The idea that proper planting of tomatoes in the ground or greenhouse, as well as preliminary soil preparation and fertilization, is the only guarantee of a bountiful harvest is a misconception. While all of these things should certainly be taken into account and followed, it's also important to remember to care for the plant and the seedlings, including fertilizing.

The first time to fertilize tomatoes after planting outdoors is three weeks after planting. Use a tablespoon of nitrophoska, diluted in a bucket of water.

For young tomatoes, you'll need half a liter of solution per plant, while for mature tomatoes, the dosage is 2 liters.

Traditional methods

Folk remedies are another good way to feed tomatoes after planting them in the ground. After all, our ancestors managed without the help of special means, and their harvest was enviable.

To prepare tomato fertilizer according to one folk recipe, you'll need 500 grams of cow or horse manure, diluted in ten liters of water. The fertilizer should be left to steep for a week. Therefore, it's best to prepare the fertilizer on the same day the tomatoes are planted to give them time to establish themselves. After seven days, fill a half-liter jar with the steeped fertilizer and dilute it in half a liter of water. Water each plant at the roots with this fertilizer.

You can also use this recipe to feed tomatoes after planting them outdoors: pour boiling water over one part of the grass clippings used for mulching in a liter bucket and let it sit for 7 days. Then, dilute the fertilizer again with water, after which it's ready for use.

Tomatoes that are developing poorly can also be mulched with potato peelings, bastila, or cabbage stalks. Simply place these scraps under the plant's roots; as they decompose, they release carbon dioxide, which helps the weak tomatoes strengthen.

You can choose any means to fertilize with tomatoes after planting in the ground, depending on the availability of certain components. But this procedure must be strictly followed, otherwise there will be no good and healthy harvest, and in the worst case, the tomatoes may simply die.
