The Yabloonka Rossii tomato is a versatile annual vegetable crop from the Solanaceae family. This variety has been popular with gardeners for several decades.
It was bred by domestic breeders back in the 80s of the 20th century, although until recently it was known under the name “Tamina”.
Features of growing the variety
Yabloonka Rossii is a domestically bred tomato variety. The plant is determinate, meaning it has limited growth. This can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. After the plant has produced 3 to 5 clusters, it stops growing and producing fruit. Therefore, a determinate variety is limited in fruiting and yield. However, the determinate Yabloonka Rossii variety has early, uniform ripening and high, long-lasting yields.
Moreover, the Yablonka Rossii variety is a standard tree. This means even a lazy gardener can grow it, as it doesn't require shaping (pruning) or staking. Because it's a determinate plant, the bushes are short, ranging from 100 to 130 centimeters, but in a greenhouse they can reach up to two meters. On average, a single bush yields 3 to 5 kg.
Apple trees in Russia: growing regions
The Yablonka Rossii variety can be grown both in a garden bed and in a greenhouse, as well as using various greenhouse-type structures. This variety is considered a heat-loving plant, preferring sunny and wind-protected locations. However, it also stands out for its resistance to changing weather conditions, including both sudden increases and decreases in temperature. Therefore, even in central Russia, with its extremely variable climate, this variety can be grown outdoors. The plant is also resistant to diseases commonly found in tomatoes.
Growing seedlings and care
Late March or early April is a good time to sow seeds for seedlings. Since this is an early-ripening variety, the first fruits can be harvested within three months of germination. Seedlings can be pricked out when 2-3 true leaves appear. Transplant the seedlings into the ground when the risk of night frosts is low. This is either the last ten days of May or the first ten days of June. However, if you use plastic covers, you can plant the plants in the ground earlier. Plants are spaced approximately 70 cm by 40 cm or 60 cm by 30 cm. The first treatment is usually carried out no earlier than fourteen days after planting. Subsequent care consists of proper and regular watering (not frequent, but deep), weed removal, and fertilizing.
Characteristics and description of the variety
The leaves of this variety are very similar to potato leaves. The fruits are smooth and small, weighing between 70 and 100 grams. The color is bright red. These tomatoes live up to their name, resembling paradise apples. Although the skin of these tomatoes is thin, they do not crack easily and are easy to transport and store. Given these factors, this variety is ideal for canning and for use in fresh salads.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
Literature suggests that this variety has no drawbacks, only advantages. Some shortcomings are only noted in reviews on gardening forums. However, these may be due to non-compliance or improper adherence to basic cultivation practices. Therefore, the main advantages of the Yablonka Rossii variety are listed below.
The advantages of the Yablonka Rossii variety are:
- productivity;
- versatility;
- tolerate changes in weather conditions well;
- high resistance to diseases;
- transportability and shelf life.

We've been planting this variety for several years now. We love them. The tomatoes are delicious and beautiful. We use them mainly for canning. But I'd like to point out that they really like watering. So, we had to ask our neighbors to water our plants during the week.

I don't know, I read a lot of positive reviews and decided to sow Yablochka seeds myself. I've been trying for two years, but the germination rate is low. The yield is also lower than stated. Maybe I did something wrong?

It's a good variety, but nothing special. The tomatoes are attractive and small, and fit well in jars, which is why we love canning them. The flesh is tasty and goes well in salads. The bushes produced fruit for a long time, not 4 kg per bush, of course, but it was enough for us.
