Leeks are one of the most popular vegetable crops among gardeners. Knowing when and how to plant leeks for seedlings in 2020 according to the lunar calendar, and taking into account favorable days for sowing seeds or planting bulbs, allows you to reap several harvests during the spring and summer season. To ensure successful growth, it's important to consider the specific characteristics of individual regions, choose the right soil, and prepare the planting material.
When to plant leeks according to the lunar calendar
Plant growth and development depend on the phases of the moon. By following the lunar calendar, you can calculate the most favorable days for planting leeks and determine when not to plant.
Table of favorable days for onions
| Month | February | March | April | May | June |
| When can you plant? | 10-22 | 10-23 | 9-22 | 8-21 | 6-20 |
Leeks are recommended to be planted between the full moon and the new moon (the time when Earth's moon is no longer visible). Seeds sown during this period germinate and root well, absorbing nutrients more readily.
Leeks can be sown for seedlings before winter. Good days for this work are:
- 1-3, 6-8, 15-18, 24, 25 November;
- 3-12, 13-15, 21-23 December.
When you can't plant
The 2020 lunar calendar includes days when any work related to sowing (planting), picking, and transplanting seedlings and saplings into open ground is prohibited. These days coincide with the new moon and full moon. During these periods, plants are dormant, and any human intervention in the plant world is harmful.
Table of unfavorable days
| Month | February | March | April | May | June |
| When you can't plant | 9, 23 | 9, 24 | 8, 23 | 7, 22 | 5, 21 |
On days of the full or new moon it is not recommended:
- plant and sow seeds of plants;
- transplant and pick seedlings and saplings;
- water and fertilize.
Planting onions during magnetic storms—from June 1st to 3rd—is not recommended. Dates with solar and lunar eclipses—May 22nd and June 21st—are also unsuitable. February 21st and 22nd, March 19th and 21st, April 15th and 17th, May 13th and 14th, and June 4th, 6th, 9th and 11th, 20th, and 22nd—are also unsuitable.
How planting dates vary by region
To plant onions from seeds, you need to consider the climate of your specific region. In the southern regions of the country, planting begins later, while in the northern regions, it begins earlier. The greens take 180 days (4 months) to grow.
The timing of planting greens depends on the region
| Region | Favorable days |
| Moscow Oblast, Moscow Region | 27.02, 6.03, 26.03 (early ripening varieties), 26.02, 4.03 (mid-season), 5.03 (late) |
| Leningrad Oblast | 26.03 (early), 9-14.04 (mid-season), 9-11.04 (late) |
| Ural | 13-14.04 (early), 9-10.04 (mid-season), 11-12.04 (late) |
| Siberia | 26-27.02 (early), 4-6.03 (mid-season), 26.03 (late) |
| Rostov Oblast | 8,9,10.05 (early), 11-12.05 (mid-season), 10-12.04 (late) |
| Crimea, Krasnodar | from 9 to 14 (early), 8.05 (mid-season), 10.05 (late) |
When planting leeks, consider not only the most favorable days but also the time of day. In central Russia (Moscow and Leningrad Oblast), where the climate is moderate, the best time to plant leeks is between 12 noon and 3 p.m., while in the southern regions, it's best to plant between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
Growing tips
One of the key factors for growing a good leek harvest is preparing the planting material, choosing the right container and soil, and following all sowing guidelines. Subsequent care is also crucial for the greens.
Selection and preparation of seeds
To ensure seeds germinate and begin growing quickly, select the largest and healthiest specimens. It's important to properly prepare the selected planting material before planting. To do this:
- It is recommended to place seeds collected at home in a cloth bag and soak them in a solution of potassium permanganate (1%) for 30 minutes, then remove them and rinse them in clean warm water;
- soak the treated seeds in water for 36 hours until they swell;
- let the seeds dry.

You can speed up the seed germination process. Adding growth stimulants like Epin or Kornevin to the soaking water can help. These products stimulate root formation and promote better plant establishment.
Containers and soil for onions
For leeks, use plastic containers at least 6 cm deep, or cardboard milk or yogurt cartons. Poke holes in the bottom to allow excess moisture to drain out rather than stagnate in the soil.
Leeks thrive in nutritious soil. To prepare the soil, mix peat, turf, and humus (in a 1:2:1 ratio). It's helpful to add wood ash to the resulting mixture (500 ml per 10 liters of mixture). To disinfect the soil, steam it in a sterilizer (at home, you can use a container of water and a saucepan).
Sowing rules
Sow leek seeds according to the following diagram:
- Fill the planting containers with soil 3/4 full; compact the soil, make furrows (1 cm deep); the distance between rows in a large container is 4 cm;
- Sow the seeds in rows (at a distance of 3 cm from each other), sprinkle with a layer of soil;
- water the plantings generously;
- cover the container with plastic film or glass.
Place the container with the sown seeds in a dark, warm place (optimum temperature is 23-25°C). After 9-10 days, the first shoots will appear. Then, place the plants on a windowsill and remove the covering.
Caring for seedlings
Seedlings need to be properly cared for. To do this:
- young plants are placed on the window and provided with additional lighting in winter;
- create an optimal temperature regime (18-20 °C during the day, 12-14 °C at night);
- water the onions daily, preventing the top layer of soil from drying out;
- The plantings are fed with a solution of 40 g superphosphate; 20 g of ammonium nitrate and potassium chloride (all ingredients are dissolved in 10 liters of water);
- after a month, the seedlings are transplanted into separate containers (at least 4 cm in diameter) and fed with a solution of mullein or mineral compounds;
- 2 weeks before planting the seedlings in open ground, they are hardened off (taken outside every day and left for 2 hours).
Onions are planted in open ground or a greenhouse 50-80 days after germination. Until then, it's recommended to trim the tops periodically (when they reach a height of over 15 cm).

What not to do
The main problems with growing leeks arise from failure to follow planting guidelines and improper seedling care. To ensure a bountiful harvest of this healthy garden crop, avoid:
- ignore the timing of sowing seeds;
- violate planting technology;
- applying fertilizers at the wrong time;
- watering the onions too much;
- allow the soil to dry out;
- do not observe temperature and light conditions.
Leek seedlings grow well both indoors on a windowsill and in open ground after planting. With proper care and suitable growing conditions, and by following the 2020 lunar calendar, you can harvest several healthy vegetables throughout the season.
