Characteristics and description of the tomato "Fat Man"

Tomatoes

The large-fruited tomato variety Tolstyak is a hybrid from the Sedek agricultural firm, intended for cultivation both in greenhouses and in open ground.

Characteristics of the plant and fruits

This tall, bushy plant from the nightshade family reaches 160 cm. It doesn't have particularly abundant foliage, but requires staking and pinching. Seed producers advise gardeners to train the plant to no more than two stems. Up to eight spreading clusters can form on a stem. The fleshy, dense tomatoes are cuboid-round in shape. Closer to the stalk, the shape changes and becomes more ribbed. A ripe tomato has a rich red color, and an individual fruit ideally weighs 250 g or more.

Main features of agricultural technology

Gardeners begin sowing seeds approximately 60 days before planting outdoors or in a greenhouse. Seedlings are transplanted when they have two leaves. After the seedlings have grown and gained strength, gardeners plant the tomatoes in their permanent locations. To ensure favorable growth and fruit development, maintain proper spacing within the garden bed. It is recommended to plant no more than three plants per square meter. If the seedlings are developing into a single stem, four plants are recommended. Then, a standard series of routine procedures is followed: timely soil moisture, application of mineral fertilizers, weeding, and insect and disease control.

It is important for every gardener to remember! The Tolstyak tomato is an indeterminate, mid-season hybrid, which means you shouldn't take seeds from it for further planting.

Positive qualities of the Tolstyak tomato variety

The fruits are fleshy and juicy, with firm flesh that allows for longer shelf life. Nightshade lovers note their pleasant flavor among their advantages. These tomatoes are suitable for fresh consumption, freezing, and processing, including making juices and sauces, and canning for the winter. The variety tolerates transportation and long-term storage well. The Tolstyak variety is also noted for its resilience and viability. These tomatoes are resistant to diseases such as cladosporiosis, fusarium, and tobacco mosaic virus, which causes discoloration of the leaves.

Reviews of tomatoes from gardeners

Irina, 58 years old, Kaluga:

Tomatoes have always been my favorite vegetable. Throughout my life, I've planted different varieties. Recently, I planted Tolstyak in my garden. These tomatoes are rich in vitamins, have a delicious taste, and can easily withstand any adversity. My daughter loves the excellent taste and the fact that they're low in calories. They're great in light salads. We've even tried them as a face mask—the results are amazing.

Ildar, 72 years old, Michurinsk:

My wife and I have a large garden plot where we grow vegetables for sale. And, of course, we can't do without tomatoes. Our plantation has a variety of bushes, all producing a rich harvest. Among them, the Tolstyak tomato variety rightfully takes pride of place. These tomatoes store well, don't spoil, and are easy to transport. Our regular customers repeatedly purchase Tolstyak tomatoes and never tire of praising them.

Lyudmila, 45, Samara:

At first, I didn't even expect the tomatoes to be so large. I was even afraid the branches would break, they were so fleshy and voluminous. I've been planting this variety for several years now and have become accustomed to the bountiful harvest. For canning, I cut the tomatoes lengthwise into small wedges, as they can be quite difficult to fit into jars. I love canning tomato and cucumber salads for the winter; they make a wonderful assortment for family gatherings.
