce more fruit.

Care

  1. According to reviews and gardeners' advice, the soil in which the "Oh La La" tomato variety is grown should be watered deeply and regularly, at least twice a week. Tomatoes don't respond well to dry periods between waterings. Maintaining soil moisture will help prevent rot and the formation of black spots on the leaves, which can spread throughout the plant.
  2. Regarding the fertilizer, the formula consists of three macronutrients. Nitrogen is most important for foliage growth, phosphorus promotes fruit growth, and potassium helps build strong stem and root systems.
  3. The "Oh La La" variety of tomatoes requires a lot of nutrients. Fertilize the soil a week before planting and on the same day. Tomatoes thrive on phosphorus, which promotes fruit formation. It's not recommended to use fertilizers high in nitrogen when the plants are just beginning to develop in the soil and are preparing to set fruit. This type of fertilizer promotes bush growth, not fruit production.

Gardeners should also consider fertilizers classified as "organic." A number of soil amendments, often called "organic," are not actually so. The term "organic" in casual gardening parlance doesn't refer to the chemical composition of the material, but to how thoroughly it has been processed. These additives are toxic to the soil, animals, and people.

Important! A special criterion for the care regimen for the "O la-la" variety is loosening the soil, which is carried out after each watering.

Varietal problems

The "Oh La La" tomato variety is susceptible to insect pests, especially tomato hornworms and whiteflies. The good news is that the plant is quite resistant to attacks from pests such as:

  • aphid;
  • microorganisms that cause superficial fruit rot.

Bacteria can cause a fungal disease that can attack the plant at any time during the growing season. This causes gray, moldy spots on leaves and fruit, which later turn brown.

The disease spreads and is sustained by persistently wet weather. It can reappear on crops year after year, as the organisms that cause the disease overwinter in the soil. The variety is resistant to mosaic viruses, which damage the leaves and cause young plants to quickly wilt.

  1. WHY DOES EVERYONE WRITE THAT THE O LA LA VARIETY IS A HYBRID, BUT WHERE IS THE LETTER f 1 ON THE PACKAGE?

    Answer
    1. Elena

And I noticed. The reviews are written by the sellers at the packing stations and online stores themselves. Oh, my God, this is a varietal tomato; I planted it and continue to plant it from my own seeds. And these scribes don't care whether it's a variety or a hybrid; shame on you for misleading me...
