Why Chinese cabbage doesn't form a head: the main reasons

Cabbage

Chinese cabbage is a vegetable with tender, juicy leaves that are packed with nutrients. It contains vitamins B, K, A, E, and PP, as well as over 16 amino acids. It helps remove toxins and cholesterol from the body. With the right planting and growing conditions, it can be harvested twice. Sometimes, cabbage does not form a head, but produces shoots. This problem has several causes.

Why isn't the head of cabbage forming?

For a good harvest, it's important to properly plant the crop. The plant thrives in warm conditions, so early planting is contraindicated. Sowing depth is also important; it should be no more than 3 cm. When cultivating the soil, remember that the root system is close to the surface, which can cause damage.

The vegetable requires adequate moisture. A lack of moisture can cause the cabbage to bolt instead of form a head. Micronutrient deficiencies in the soil can also contribute to this problem. Excessive daylight hours can interfere with successful cabbage formation. Many varieties of Chinese cabbage are prone to bolting. The following are the most resistant to this process:

  • Bilko;
  • Manokolo;
  • Taranco.

How to avoid the problem

Planting cabbage in the ground Ideally, water twice a season: in late April and early August. The planting location should be shaded. You can also reduce daylight hours by covering the plants with shade cloth in the afternoon. Watering should be moist, but not excessive.

Important!
When the ambient temperature drops below 22 degrees Celsius, the crop should be covered. Agrofibre is suitable for this purpose.

A balance of micronutrients is essential for successful head formation. Chinese cabbage requires potassium, calcium, and phosphorus most. Fertilizing is necessary not only during the ripening period but also before planting. Potassium sulfate can be used. 20 grams of fertilizer per square meter of soil is sufficient.

These recommendations are valid until Chinese cabbage sprouts and are intended as preventative measures. Proper care is essential for a good harvest.
