Ural Bogatyr is a mid-season, tall variety. It is intended for greenhouse cultivation. The plant grows up to 2 meters, so it requires support.
The plant also requires timely removal of side shoots. Forming the bush with 1-2 stems is considered best.
The fruits are pink, large, and heart-shaped, with some specimens growing trapezoidal. They weigh 400-800 grams. The flesh is firm and meaty, with few seeds. The flavor is pleasant and slightly sweet. They make delicious fresh salads, as well as juices, sauces, and pastes. This variety has excellent yields.
It all starts with seedlings
Seed preparation
First of all, you need to sort them, manually removing small, empty and broken ones.
Important! To increase seed germination, soak the seeds in hot water for about 2-3 hours.
Then you can keep them in a solution of mineral fertilizers
Soil preparation
There are several soil options:
- 1 part garden soil, 1 part humus, 1 part black or pressed peat, wood ash (0.5 l per 1 bucket of soil mixture), superphosphate (2 matchboxes per 1 bucket);
- 1 part garden soil, 1 part sand, 1 part black or pressed peat, solution of any mineral fertilizers.
Also, the soil that you can buy in the store is perfect for seedlings.
Sowing seeds
The prepared soil is lightly moistened and poured into the boxes. It is leveled and compacted slightly. Small furrows (about 1 cm) are made, leaving about 5 cm between rows. The seeds are placed in these furrows, spaced 2-3 cm apart. They are then covered with soil and moistened. Next, the boxes are placed in a dark place with a temperature of 22 degrees Celsius.
The first shoots appear in about five days. The first watering is done sparingly with warm water.
The second watering is done one to two weeks after the first. Then the plants are fertilized. At this time, they should have one true leaf. "Effect" fertilizer is suitable for this purpose. It helps strengthen the roots.
When the plants have 2-3 leaves, transplant the seedlings into smaller containers. 10x10 cm containers are suitable. Fill them with the same soil used previously.
After picking, the seedlings should be watered daily, preventing the soil from drying out.
After 20-24 days, the plants are transplanted into larger containers, measuring 10x10 cm. Watering is done once every 7 days.
The double transplanting method restrains seedling growth, preventing them from becoming leggy. Timely watering ensures proper root development.
Planting tomatoes
Preparing the greenhouse
The best time to plant seedlings in a plastic greenhouse is May 1-10. However, it's important to remember that it can still be quite chilly during this period, especially at night. Therefore, it's recommended to cover the greenhouse with an additional layer of plastic. This is removed around June 1-5.
To prevent disease outbreaks, the following precautions should be taken:
- remove approximately 10-12 cm of the top layer of soil;
- then the soil is sprayed with a hot solution of copper sulfate (1:10).
Preparing the land
If the greenhouse soil is clayey or loamy, add one bucket of peat, sawdust, and humus per square meter. Additionally, add three tablespoons of superphosphate, one teaspoon of urea, and one to two tablespoons of wood ash. Then, dig the soil.
Planting Rules
Advice! Never plant overgrown seedlings too deeply, as they may develop additional roots. It's best to plant these plants vertically.
Caring for tomatoes
After planting, do not water the seedlings for about 12-15 days. After 10-12 days, tie the bushes in a convenient manner. The plant is formed into one or two stems with one lower shoot. Seven to eight shoots should be left on the stem. All other shoots should be removed.
Before flowering, tomatoes should be watered once every 5-6 days. This will require 4-5 liters of warm water per 1 m² of area. During fruiting, 10-15 liters of water are needed.
Top dressing
During the growing season, approximately 3-4 root feedings should be performed. The first should be 20 days after planting the plants in the greenhouse. This will require: 10 liters of water, 1 tablespoon of nitrophoska, and 500 g of liquid mullein.
The second one – 10 days after the first. You will need: 10 liters of water, 1 tablespoon of complex fertilizer, 1 teaspoon of sodium sulfate.
The third one is 12 days after the second one. You will need: 10 liters of water, 1 tablespoon of superphosphate, 2 tablespoons of wood ash.
During the fruiting period, tomatoes should be fed with the following composition: 10 liters of water, 1 tablespoon of sodium humate, 2 tablespoons of superphosphate.
Reviews
Marina, 45 years old. I love digging in the soil and have been doing it for a long time. I especially love growing tomatoes. Last year, I met a new inhabitant of my greenhouse: the Ural Bogatyr. I performed preliminary sanitization in the greenhouse, so the tomatoes were disease-free and produced a delightful harvest. The fruits were delicious. I also made a lot of preserves, such as juices and ketchups.
Victoria, 36 years oldI'm a novice gardener and am still choosing tomato varieties, but I liked the Ural Bogatyr. Although I'm a bit wary of tall varieties, I had no problems growing them. We tied the bushes to a trellis. The harvest was impressive. The tomatoes have excellent flavor.
Victor, 62 years oldI really love tall tomato varieties because they produce a wonderful harvest and save precious greenhouse space. Our family really enjoyed the Ural Bogatyr. We made a lot of tomato paste.
