Characteristics and description of the Pepper-shaped tomato

Tomatoes

Tomatoes are a long-time staple on every table, and many successfully grow this crop themselves, as a fruit picked from your own garden is much tastier than one bought in a store.

Through the efforts of breeders, many excellent tomato varieties have been developed, satisfying not only a variety of taste preferences but also adapting to growing conditions in different regions, with varying colors and even shapes. One such new variety is the Pepper-shaped tomato, officially introduced in Russia in 2001.

Features of the variety

As the name suggests, this tomato's shape resembles a pepper. Most varieties in this group have firm flesh and few seeds. Fruit colors vary. Ripening times are generally mid- to late-season.

Plant height varies. There are tall (indeterminate) varieties, as well as short ones, no more than a meter tall.

The very first pepper-shaped tomatoes were the result of foreign selection, but they weren't entirely suited to Russia's climate. Soon, a variety was developed in Minusinsk that met the requirements for outdoor cultivation in various soil types found in most regions of the country.

Next, several varieties of pepper-shaped tomatoes were bred, among which every gardener can choose something to suit their taste.

Description of varieties

The list of well-known varieties begins with "Giant," bred in 2005 and registered in 2007. The fruits are very large, weighing 200-300 g and about 15 cm in length, depending on growing conditions and care. Fully ripened tomatoes are a deep red color. They have a pleasantly sweet flavor and the characteristic aroma of fresh tomatoes. They are suitable for eating fresh, stuffing, drying, and pickling.

The Red Pepper Tomato appeared in 2015. Its fruits are slightly smaller than the "Giant" variety, but otherwise have similar properties. Among the red Pepper Tomatoes, there are several other varieties:

  • "Italian spaghetti";
  • Chukhloma;
  • "Banana";
  • "Scarlet Mustang";
  • Peter the Great;
  • Roma.

The Pepper-shaped Raspberry tomato is considered an early-ripening variety—you can harvest your first crop in just 100 days. The fruits have a raspberry hue. They are large, weighing between 120 and 250 g. They have a pleasantly sweet flesh, reminiscent of the well-known "Bull's Heart" variety.

Important, This variety is determinate, meaning it has a limited growth rate (no taller than 150 cm). This makes it ideal for a compact garden.

Another low-growing tomato is the Pepper-shaped "Krepysh" variety. Its bushes don't exceed 45 cm and have a standard shape. The plants are easy to grow outdoors – they adapt to both weather conditions and pests.

Orange tomatoes of this group of varieties have beautiful bright orange fruits weighing about 150 g. The largest yield is obtained in greenhouses.

The Yellow Pepper tomato is a very beautiful and hardy variety. It has one undeniable advantage: it's resistant to pests and hot weather.

Striped tomatoes have a striking appearance: orange and yellow stripes on a red background. These tomatoes look especially beautiful in a jar – their thick skin makes them ideal for canning.

The "Cuban Black" tomato also has a unique appearance. It's a late-ripening variety, producing large fruits—over 300 g. When fully ripe, the skin is closer to a brownish-red color.

Gardeners' reviews

The pepper-shaped tomato was a hit with all lovers of original plants and new varieties. But even those with a more conservative bent appreciated the variety's flavor and other positive qualities.

The seedlings grow well and require little care. Many varieties in this group are disease-resistant and therefore ideal for both greenhouse and open-ground cultivation.

The fruits have a unique shape and a pleasant flavor. The fleshy pulp is ideal for canning and fresh salads.

Productivity

The yields of pepper-shaped varieties are quite high: from 9 to 15 kg per meter of planting. The raspberry tomato produces the highest yields, 15 kg per meter. Next come the "Cuban Black" and orange varieties.

It's important to know that yields depend not only on the variety but also on agricultural practices. The Pepper-shaped tomato has many advantages, and it's worth trying to grow in your own garden.
