Tomato "Obilnye Maslova": characteristics and description of the variety, reviews

Tomatoes

When choosing a tomato variety for the garden, many farmers opt for the mid-season "Obilnye Maslova" variety, which boasts a short growing season and the potential for a large, high-quality harvest. This variety is well suited for a variety of regions. The key is to follow the planting instructions, taking into account the varietal characteristics. The variety gained widespread popularity in the former Soviet Union thanks to its remarkable taste, the high marketability of its fruits, and the ability to use them both for food and for sale.

Description and characteristics of the variety

This mid-season variety can be harvested at least 110 days after the seedlings first emerge. If weather conditions weren't ideal, it's recommended to wait an additional 10 days. By this point, gardeners will notice that the "Obilnye Maslova" tomato variety produces tall bushes, each capable of producing fruit well. The bush can produce such an abundance of fruit that without staking or additional support, it will break off.

This indeterminate tomato was developed thanks to the efforts of breeder Igor Maslov. Maslov himself recommends growing "Obilnye Maslova" in a greenhouse. However, gardeners in southern regions can easily grow the plant outdoors, provided the weather and soil conditions permit.

In some cases, the bush can grow up to two meters tall. This can be seen in the photo. A characteristic feature, according to the description of the Obilny Maslova variety, is the mandatory procedure of side-sonning. This procedure is carried out when two stems are present.

The characteristics of the "Obilnye Maslova" tomatoes indicate that the fruits have a special color by the time they reach biological maturity.

  1. The fruits, resembling large plums, will have a bright crimson hue.
  2. The average fruit weight is 150 grams. Even better results can be achieved with proper plant treatment at several stages of the growing season.
  3. The fruits are distinguished by their fleshy texture and rich flavor. They're an excellent vegetable for eating raw. They're also a good option for canning and a wonderful fruit for sale. Furthermore, the yield of the "Obilnye Maslova" tomato variety is high enough to warrant consideration for selling if you're growing in a small plot.

Advantages and disadvantages

The "Obilnye Maslova" variety has become a favorite for many due to its excellent fruit characteristics. The tomatoes are noted for their wonderful flavor and versatility. This is the best variety for those with a small plot who want to maximize their yield.

Its advantages definitely include frost resistance; the fruits tolerate sudden temperature changes well. The plant remains resistant to some diseases. Pest attacks are less favorable, as they can ruin the harvest if not properly treated before planting.

Growing

To sow tomatoes for seedlings perfectly, it's enough to consider the weather conditions in your climate zone. Seedlings are planted in the ground when the soil is warm to avoid damaging the plants. On average, 60 days are counted from the expected planting date. This is the most favorable time for sowing tomatoes and developing strong seedlings. To maximize seedling germination, additional pre-germination may be necessary, which is most effective at room temperature. This process takes up to five days.

When planting seedlings in a greenhouse, plan for the first half of May if open-ground conditions are unsuitable. This means sowing will take place around the beginning of March. Don't rush into sowing. If you sow tomatoes too early, ignoring the "Obilny Maslova" description and planting recommendations, you'll have to wait for ideal weather and temperatures to transplant the plants into the ground. During this time, the seedlings may overgrow. Such seedlings are known to weaken quickly, grow poorly, and rarely establish themselves in a new location.

Important! Tall seedlings often become deformed during transplantation, and fruits will not form on these seedlings in the future.

Care Features

  1. The mid-season tomato variety "Obilnye Maslova" (Big Maslova), according to its characteristics, thrives in moist, highly fertile soil. These conditions are ideal for dense plantings. However, if the soil is less than ideal, tomatoes should be planted sparingly.
  2. For the Obilnye Maslova variety, the ideal planting pattern is considered to be within the range of 45-55 cm by 10 cm.
  3. From the moment it's planted, the variety doesn't require any special care, but it does require careful attention to loosening the soil. Fluffy soil allows air to pass freely to the root system, which promotes favorable growth and development. Loosening the soil is most effective after watering or precipitation.

If growing conditions are characterized by high humidity, according to reviews of the "Obilnye Maslova" tomato variety, it requires hilling twice. This will ensure the soil's temperature regime is effective and will positively influence the formation of additional roots, which is beneficial for the plant's strength, resilience, and potential for increased fruiting.

Hilling is carried out ten days after planting the seedlings in the ground. The procedure is repeated 17-19 days after the initial hilling. Caring for this variety of tomato will not be difficult if you plan a balanced watering regimen based on humidity and growing conditions (open ground or greenhouse) and fertilize the tomatoes periodically.

On average, the Maslova variety will require three fertilizing sessions using high-quality fertilizer. Timely side-shoot removal is crucial. To prevent insect attacks that threaten Maslova's fruit, regularly weed the crop, removing any weeds.

Pests and diseases

When considering a variety, it's important to consider gardener reviews. They note the potential for blackleg to develop in tomatoes. This disease is less common in tomatoes than in other vegetables, such as cabbage. However, it spreads more quickly. Blackleg will be more pronounced in the 'Maslova' variety.

Fortunately, tomato disease can be combated by identifying the early signs. High-quality products are used for this purpose, providing comprehensive protection against late blight and leaf spot. The latter disease is less serious for "Obilnye Malova" than gray mold, which affects plants that are poorly ventilated.

Advice! The plant will be well-ventilated if it is tied up and the soil is loosened. This will help prevent many diseases.

Tomatoes of the "Obilnye Maslova" variety are often attacked by whiteflies, which can damage the crop and cause headaches for gardeners. Some people fight the pest with sticky tape to catch the flies. However, this method is less effective than using chemicals.

They affect not only mature adults but also the larvae laid by whiteflies. These insects can carry pathogens that cause rot. For this reason, gardeners strongly recommend using chemicals to eliminate whiteflies.

Reviews

Maxim:

"The variety didn't produce a good harvest right away. The first time, I made a mistake when I planted the seedlings too closely together, not taking into account the soil moisture. The second time, I planted them according to the standard pattern. The difference was immediately noticeable. It's clear the bushes have enough space to grow and bear fruit properly."

Vitaly:

“I love the Maslova variety. I’ve tried several other types of tomatoes under it, but the Obiliny Maslova ones have become my favorites, primarily because of the taste of the fruits.”

Alina:

"The tomatoes are juicy and meaty. Next year I plan to plant more of the crop and sell the fruit."

Julia:

"Thanks to my neighbor for the advice to plant 'Obilnye Maslova'. I have little experience growing tomatoes. I was afraid of making a mistake and choosing the wrong variety. I haven't been disappointed with 'Obilnye Maslova'. The results are excellent."

Pauline:

"The bushes bear fruit well, and all the fruits are uniform and beautiful. It's not embarrassing to share them with relatives or sell them to those with a poor harvest."

Sofia:

"It's a good variety, but I couldn't grow it outdoors. I have to work in the greenhouse. I can't say there weren't any problems with the plant. But it was mostly my fault, as I used low-quality ready-made fertilizer. Apparently, it wasn't enough to increase the yield. But for table use, it was enough for my family."
