Reasons why garlic may turn yellow

There may be several reasons, and before you begin treating your garden pets, you need to determine the cause.

1. Diseases - this includes the garlic-loving onion fly, various fungi, microbes that affect bulbs, such as nematodes, rot, and fusarium.
2. Spring frosts can damage garlic.
3. Nutrient deficiencies can also cause garlic to turn yellow.

To determine the cause of the yellowing, simply dig up the garlic cloves and inspect them. If you see rotted or moldy areas, the cause is disease, and you need to buy special treatments. To prevent this, it's best to carefully treat the garlic cloves with a product like "Maxim" before planting, or soak them in a weak solution of potassium permanganate. Even the remaining solution should be thoroughly watered in the garden beds. Potassium sulfate and a solution of table salt have also proven effective in combating these garlic diseases.

  • If there are no visible reasons, the garlic could very well have frozen; a growth stimulant like Epin can help.
If there are not enough nutrients, you need to feed the garlic by watering it with solutions of mineral substances, adding ash and potassium sulfate.
  • If the minerals are in granules, make furrows between the rows, sprinkle the granules there, cover with soil and water.
  • The best way to use potassium sulfate is to add a teaspoon of fertilizer to a liter of water and spray it on the garlic in the evening.
  • Mown grass, infused and diluted with ash, works well. You can and should also feed garlic with chicken manure.

Disease prevention

garlic diseases

To prevent any problems with your plants, it is best to take the right approach to preparation before planting.

  1. Since garlic prefers neutral soil, add ash to the soil before planting to reduce acidity.
  2. If there is a lack of nitrogen, urea can be added to the soil.
  3. To prevent winter garlic from freezing, plant according to your region's weather conditions, from September (in northern latitudes) to November (in southern regions). This will prevent the sprouts from sprouting and will overwinter well.
  4. To prevent onion flies from feasting on your garlic, plant carrots nearby and sprinkle the sprouts with ash mixed with tobacco dust.
  5. An ice shower will also be useful against pests.
  6. Ammonia helps against yellowing - add just 5 spoons to a ten-liter bucket of water and spray the plantings.

Water properly; lack of moisture can also result in yellowing garlic. Loosening the soil around the bulbs will also help, allowing more oxygen to reach them and keeping them healthy.
