They are grown in the southern regions, the Moscow region, and central Russia. The "Yellow Giant" tomato is a member of the beef tomato family. Its brightly colored fruits contain a lot of carotene and other micronutrients. Yellow tomatoes are safe for people prone to allergies. Description and characteristics of the variety
The plant is medium-sized, reaching 140–150 cm in height. The "Yellow Giant" variety is intended for outdoor cultivation. Ripening occurs 100–105 days after germination. The fruits are large, weighing up to 700 g, yellow, multi-chambered, and ribbed. I harvest 10–11 kg of tomatoes from a single plant. The flesh is sweet, aromatic, and low in acidity. The fruits of this variety are used for juices, tomato paste, salads, and various culinary dishes.
Features of cultivation
In late March or early April, the seeds are planted for seedlings at a depth of 1–1.5 cm. When the tomatoes have 2–3 true leaves, they are transplanted into larger containers. Water the plants as the top layer of soil dries. Nitrogen-containing fertilizers can be used. To ensure proper adaptation to weather conditions, harden off the tomato seedlings a week before transplanting.
Plants are planted indoors at the end of April and outdoors in late May. Tomatoes are spaced 40 cm apart, leaving 60 cm in rows. Fertilize the plants several times throughout the season with complex mineral fertilizers. Tomato bushes must be tied up. Side shoots are removed promptly to ensure adequate nutrition. The "Yellow Giant" variety is harvested from early July through August.
Possible pests of the variety
Spider mite. The insect is difficult to spot on plantings; its presence can be revealed by a fine web. The mites feed on plant sap. Affected leaves dry out and fall off. A folk remedy is an infusion made from garlic, dandelion leaves, and liquid soap. Plantings can also be treated with "Karbofos."
Wireworm. Click beetle larvae, or wireworms, cause significant damage to various crops. Wireworms damage the root system of tomatoes and can penetrate the fruit. A few days before planting, apply Bazudin to the soil; its effect lasts up to six weeks.
Cutworm caterpillars. Gray caterpillars feed on plant leaves and fruits. Pheromone traps are used against butterflies. The product "Fitoverm" is effective against caterpillars.
WhiteflyThis white insect resembles a fly or moth. It hides on the underside of leaves. The whitefly secretes a sugary substance, which soon develops into sooty mold. Gradually, the leaves change color, become deformed, and fall off. Use Kinmix, Actellic, and Aktara against this insect.
Reviews
Nikolay, 60 years old:
"I grew the 'Yellow Giant' variety in a greenhouse. The plant is tall and vigorous, so I tied it to stakes. The tomatoes are large, tasty, and yellow. This year we'll be growing them from our own seeds. We made juices and sauces from the fruits, and ate them fresh."
Raisa, 45 years old:
"An excellent, productive variety. I really liked the large, sweet fruits. The plants were disease-free while growing, but we couldn't avoid spider mites. I had to apply them twice, 10 days apart. I plan to plant this variety again this year."
Natalia, 30 years old:
"I planted the seeds on March 20th, and the seedlings appeared about seven days later. I transplanted the plants into open ground in early June. I immediately covered the beds with agrospan to help the seedlings adapt to the garden conditions faster. I watered the tomatoes every two weeks with an herbal infusion. I got a good harvest, and I liked the variety."
Pavel, 54 years old:
"Last year, I decided to plant 'Yellow Giant' tomatoes for the first time. Almost all the seeds sprouted, so I had to share them with friends. I kept the seedlings at home for two months, then transplanted them to the greenhouse. It's a tall variety, so I provided support and tied the tomatoes up. The tomatoes grew large, bright yellow, and deliciously sweet."
